Freeze on entering Sterdecan's farmhouse?

Submitted by Mike P on

I've finally got my install to the point where it's relatively stable (I still get a 0xc00000fd exception crash every hour or two that I can't resolve, but the more frequent 0xc0000005 crashes seem to be mostly fixed). However, whenever I try to enter Sterdecan's farmhouse north of Pelagiad, the loading screen bar goes almost to full, but the game then freezes. It doesn't CTD, and there's no error in the Windows event log. Also, although I've only yet been to a few towns (Balmora, Vivec, Pelagiad, Seyda Neen), I can enter buildings in those areas - at least the many I've tested so far - without any problem. So has anyone had this error with Sterdecan's house specifically, and/or have any ideas? Thanks!

Background info/my specs:
I'm running under 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium on an Intel i7 930 at 2.8 GHz with 6 GB of RAM and a Geforce GTX 480, and have already performed the following fixes on top of the standard Morroblivion v0.59 install. I also don't plan on using the Crash Prevention System, as there's too much evidence it can potentially corrupt saves.

1) 4GB LAA patch
2) Oblivion Stutter Remover v4.1.24RC (mostly default ini settings, but with iThreadsFixedToCPUs = 2, iDefaultMode = 3, iDefaultSpin = 3000, and iHeapAlgorithm = 2, which seems to be more stable than ThreadHeap3 for me)
3) Streamline v3.1 (for Streamsave and Streampurge only)
4) Fast Exit v2
5) Oblivion.ini tweaks (uInterior Cell Buffer = 16, uExterior Cell Buffer = 102, iPreloadSizeLimit = 104857600 - from http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_9.html)
6) All autosaves turned off except for autosave on wait
7) TES4LodGen (ran after latest mod load order was set in BOSS/Wrye Bash)

My mod loadout is pretty light:

I can enter this cell just fine, so it's something on your end.

You can try changing Heap Algorithm in OSR.

I've never used Streamline, so can't advice here.

Oblivion.ini "tweaks" commonly found on the web are mostly placebo, and sometimes can even cause bugs. Known safe ini edits are described here.

Do you really need autosave on wait? Autosaves (all kinds) are kinda buggy in Oblivion.

Try to regenerate the oblivion.ini.

Try to use the default setting in iDefaultMode and iDefaultSpin

Don't use iThreadsFixedToCPUs(its experimental and don't work well)

Streamline can crash the Pc sometimes, expecially when it save the game during a combat(Lost a savegame doing this)

Thanks for the ideas, all! Unfortunately, these changes didn't fix the problem in my current save games (i.e. disabling DistantLOD, resetting oblivion.ini and then applying only a handful of "safe" fixes, turning off all autosaves - although I agree I might as well leave them all turned off anyway, especially now that I'm using Streamsave - and resetting/tweaking each OSR ini setting one by one). I also rested four days in another cell and tried again with these "fixed" settings, but still no luck.

However, I tested the cell in a new game with my exact same ini etc. settings, and I could enter without any problems. I'm just debating whether I want to start a whole new game now that I'm 30 hours in... considering how unreliable the Oblivion engine is (especially modded), and that there's no guarantee a new game wouldn't just develop other equally or even more serious problems later on itself, I think I'll just take the risk and continue with my current game.

I'll post more if I end up finding a solution, though - thanks again for the help!

You must have the worst luck with Oblivion it seems...Maybe just try playing some more and after a few hours try to go back to the cell, sometimes Oblivion sorts itself out like that. For me the game used to crash at a certain part in the wilderness all the time but after a few hours or ingame days of playing I could enter the region just fine. Just do a couple of quests and come back later.

Yeah, Brainslasher, I was looking through all my posts over just the last few days, and I've definitely had a lot of bad luck - though being pretty clueless about (or at least out of practice with) general Oblivion modding tricks hasn't helped. ;) Thanks as always for the idea, though; I'll just give it some more time and try again later.
