Research "Morrowind-like atmosphere feeling"

Submitted by DaedricLord on

Um not a team member yet but I've decided to help the project in development so I've made a little research

What creates the feeling of Morrowind besides music and landscapes?

A perfect shading! I want you to notice that next time you look on a Morrowind screenshot.

I've noticed some unleavened feeling in Skywind and Morroblivion, I asked my self - what is the reason? And I've noticed that if you play a bit more with fog/shaders/sky/skyboxes you can create "being on vvardenfell" feeling.

One of the main things in morrowind is pink-orange tinge in the fog even on Solstheim. That is the Morrowind style - you can notice it even in ESO Morrowind territory screenshots

Now lets see what will happen if we take a Skywind screenshot and add a pink-orange tinge to it (check first attachment)

In morrowind the fog is created with vertrexpainted skybox model which moves around with player

I've seen a lot of people do effects that circle around the player in a box/sphere like fashion and it usually ends up destroying immersion rather than helping it due to the fact that there's no way to keep it from clipping into the ground.

And I can tell you from firsthand experience that Morrowind represented in TESO does not have the pinkish distant fog. Just a barely-decent DoF. At least not in the non-ashland parts I've been to so far.

I did not said that you should make a skybox following player, I said this is how its done in old games such as morrowind, you did not caught the idea - does not meter how its done(you can change weather options at least) orange-pink will add more atmospheric fx to environment

What about ESO - I have not played the beta, I only Talk based on what I ve set in concept art and screenshots, but I dont think that ESO meters any longer - i love morrowind in kirkbride's style

try to add skywind screenshots some morrowind-like shading it will look interesting

I agree, DaedricLord - especially when we have this hug plume from volcano - the sky shouldn't be crystal clear around Vvardenfell. It would be great if we could actually add effect similar to what you are talking about.

why not just add in a new set of foggy weather types for skywind that feature that orange/pink hue, since they will need to be made anyway for standalone porpoises?

You are welcomed to try creating your own weather system for Skywind in a separate plugin for now (which can be merged later). I agree that proper weathers have major influence on perception, especially things like fog and tints.

Except for Bitter Coast and Red mountain (and they have some issues too), the weather is almost undeveloped for other regions.

The sun bleached weathers of Skywind have always been a temporary thing until we get our core development done. Vvardenfel is going to be soaked in atmosphere by the time we are done.

Even though there were sunny weathers in Morrowind, with the ash plume being a dominate feature in Skywind, I'm thinking that the best sunny days will still have a haze of ash covering the sky, maybe mixed with red, something like below, but this is a night shot so obviously not this dark.

Btw the skybox is the cloud layer system for Skyrim, so that has a lot to do how weather looks.
