GendunDrup: actually I don't think we'll be able to use your work as is. I didn't realize they were upper resolution of the current vanilla illustrations. Could you put some personal touches to them ?

I mean, as far as I can see these are 1:1 conversion in higher resolution ? This would be too close to morrowind vanilla pics. They should be altered a bit: that's where creative freedom comes in!

The printing press as we

The printing press as we think of it today. Like Gutenburg's. It's called movable type because, unlike printing that existed before-hand (woodblock printing, which was generally used for art, like what Albrecht Dürer often used), movable type has individual letters which can be arranged with the machine to mass-produce full pages of text much faster than either hand-carving each page (backwards) before printing, or writing each page by hand.

Movable type was instrumental in the advancement of Wester culture, so, considering how technologically advanced the Dwemer were, I figure that they may very well have had it. And an old printed look might look cool for the Dwemer text.

I used an alphabetical font to recreate it, but it does not say much.
Even on the WIKI pages they say only a Dwemer would make sense out of this.

Hopefully it’s of use to anyone.

I would love to contribute some illustrations, but unfortunately I don't know how to digitally draw, I'm only good with pencil and paper and I don't know how I'd get that to look the same ink on canvas style the other drawings have.

@Tschib: after digging around

@Tschib: after digging around in Morrowind's book art folder, I am assuming images should be 1024x1024, 1024x512 or any other multiple of four (64, 128, 256 etc). Format will likely be tga, but I'd advise keeping a xcf/psd/other format on back up. For aesthetic purposes some of us have been uploading WIPs and previews with a ye olde paper background but all finals should have transparent background. All art welcome :) All the originals have to be redone from scratch, so tweaked designs are good. The mods decide on what gets used in-game.

Nocturnal is done and rough concepts/sketches for Molag Bal and Azura are done. Boethiah's being a bit of a pain. I have two versions of Nocturnal; the first is sketchy:

The second is very Dunmeri, inspired by the temple shrine artworks:

Which one is preferred?

Second one is, as the name suggests, a bit faded and aged.

WIP of Molag Bal:

All the Daedric Princes in Invocation of Azura are referred to as female, so I will depict Molag Bal and Boethiah as such (not necessarily as feminine, however).

Ellagne - i tried to open it

Ellagne - i tried to open it and actually all i can see is black... It might be this computer's fault so i will check it on my laptop when i get home to be sure whats the problem.

robbinsmoth - i like the general idea but first of all the border seems very... imperial? its fitting oblivion more i would say - and if this is an imperial map, then some pointers would be cool. Well normally maps are named, have some legend and other stuff, right?

Yeah i did get a bit oblivion

Yeah i did get a bit oblivion inspired :)

Not sure if its clear, but its no way at all finished. I made half of it in Illustrator and threw it in photoshop to see if i could do the inky stuff. I kinda think it works.

What would you reckon it should be like? I will definitely add a scale to the edges, forest and mountain bits to the land, as well as maybe make the border less... black. Were the maps supposed to be less or more inperial?

tommythegun: I could have hit

tommythegun: I could have hit a wrong option in the save tga dialogue; I have no idea what settings should be used for the tgas. I downloaded the first one and it opened fine for me in Gimp, but if you can't open it when you get home I can upload a psd.

robbinsmoth: that map looks fantastic; my opinion might not count for much but as far as I'm concerned, go right ahead and do the rest of the maps. The originals have a more Imperial than Dunmer feel IMO, so yours works nicely. I think those guides are aimed at outlanders (like our beloved Nerevarine :P) and could have been organised by the Imperial colonisation effort. Morrowind used the Dali font extensively on loading screens and such, which has a more alien fantasy vibe, while the labels on the maps seem stock-standard western fantasy (aka Imperial).

Nope your input helps heaps! Yeah i figured that these maps would be mass printed and distributed (ie woodcut printing press). Less of a handpainted look and more of a stamped feel.

I also thought it would be cool, if there were a few unique maps that had scribbles on them, notes or markers that would lead to chests in the wilderness, or weapon caches. Or just plain old 'things'. I never picked these up in Morrowind, but if we give people a reason... :)

This. Some kind of block printing is a great idea. I was thinking of some poor sod stuck in the back of some Imperial outpost inking each guide one by one :P

Unique grafittied maps would be awesome. Or a couple of defaced copies of certain books. A map definitely pique my curiosity if I found one. Maybe a map pointing to some hidden-away wonder one of the talented landscapers made that some people might not otherwise find. Smugglers and pirates could carry notes showing their loot caches. With weapon caches the only thing would be balancing a rare find with not hand-holding the player. Maybe some stashes of rare items that aren't weapons/armour or even useful, just things a collector might want to display in their home?

Molag Bal

With Azura I painted myself into a corner by making too many possibilities.

Context is important: we are in Dunmer Land with Dunmer artists painting Dunmeri pictures. People often like to model their deities after themselves. On the other hand, beyond her physical in-game appearances Azura isn't depicted as a Dunmer. Her ears are round on her statue. I checked. So even the Dunmer wouldn't necessarily be depicting her as a mer.

The second issue is her attire. The context is a wizened priestess trying to sell Azura worship, so great pains would be taken over Azura's portrait. Such a priestess might be inclined to portray Azura's matronly wisdom and dignity. On the other hand, as of Morrowind Azura's shrine depicts her in only a skirt.

Thoughts, anyone?

While the Dunmer tend to be
While the Dunmer tend to be less prudish about that sort of thing, it would probably be better to go with the fully clothed because gamers (read, the mothers of relatively young ones ARE). Not to say we should pander to mothers, but Azura has been depicted both ways, so it's not like we're altering her (I would be vehemently against the full robe had she never been depicted that way). I would also day depict her as Dunmer, or perhaps Chimer (Dunmer with Altmer coloration). Head-wise (hehehe, I just realized that's a pun), I like the one currently on her shoulders. Like a stern but loving mother.

This looks sweet man! Weirdly enough, i love the rough style of it :) Now i am in no way trying to offend, so please tell me if i have, but i'd love to see this being implimented as a sort of 'bandit' style sketch. Perhaps he got hold of one of the maps i did and drew on it to mark dangerous locations, or a weapon cache (i mentioned this idea earlier).

@Ellange

Heck yeah we should collaborate! I'm all down for that. Since i have other 3D commitments that i'll have to make shortly, I'll upload the Illustrator file i used so you could finish it off for me (if you want).

I am also thinking of maybe writing up a small tut that would show you guys how i did the whole ink effect on paper. Lemme know if that would be of any use.

@ Ellange I personally love

@ Ellange

I personally love the Molag Bal. the tribal-esque depiction brings a strong sense of culture through. Tell me if i'm wrong, but this feels very dunmer to me.

Ive also been thinking lately about the different graphic styles of the cultures. Obviously the imperial culture will have a very different aesthetic than the Dunmer culture, etc etc.

What we should do, and you guys should totally help, is make visual stylesheets for all the races. References that we can use to design things off.

For the imperial syle i was exploring roman/gallo roman/medieval french designs. The Dwemer are very geometric in both design and shape, so a Moorish style would be very appropriate (some french inlay and Sicilian design is also very geometric). The dwarves i also see being very technical minded, so precise drawings that calculate positions/trajectories/values would also be appropriate (i would definitely look to Da Vinci's codex's for inspiration. Also this: https://www.google.co.nz/search?tbs=simg:CAESSQnIgKP9TVezlRo...)

The other races we would have to develop further too (nords, Argonian, Kahjiit, etc etc).

Eloth and Happy have thrown me in charge of managing and organising texture artists. Those of you doing the illustrations here sort of fall in between concepting and designing for finals. However all of you contribute to an end product that will be seen in game. If we are clever, the stuff we do here can help the zbrush artists for armor and weapon patterns, and help the architecture guys lay some detail in their work.

We also need to stop the doubling up of work. I've noticed a few of you guys are drawing up the same dwarven image. What i'll need to do is get your names, organise some groups, and assign some work.

A little bit of organisation goes a long way guys :)
