Redoran Buildings

Hey, folks!

I've been fiddling with modeling some Redoran buildings, and I was wondering if anyone had any raw .objs of the morrowind models so I could compare sizes? I'm roking on the regular houses right now, so those two models would be the most helpful at this point.

Also, what do ya'll think? Headed in the right direction? I much prefer the simpler shapes of the Morrowind houses to the ones in Dragonborn. The ones in Dragonborn look like actual insect shells, and it's my understanding that, aside from the council chambers in Ald'ruhn, Redoran architecture is only inspired by insects.

I actually rather liked that their buildings looked more insect-like in Dragonborn because it reinforced the idea that their architecture was inspired from the beasts living in the Ashlands and built to withstand the harsh conditions. The additional details also really help from setting it apart from Velothi buildings, which is actually more what I'm feelings from your current models rather than Redoran.

I'm a huge model slut though so I like this regardless :P

Well, obviously the normal map will really help in selling the organic shapes more, and I personally prefer it be less bug and more building, but I see where you're coming from. I can try pushing the swoops a little more.

Unfortunately, if we end up liking these for in-game, someone else is gonna have to detail the high-poly, because my computer is not up to that task, I'm afraid.

Here are the obj format, just keep experimenting, a good start.

Me likey. Are you going to do the UVs as well?

Yeah. I'll be doing as much as I can. The only thing I can't do is the sculpting on the high poly for the normal map. My computer just can't handle all the polygons. :(

But I can do the color map once that's done, if it ever gets done.

you'll probably have to use separate texture for different areas.
Normal maps cant really describe a shape on a mesh that big, as the resolution wont be high enough. So dont worry about the sculpting, we can help with textures.

you'll have to use the mesh to describe the shading.
But we can use LODS and normals for the whole shape later.

I like the look so far, glad to see multi-talented devs who can UV too :)

Got it, Ravanna. So I guess I'll separate the front from the back, and maybe the interior of the doorway.

I assuming I'll be able to mirror the texture to maximize texture reslolution, or do we think the shapes are too broad for that to not be too obvious? I know sometimes it bugs me when I see the rorschach test in the texture.

Also, is there a standard texture resolution we should be shooting for?

Also also, this thing's probably gona need a new door.

the back part would be simply tiled I think, but that front face part we can try baking if you wish. We could bake at 4096, test it, then try 2048.
Normally, mirroring would be bad, but thankfuly we have vertex colouring to use (used for ao and tint), that may be enough to break the rorschach effect

Alright, they've been adjusted for size and shape. They should fit in place of the old models perfectly now. Here's an image of the low poly of the small one and a high poly of the large one. Both low poly models are a little under 5700 tris.

A few more angles of the low poly models to give you an idea of their shapes and proportions to each other. So horseshoe crab. Much Limulidae.

I'll have to continue working on it after the holidays.

Awesome, these really needed to be redone!

The new models look really nice, but those chimneys need some more love. Try to be creative and make new chimneys that match the style of those houses.

Couple of concept arts pictures that i think could be inspiring

Here are better versions of those first concepts:

It'd be great, I think, if we could work in all those details that weren't really expressed in the original game.

Thanks for the extra pics Lady Nerevar. I absolutely agree about the detailing and look. My vote is for exactly the same.

We must do a version of the awning that have the insect legs. Always wanted those!
