Chitin

Submitted by Ashking Wulfharth on

Hi.

I'm new here so I guess this would be the time to introduce myself. I'm a second year Computer Graphics student and I would like to specialize in 3D. I have published a few little mods for Skyrim, and I used to mod Morrowind.

I was invited to make the chitin dagger model so I figured I'd post a render and get a little feedback:

The texture is just a placeholder I made from the falmer weapons textures. I wasn't sure if we had texture artists for me to hand the UVW off to or not. I'm still becoming familiar with how things work here.

Looks nice, just need a retexture :D

You should post higher res images, wires and texture flats so we can really help you out.

Here is a higher quality pic:

And here is the model. I think you can check the wireframe on this site as well:

And here is the UVW:

For the general concept, I figured these weapons came about from Ashland tribes "gluing" different bug parts together with shalk resin, so I used a wasp stinger shape for the blade, mandibles for the guards, a section of antennae for the handle, and submentum to hold it all together.

Looks great. I would say add some wear on the edges the blade has to look like its sharp and has been use. You should know our policy on weapons. If you do one you need to do them all. This ensures visual consistency. I'll put you down for the Chitin weapons on the spreadsheet.

Make sure to add you progress to the weapons spreadsheet.

Ashking I like the detail but the mirroring is a let down, and also it doesnt correspond to our current chitin pieces.

Out of curiosity, can u use zbrush/make low polies/UV map etc?

The texture is just a quick placeholder I made from the falmer weapons. Much of the mirroring will be gone in the final version. If we have current chitin pieces, I would like to get my hands on the models and textures so I can make my weapons match.

@Ravanna- I tried to keep this as low poly as the organic shapes would allow. I can model and UV, but I don't have ZBrush yet. I'm planning to buy it within a month. Also, I understand the concept of texture baking but do we have a tutorial on here for how to apply it to our textures?

Ashking Wulfharth

If you won't be able to find some interesting tutorial, you can try and catch me on the chat here - i can explain the whole process to you if you want.

That would be great! Thank you. I'm on my phone right now, but I will send you a message when I get off work.

Ok heres the zbrush sculpt of the chitin weapon set, although i forgot some ropes/belts on the spear to hold it together.

The arrow will have insect wings instead of hair/feather.

Thanks to Ashking for making these low polies to work from :) Top fella!

Aw sweet!  I especially love that quiver!

This set never had a 'warhammer' piece?  If one is to be made, you could base it off the mantis shrimp's claw? (one on the right)

Holy crap, that's awesome! That said, a friend of mine pointed out something I didn't notice: you should bundle/cross/tangle the ropes holding the bow together. As they are, it wouldn't hold together very well; it's too weak. A bundled mass of  twine would look more realistic/natural.

Quiver is especially good.

I think ashlanders can combine chitin with some stones to make axe/mace? more effective.

The axe is designed as it was in Morrowind, but, considering there was no chitin mace or war hammer, there is a bit more design freedom.

I think items made in a lack of resources (i.e. tribal tools, junk-weapons in post-apoc worlds, weapons made by criminals in jails, etc.) is especially "exquisite". And combining of materials makes them even better.
---
Actually that is why i don't want to see abundant metals on Vvardenfell. IMHO it will spoil everything.

I'd make some home-crafted items/weapons without "material group".

I always wanted to see Dunmer use a fang knife, like the one in Dune:
[External image]

I thought of it as a replacement for chitin dagger, but as the dagger is already made, it could be a whole new weapon, perhaps with a poison permanently attached to it, and with a description saying "Fear is the mind killer" :D

I could see that being a Yokudan Dunedweller dagger.

Or a Yokudan shark-tooth dagger... either way, the style is definitely either desert or swashbuckly 'Redguard'.

We have some dental donors on island - alits, kagouti, guar, slaughterfish. Also they have bones and claws.
---
Will be good if we can anatomize them like in this mod:  http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8075/?
And craft some items from them.

Holy wow! Those are some amazingly good looking kill tools. Thank you for the appreciation, but I didn't do much. I served you up an easy pitch. You're the one who knocked it out of the park.

If all the first tier weapons will look this good, I won't want to level my character up.

damn! Ravanna, the weps gave me shivers! :D

If you are going to make Telavanni's helmets, please check the tread with Ambient bugs, I've already draw Devil Cephalopod, so you can start with some details from it. Molecrab and Fiend will be asap.

Hey Fury_on you handsome devil. You should re-post that over in the Chitin Armor Thread. I love your cephalopod concept, I think it will make for an amazing helmet. If Ravanna is too busy, I'd be happy to have a run at it.

Done thank god. Will send to a tech artist to add ingame.

Very awesome, can't wait to hit something with those

Oh wow everything you do simply looks perfect. Not only perfectly crafted but also creative and logic. Amazing.

2 words: da and yum. Conjunctions don't count ;)

Pretty sure they're insect wings.

smitey is correct

Wasn't there a club in that set?

That... is a very good point.

There was also a chitin throwing star although throwing weapons are not possible yet

And there is no chitinous vakizashi :)
But may be club would be completely another? Like striking fish?

Aaaaawwwweeee man! I forgot to make the club. Or actually I think Ravanna told me not to. I'll see what he says. If he wants one, I'll make the low poly and send it off to him. I think that if I do make one, I'll use Smitehammer's idea of using the mantis shrimp claw. A mantis shrimp can punch through an oyster shell.

There weren't any Akaviri style chitin weapons. You can't really make folded metal out of organic ingredients.

You can send me the files to get them in game. Unless you asked someone else to do it already.

There's a mod for throwing weapons somewhere on the nexus. We just need a fine tuned version because I'm not sure the original works very well with animations and such.

@ashking: do we have some mantis shrimp in Skiwind?
Also chitin is too light-weight to make club from it (from pure chitin).

agreed for that reason alone I didnt do one. Just didnt seem right.

May be we just need to add some composite stone/wood/bone cudgels, axes and tools.
IMHO it's not necessarily to make sets of tools of one material.

That weapon set is AMAZING!! It's fan f*****g tastic!
