Yo
I need some crit. Sculpted this today and roughly re-topologised it (its 650 polys. I can and will reduce it). The texturing is what i need feedback on.
I'm going for a dry, midland columnar basalt speckeled with lichen. I will also add a variant that has grass and moss growing in the cracks.
DISCLAIMER: This is test for texturing. This is by no means a final asset :)
@rav: I haven't been able to download the texture pack you dropboxed me as i have used my broadband download cap. Being the poor student that i am, it may have to wait...

Robanna strikes again!
I do like the texture though I think the texture seam could be hidden better.
I don't know if they have seagulls in morrowind so the poo doesn't seem necessary. Other then that it looks awesome. Maybe adding barnacles to the texture might add something to it instead of the poo?
Wow, that looks great.

I only thought of it as weathering of the rocks. No rock formation is going to be completely monochromatic - it's good attention to detail. The seam is really visible on the topmost column and third one down. The color seems a little darker on the top of the rocks as well, which I think would be the opposite given that they would be the most exposed to the elements and erosion. This is very good otherwise :)
Perhaps i didn't make myself clear enough lol :)
the scheme above is just a 'sketch'. Like a preliminary drawing before the final paining. Thats why there are those hideous fat seams blinding your eyes.
This is what i'm aiming for.

Lots of texture variation. The gradient is going to be subtle and i'll explore it from the bottom going up. As for the seagull poo, haha the image does look like it, but its really lichen. I just spammed a brush i had i PS.
Rav outlined to me the various rock types you guys need. I'm going to do four variations: Coastal basalt (barnacles and shit), mainland Basalt (one with grass and moss, one without), and a volcanic variation.
Image below has the fixed UV's and a basecoat.
nevermind on my post. It looks like its more of a inland thing with the rocks having the white stuff (which I don't know if its a fungus or wearing) I won't make any more judgement calls because it does seam I get allot of things wrong. Anyway looks awesome keep up the good work.
Your all good smerk :) If it wasn't clear that it wasn't bird poop, then it means i didn't do the correct texture job. All critisism helps.
SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
Good job hiding the seam! This is already loads better - don't hesitate to distribute the wear and tear on the rocks a little more evenly like you did in your first attempt - it gave a much more natural look to the texture ;)
Utter Failtexture Update #1:
I'm going to throw these here to keep ya'll updated. Your more than welcome to have this particular asset if you want, but i'll be scrapping this mesh for a different texture setup.
Due to the nature of optimization and efficiency, i shall be sculpting a tileable texture for the rest of the rocks.
Back to the drawing board :/

Update #2:
Final Basalt texture. Will update with proper assets as-soon-as.
In the meantime, gimme some more rocks to sculpt!
Now its clear that its lichen and not poop.. Right guys? Right?
Possible rock formations
That second image is cool.
Update on the rocks. So so very close to being done....

Yeah, those could come in really nicely for the West Gash.

Oh wow! Those look amazing, keep it up!
eastern west gash and western ashlands.
Where west gash rocks are blown/shaped by ash.
ideal :)
eloth made a few already
Cool! I wouldn't min using 'em ;)
In game rock (just one). Woho!
DAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYUUUMM dude that looks spectacular!

I think these (with more of a reddish-black shade) would look great in areas where ash storms and wind erosion are prevalent, like the outskirts of Ald'Ruhn and around Red Mountain.
Another update. Its been a while
Adding some grass tops to a duplicate set. Next is a darker version for close to the water then DONE.
The last image of the basalts in game, they were too large, and the texture was an old one.
Here are the obj's for the models. And the dds files.

I want to get my filthy hands on those.
This looks so, so very good.
You guys did a good job, but they look just like the Dragonborn ones.

Are entirely new ones really necessary?
"They look just like the Dragonborn ones" - absolutely not, they look far more realistic and are much more potent while landscaping. Plus, did you seriously just take a physical photo of your monitor, lol :P ?
That was the clearest picture of them I could find on Google. :P
I can assure you they are different to the Dragonborn ones :)
The silhouette looks the same, but that's only because of the low poly limitations. Someone has bound to have them in game, try have a look at them up close.
Does the last textures have seams? First you removed them and later they where back. I get confused by things like that.
No seams:
