Making Vvardenfell more immersive beyond the surface

Submitted by Ociee on

Hi, first post here - what an industrious community! Anyways, one thing I loved about Skyrim were the random encounters between Stormcloaks and Imperials, like these:

Additionally one thing I loved even more about Morrowind was intricate political balance and tensions that defined the world, yet these tensions were confined mostly to conversation and small acts of aggression.

I'm not sure if this has been proposed yet (probably has) but I think it would be interesting to see the same fights between factions in Morrowind as you see between Stormcloaks and Imperials in Skyrim. Small skirmishes such as maybe a Redoran patrol gone up too far into the Ashlands and finds themselves fighting bandits or perhaps warriors from other houses (although according to lore this is forbidden by the temple) or maybe even slaves being transported by large Hlaalu plantation mercenaries (think Dren Plantation) through the isles. Especially the whole slavery and the tension associated with that is something that could really be fleshed out more (maybe a functioning Twin Lamps questline?). In addition to the reimagined graphics and environments that I've mostly seen I'd really love to see other more intricate world details like these come out and be evinced by in-world interactions, I think it would make the world that much more immersive.

Are there any awesome ideas or implementations in the works?

Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

I like the idea.  I don't think it would be that difficult to do either, I've seen mods that add things like random werewolf vs vampire, and guards vs bandits battle encounters.  I really like the idea of the slave transportation, it could work like the prisoner transportation in Skyrim, where you could free them and give them supplies.

Go here and write some stuff up :D

I like the idea, but keep in mind though there isn't much direct conflict as the tribunal tries to keep the peace between houses.

No, there's just not much overt conflict.  Plenty of direct conflict :D  When you're rising in the ranks of whichever great house, you have to go and kill the 'new upstart' from the other two great houses (that build the stronghold you would have had).  What the temple doesn't know, will hurt the other houses.

Granted, however, this probably won't occur in a random location, perhaps an alleyway in Balmora or Ald-ruhn. Avoid the wild and Vivec city due to the randomness and the Ordinators

I hate to be a stick in the mud, but Great Houses do not engage in open combat against one-another. Disputes are settled by assassination from the Morag Tong or duels of honor (to the death) in the Arena. However, random assassinations (possibly on the road) of generic nobles or occasional fights in the Arena would be great!

Exactly my point, but much better put.  Even the camonna tong would be cool to encounter, possiby after you join a house, as no matter what Dren will hate you.

Oh! And perhaps attempts on your life by the Morag Tong as you rise in The ranks of a Great House!

Either or.  I picture camona as more likely since it is a joinable faction, while the camona tong are just easy to place as evil minor corrupt antagonists.  Maybe also if you are in the mages guild or a non-corrupt fighters guild member.

I don't see why the Cammona AND Morag Tongs couldn't make attempts on the player's life. Nobles in Great Houses use the latter to remove political opponents, and the former is just made up of all around nasty people. As for the player-joinable part, that didn't stop Bethesda.

like I said, either or. I like the idea of both, and true about that. Good point logic

Hi there Ociee! First of all, good idea and a nice first post, we're always open for any ideas concerning more immersion or depth that could be actually visible in the game (contrary to Morrowind, in which there was plenty of depth, but we could pretty much only read about those things in the dialogue).

I'm not sure if encounters similar to Skyrim's would be in place though, as other has already pointed out - Houses are hostile towards each other, but not in a state of open war, like the civil war in Skyrim. Any more concrete ideas on different encounters, assassinations and such can be written down in the topic Smitehammer posted.

As for military encounters - I was thinking about that the other day, I think ashlander exiles (ones that are just common bandits and are not accepted amongst the tribes, excluding Erabenimsun), ambushing and robbing travelling merchant caravans should be a rather common sight. It could be even used to show their hostility towards outlanders - ash bandits would only rob and spare Dunmer, perhaps it would be possible reason with them, but anyone of another race they'd just kill. I think I'm gonna write a scene now... :P

To have a random encounters like that is definitively a good idea. I'd love to see some slave merchants, imperial patrols, or a lonely alchemist searching for ingredients in the wild.

What I would love to see are the new dialogues between the npcs. I don't know if it was mentioned before, and is already in the to-do plan, but something like new lines for the crowd in taverns, or in houses would be awesome. I understand that this thing would lengthen the development process, that's why this implementation should be made after the mod release. In something like Skywind 2.0, with additional content, like Tamriel Rebuilt, new crafting, and new companions.
