Question about conversations

Submitted by Aero2408 on

Hi guys, just asking a question about Skywind...

When the project is finished, will the npcs have fluid conversations like Skyrim in which the player actually talks, or will it have a list of different topics like Morrowind?

Also, are the line of each NPCs copied from Morrowind or is it made less generic? (Because as you know a lot of the responses were copy-pasted and NPCs didn't have much personality)

They will retain the morrowind dialogue mainly.

Except quest dialogue, we will possibly limit the who gets to say what.

The list of topic available will be replaced with full sentences. It will help with easing the flow of dialogue.

e.g. "weather" -> "What's the weather today?"

Thanks a lot for answering, liked the part of "full sentences" a lot

Ambient conversations would be a really cool thing to think about regardless. It would add a great immersion factor to Skywind.

Maybe a few people could write up random conversations we could hear depending on the location/city.

I'm a long time quiet lurker on the forums, looking for something I could help with in my breaks etc. I've modded a lot back in the Morrowind days, but have sinced focused on my career in the film business. Today I work as a professional scriptwriter, but would love to contribute with written dialogue if you would like me to. Of course written to your specifications.

If not, no harm. I know most people in games don't consider writing a real skill. I'm properly just gonna write a quest-mod after Skywind is finished anyway :)

The only trouble I can foresee with conversations currently is that it will require some coordination with whomever is making the AI packages as well as someone who understands how to incorporate them in-game. Since we're playing off the rule that everyone emulates a certain type of voice given on race and gender, getting the voice-actors together and make it sound immersive in-game shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Your writing skills would be greatly appreciated! I think what will be most important besides your lore knowledge will be to indicate the location, and ensure that you have designated actors (characters) in those places for the conversation to take place.

Yes, indeed. And I would need some clear guidelines to work within. I'm unclear on exactly how the conversation system in Skyrim works behind the scenes (haven't modded since Morrowind), but the lore shouldn't be a problem. I'm quite the Elder Scrolls fan, and would of course double check both the characters and background on the wiki, to make sure the conversations were as accurate as possible. I might even give Morrowind yet another playthrough to get inspired.

English isn't my first language, as you might have noticed, but I have a friend who's both a fantasy geek and an english major. She would no doubt do the spell checking, should I ask.
