Morrowind for the Next Generation

Submitted by grumpycat on

I get a bit sick of reading ignorant, stupid, hating, generally trolling comments about these remakes. Not on this website, but on other gaming forums.

It divides people. There are those that are Morrowind players, with 100s of hours of game time with TES3. For a lot of them its you cant beat the original, so why try? I'm fine with that, that is why for all those players who hate the simplified format of play I say stick with what you already know and have.

However they fail to see how not only has technology advanced, but so has the number of players. Morrowind has sold a bit over 4 million units in its 10 year history. Skyrim sold 3.5 million on the first day. Its not because it was a better game, it just shows you how much the popularity of gaming has evolved. Queue Skywind. A real chance to bring what many consider to be the best of the series to this very huge pool of people. That is what it is about, giving a new generation of Elder Scroll gamers a chance to discover wonderful content. Now I was one of those players who enjoyed Skyrim so much that I decided to give Morrowind a go. It fell short when it came to many elements, its a simply truth for those used to more modern formats.

What I am getting at is that this is not being made for Morrowind fans. Don't get me wrong, I know there are old school players who are looking forward to it, but in general Morrowind players will actually make up a small number of our gamers.

This is more for the tens of millions of new Elder Scrolls fans, yet to discover the alien land of Vvardenfell in a way that makes it accessible for the newer generation of gamers.

here here! Many of those comments I just don't understand myself. If you  don't think this version will "do the classic game justice" then just ignore it and keep playing the original morrowind.

I loved morrowind and did put hundreds of hours into it. What im looking forward to in skywind is to experience that all again in a different, high res, way. If you don't want it, just go away.

I agree wholeheartedly! I am a long-time Elder Scrolls fan, and Morroiwnd is, to date, my favorite game of all time. I love it so much, in fact, that I want the world to love it as much as I do! When I first learned of this project, I immediately jumped on to help ensure that every bit of this Vvardenfell is filled to the brim with Morrowind-y goodness. I salute those few (myself included) that still pour hundreds of hours into the original to this day.

But for those of us that seem to think that Morrowind fandom should be some sort of silly elitist club for only those with the cajones to play the original game, clunky (by today's standards) mechanics and all, I can only plead that you open your eyes! Morroiwnd was not super potions and dice rolls, Morrowind was (and still is) the beautifully alien island of Vvardenfell and its history. Morroiwnd was a compelling narrative about betrayal, lies, falls from grace, and a society on the brink due to millennia of stagnation.

Finally... Well that clears it up!

Well what most Hardcore TES3 diehards think is that we are in fact trying o make a better Morrowind... that's not entirely true. As Happy said, its more that yes... Morrowind was a great game for the gamers of it's initial generation... so we are just trying to make it more accessible to the gamers of the Modern Generation.

I personally think Morrowind (with the right mods) Looks and feels like a great, 'great' game. But Skywind to me is definitely preferred. The Engine is far more smoothe, combat is more fluid and compelling and personally...Fully voiced NPC Dialogue makes the world feel more immerssive.

I can understand why people suggest playing the original Morrowind and use the necessary mod overhauls to get it as best as possible. Absolutely. But this usually comes from players who have learned to love the old system, and recommending that a new player also love it.

The reality is that its much harder to get into than you would imagine. Some will, a lot won't. Also getting the right overhauls is in itself something you have to be in the know about.

Skywind in my opinion makes Morrowind accessible for the general populous of Skyrim players. Sorry die-hard fanatics, you just cant get all Star Trek Next Generation viewers to agree that original Star Trek was better. Its in the eye-of-the-beholder.

Speaking of things that bother people, why do people have such a hard time wrapping there minds around the fact that skywind does not take place at the same time as skyrim? "but vvardenfell was destroyed by red mountain exploding! how can all this exist! lorebreaking!" shut up! why can't you understand this is porting morrowind the game and everything that implies into the skyrim engine? thats it! where not rebuilding tamriel in the modern ((as far as tes is concerned)) era. whats so hard to get about that?

When I don't like something or have no specific interest in it, I usually just not talk about it. It's just not for me, why talking trash about it, to everyone its own....

It seems the rule on the internet is to bash on everything that's not exactly compliant with your tastes. I have no interest in collecting stamps but I will certainly not hate people who do, nor waste time to comment on youtube videos.

Anyway, Skywind is a remake with new tools, new engine, etc... with a 201x flavor and just like movies remake, the original is still here for people to compare and play if they want, and I have no problem with someone telling me they'd rather play the original.

I guess the comments that hurt me most are the ones like "it will never be completed" or, you can sometime feel the bitterness or just the hate... This, I don't understand (except for the morroblivion fabled initial days story with Bethesda) because we're pretty open to anyone who asks questions or wants to join - though, to be fair sometimes some of us are not very nice for newbies questions. This project is a hobby for most of us, it's non-commercial and when we complete it, it will provide a lot of free gameplay hours to people - so it's a win-win situation, right?

[Also remember the rule: only the people that hates post comments. People who like most often do it silently :P ]

Well on the plus side there is a lot more love out there, I think people are warming to the idea, and there are millions of Elder Scrolls players who have no idea these projects exist still.  I think the initial haters are from people who have been promised big game mods that never eventuate. That is why you get the "it will never be completed" statements.

Plus you always get, the "its got or going to have a cease and desists order", so don't bother following its progress.

The other one I'm seeing now, it that will be just Skyrim with different environments. Are you f*cking kidding me!? Apparently you don't play games for the general story and quests anymore.

I understand general hating, Elder Scroll Online brings out the worst in me, and I haven't played it. I think I'll stop the bitter comments and actually wait for its release before giving opinion, because the fact is I don't know what it will be like.

Was under the impression we where making Morroblivion, Skywind and Skyblivion just to have something to do with our own time, you know be creative, having fun and such. Don’t think we do all this effort for others to play it at the end. Hope this did not sound to hard.

NOTE: I can’t even run Skyrim on my PC, never played it, but I do participate in creating these insane projects.

What I'm missing in this discussion so far is to differentiate between more technological updates in Skywind (new engine: higher resolution, better lighting, more polygons, better animations... thus overall more realisitic looking environment) and gameplay changes introduced from Oblivion on.

I'm personally just looking forward to the tech. updates, I wanna see Morrowind in a more beautiful version, my eyes are just to spoiled by now. (At some point in the future a Oculus Rift mod would be the ultimate thing to wait for).

What I don't really wanna see are those simplified gameplay elements like the new magic system. Despite Skyrim being a great game, the magic system was boring as hell! Apparently Beth thought that they have to take out the complex and more complicated spell creating system when promoting the game to just not core but also even more to casual gamers.

Regarding the gameplay, we will actually use Skyrim systems (stats, perks, magic, etc...). We want to provide the morrowind settings, story and feeling but changing the gameplay is a large endeavor.

However and that's the magic of mods, there are a few mods on nexus that work in that direction and therefore, you are free to use them.

Also any dedicated modder can create an optional plugin tailored for skywind in that regard.

Ignore the haters.  Haters gonna hate.

Hahaha, well said!

One of the reasons I love the idea of a Skywind, is that combat in Morrowind was unbearable (and sub-par in Oblivion). I also love the quest marker system (and the ability to turn it off). So I like new features like that as well as the new engine, but  I do miss some of the old complexities and intricacies (Morrowind Magic, no hand holding quests, a world that doesn't care about you, etc).
I just figure that if people are working hard to bring Morrowind up to date and they're not doing it the way I like it, it's my responsibility to do it better myself, or not complain about it....

I signed up just to say thank you!  I am a huge fan of Skyrim and never knew about the elder scrolls world before. After 300 hours of playing Skyrim I went to find my next Elder Scroll game.  The general opinion was TES3 was the best Elder Scroll game so I went to go buy it and check it out on Youtube and the graphics unfortunately really turned me off plus some of the negatives(hit detection I guess?) :(.  I know story > graphics should be my mindset but as you said I'm too used to the newer graphics of modern day gaming.  So I decided to see if there was a mod to make TES3 look and feel like Skyrim and I found you guys!

Thanks to you guys I can play TES3 in the future and I've pre-bought TES3 and patiently waiting for you guys to finish this mod!  I wish I could help but I'm not that useful when its related to computer programming and design lol.

My main point in posting is to hopefully give you guys more encouragement to push forward knowing there are people you mentioned in your post that are looking forward to try Morrowind :)

So on gamespot the Elder Scroll was voted the number one game series of the decade.

Morrowind is arguably the best of the series and we are bringing it into 2014.

Does that mean that Skywind is going to be the quintessential game of 2014? Why yes, yes it does!

Am I the only one to think that Skywind is just a massive expansion pack to Skyrim and treat it like all the quest mods out there?

I mean, this (assuming that Tribunal and Bloodmoon would be done too) would add thousands of hours of gameplay and I will be able to use my existing Skyrim character for it :D

I still play the original because of Tamriel Rebuilt, Morrowind Rebirth, the other province mods and my existing mods.

Morroblivion - well...I always found that with Oblivion crashing on me once every 20 minutes, I never really truly enjoyed Morroblivion. Oblivion's engine can corrupt your saves quite easily and is struggling with the ton of mods I throw at it. Morrowind's engine is very stable, even with MGE XE and Skyrim's engine is stable too.

Those quest mods do take place in Skyrim but I wouldn't doubt that a quest mod can take place on another island and only on that island. It is still a large quest mod though.
