Low FPS

Submitted by ChasenCharran on
I guess this isn't a really bad problem, but it's still a problem. My FPS can get to around 60-70 in caves or Dwemer ruins, but when I enter a city it'll go down to 10-20. I'm running an ATI Radeon HD 5450 with 2 gigs of dedicated memory, and a 2.8 ghz Intel Pentium CPU. Any tips on getting it to run better? I think I should have better performance in general.

With that system, I would speculate that the budget-level 5450 is probably the bottleneck there. Here is a review of the card: http://www.techspot.com/review/244-ati-radeon-hd-5450/ Note that the 2nd and 3rd best cards on this graph can be had new for $90 on amazon. [External image]

I'm using a Mac Book Pro 17' 5, 2 with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. I have been using bootcamp to play Morroblivion that I setup over this past summer. In your opinion would I be able to run the newer version of Morroblivion and any future releases of the visual overhaul? - Spadra

ChasenCharran...and a 2.8 ghz Intel Pentium CPU...
The CPU is your problem. I used to have the same CPU as you and my game performance was mediocre. I eventually upgraded to a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 but I didn't notice any improvement. Recently though, I upgraded again to a Pentium D 945 and this time, I noticed a large performance improvement. Basically, if you want better performance, you will need better hardware if possible, especially a new CPU since Oblivion is a CPU-intensive game. On the other hand, you can try running your meshes through PyFFI and see if there is any improvement.
