Fargoth's Ring Quest Causing Crashes?

Submitted by corwin78 on

Hello, all.

I installed Skywind today & am completely blown away by how much of Morrowind has been converted so far. If I had any skills to offer I'd gladly contribute to the group effort. As it is, I doubt if familiarity with the MW Construction Set would be useful.

Given that quests are still a long way off, I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a way of aborting/disabling the Fargoth's Ring Quest that appears to be causing crashes in my install. My latest Papyrus log bloated up to 960K, and about 955K consisted of:

error: Cannot call GetRef() on a None object, aborting function call
stack:
[fbmwMSFargothRing (0900FA1F)].fbmwMSFargothRingQuest.OnUpdate() - "fbmwMSFargothRingQuest.psc" Line ?
[08/17/2013 - 09:12:00PM]

My char. was strolling through Vivec at the time, so it seems the Fargoth thing is persistent.

Anyone else having a problem with this? And if so, does anyone know of a solution?

Cheers!

Hmm... I've never had any problems, at what point does it crash?

Since posting the above, it happened again in the Vivec Foreign Quarter Canalworks. I'm inclined to doubt the "last log entry caused the CTD" dogma, but it seems odd that this particular quest is spamming my Papyrus log. I resumed from the previous autosave, which was in the Vivec Hlaalu Canton exterior & nowhere near Seyda Neen.

I'm still sipping & sampling Skywind so I haven't yet BOSSed, BASHed, or TES5EDITed any of the .esm or .esp files. I wonder if cleaning the mods & revising the load order would make a difference...

No I have vanilla Skywind (other than my intro) and I haven never CTD what so ever

Yep, this error is spamming through the log both when I start a new game in Morrowind and when I use cow wrldmorrowind command. I'm not a scripter, but afaik it's the most common papyrus ctd issue in Skyrim.

The trick is it will only ctd when you'll get some critical amounth of such OnUpdate scripts spamming the log, so it'll only happen on a heavily modded game. That's why many people testing their mods on vanilla Sky miss that thing. Then these OnUpdate scripts get into the save and not disappear even after uninstalling the mod, permanently breaking the save, which will then ctd randomly time to time and/or bloat.

The solution is to use OnUpdateOnce when possible. Also the latest SKSE is attempting to clean such scripts from saves (only the ones from uninstalled mods):

For me it worked in 3-4 such cases and not worked at least once.

<EDIT> Dang my post sounds kinda lecturing >< I'm sorry. My English is not good enough so I just throw in all the info without noticing how it sounds altogether. Keep up the good work.

I think I saw this earlier, I'll have to revisit this quest. Thanks for bringing to attention.

I'm running 60+ mods and haven't started a fresh game to play around in Skywind, so that may be asking for trouble. As a temporary workaround, keeping the sessions fairly short seems to help a lot.

To anyone who's been plagued by CTDs, as I was, I can't praise Boris Vorontsov's "CTD and Memory patch ENBoost" highly enough. The guy is a miracle worker. Here's the link:

Cheers!

UPDATE: I identified the Fargoth's Ring Quest and used the console to complete it, but that didn't stop it spamming my Papyrus log. SKSE's ClearInvalidRegistrations function didn't help either. I've had that enabled since I started getting random crashes. Only the ENBoost I mentioned in a previous post seems to have done any good.

However, I did find one cure: starting a new game from scratch (in Morrowind) & going through the Seyda Neen CharGen routine, then giving Fargoth his damned precious ring. After a couple of saves & exits, my Papyrus log is back down in the 10-20Kb range.

Another possible source of Papyrus bloat is Skyrim's moronic (imo) Achievements Quest. I'm guessing there's nothing in Morrowind to trigger Achievements so the script keeps on looking & spamming. This dandy little mod:

put an end to that nonsense.

I still haven't the time to look at this yet. I think I remember there is a registerforupdate call in here that I can replace by something better (remember we're learning as we go :P).

I'm not using AddAchievement().

I didn't think asking people to get my ring would cause so much trouble...

I rewrote the quest recently. It will no longer be an issue.
