[suggestion] Change journal UI

Submitted by hangman04 on

The Journal UI in Skyrim is pretty lousy and non immersive compared to the old Morrowind one. Although we can say it is functional and easy to manipulate, i think it would be great if someone could change the UI to be similar to Morrowind.

Basically, the instead of the general objectives, we would have old fashion journal entries from original content.

This change would require 2 components: changes in graphics ( like a papyrus / book pages look and opening / closing animation similar to books ), and a scripting component so that each entry / objective receives the in game date as a form of header, also all on default we would have all objectives in a chronological order and not grouped under its respective quest, basically similar to how the Journal looked in Morrowind ( with Skyrim extended functionality of course).

What do you think ? Would it be worth it ? And do we have in the development team someone who could work on this ?

I don't know if I want the full morrowind experience but it's true that with the Skyrim journal you don't get a full log of the quest, only the latest.

There are two solutions to this:

-updating each log to make it more complete with regards to what happened before in the quest. The issue is when you have multiple possible paths in quest

-modifying the UI. No idea if that's possible at all.

I don't understand what the problem is. I wish people would stop wanting the "Morrowind experience", if that was the point of this project, it would be a waste of time to continue because everybody could just play Morrowind with MGSO.

It's not about that. Imo journal in Skyrim suck by default :)), and since we want to recreate Morrowind, using its journal system as inspiration is welcomed.

I for one think that its a great idea and I totally agree that Skyrims ''journal''if you can even call it that sucks and morrowind's journal was awesome!!! (and still is)

but as digital said it may not be possible :/

Wait, wasn't the journal like one of the biggest complaints about Morrowind when it first came out? If I recall, it was so bad that they actually tweaked it a bit in the Tribunal expansion pack.

I haven't played Morrowind in a quite a while, but when I first played it, I remember getting annoyed about the journal.

My only real issue with the journal is the lack of entries showing up. There are moments where multiple journal entries can occur in a single conversation, and then you only see the latest journal entry with no context to the previous entries.

Finding a way to show more than a single entry would be best. I think trying to change the entries to tell more of the previous parts would be time consuming and potentially messy. I also think that changing that UI should definitely be possible based on other things I have seen done, but I'm not certain how to go about such a thing.

The problem was you couldn't find quests, just random scrambled journal entries, which they fixed somehow in Tribunal, i think, but we don't have such a problem since Skyrim Journal has already another system that might prevent this. Furthermore a change in UI that may give the feeling you are actually reading a journal (while being able to find quests in a Table of Contents or smth similar ) may be worth the trouble.
