Racial Profiling

Submitted by Yixist on

Hi guys, hope I'm in the right place for this :)

Morrowind had a few neat features as far as differentiating the races was concerned, but unfortunately these were abolished in Oblivion and not really addressed in Skyrim as Bethesda continued to lean toward a more generic fantasy feel.

In particular the crocodile-like swimming animations for the Argonians come to mind, as well as the claw attacks of the Khajiits, which I feel has never really been done justice in any of the games, Morrowind included, but are always pertained to in lore. I enjoyed the realism of not being able to wear boots with the beast races too, due to having the classic dog-leg shape which gave them a much more animalistic vibe.

The way that some of the races are presented in concept art intrigued me as well- much less of the classic fantasy, and something much more akin to the style of Morrowind. The cunning and bulbous-eyed looking Bosmer, the many-nippled Orsimer, gaunt and heavy-lidded Dunmer, and the elongated head of the Breton to name a few.

I've looked around the forums for information on these but as of yet have been unable to find anything.

In conjunction with this, I'd be interested to know if the skills of acrobatics and athletics are to be implemented too- I would love to see what could be done with them, even if they were merged into a single skill. It would very much suit agile races such as the Khajiit and Bosmer. Unarmed too, would be great as a comeback, if it actually could DO anything.

I suppose my question is: Are the individual races to be altered a bit or is the plan to stick with the Skyrim models, anims and attributes already implemented in the game files? Are there any thoughts on new animations and skill trees in particular, ones that would really add to the individuality of characters?

I imagine it wouldn't be too much trouble to turn the animations for the Khajiits into a more deadly swipe, keeping the same hit-boxes, or am I wrong?

Concerning the races - we're remaking all the faces to stick with their most interesting depictions in lore. I'll be doing concept art for that soon, probably (already made some for Dunmer) ;)
Bodies are not yet considered, but I'd really like to see more changes - the physique of each race should be different, insectoid Dunmer, four nippled Orcs etc.

As for beast races having their own set of animations and body type - that is extremely hard to pull off. I know modders have been  working on it and didn't really succeed yet unfortunately. I've been dreaming to see that happen ever since I saw those horrible Oblivion's genetic mistakes, but as of now that's not too likely to happen. Animations are really hard to make, and to make them good enough quality to fit with the mocap animations of other humanoids - that would require an expert.

'artifex0' on Skyrim Nexus has already made two mods to replace the Khajiit and Argonian legs with their digitigrade versions.

I think it would be good to go with the new Khajiit hands in Skyrim.
The proximal phalanges can be normal, intermediate phalanges can have padded skin and distal phalanges can be replaced by nails.

It does look practically possible for Khajiit and Argonian to wear certain kinds of footwear made for non-beast races. Upon attempting to equip any other kind of shoes , the PC can receive the "You cannot equip this item" message.

Also, the Khajiit have many variants based on the time they were born on , it would be interesting to see different variants in Khajiit NPCs.

"Monk" used to be a PC class in Oblivion and had the "Unarmed" skill as a major skill. This implies some kind of martial art reference involving lack of weapons. It would be interesting to see how spears work and how they would change the fighting mechanism if they are implemented successfully.

These mods don't add new animations and therefore don't look very good, especially the Argonians.

The remade races will be optional I hope?

Why would they be?

I agree with Jorgen, because I'm not a fan of the proposed changes: I think the models for skyrim races are perfect. Not everybody is fan of the more fantasy characters, so is it better to make it optional?  Even in the latest elder scolls game (online) there aren't many changes on the races. If it would added in skywind, I would find it a waste of work and time.

Dragomir

Why would they be?

Why wouldn't they be?  Not everybody wants remade Morrowind characters.  I know I don't.  I don't see why that would have to be integrated into the base mod.

My issue is that he seems to be saying it's going to be standard in the mod.  I really don't see why it should be standard rather than a sub-mod, or whatever you'd like to call it.

Yes, maybe you're right, some little changes, but not too much.

I haven't followed the discussion with the other senior members but for me any change to races should be optional (or at least easy to disable).

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies :)

I can definitely understand that the digitigrade leg would be a difficult alteration to make, as there are already so many animations that would have to be tweaked.

I do like the skyrim race models, but would definitely think they could benefit from a tweak or two. It could even be that the features that divide the skyrim versions and the skywind versions are on a slider of their own, so people can choose in-game whether they want to have a character that fits the lore better or not. This means that people can still create the dull medieval-human characters that they seem so fond of.

What are the thoughts on hand-to-hand fighting then? Will the same animations of Skyrim be used but with an added skilltree, allowing progression? Even if the Khajiit were just given more prominent claws on the model it might look a little better when they swipe, and then have it so they switch to base standard fist-fighting anims when gauntlets are equipped on 'em.

i am for beter swimming argonions and khajit ho wil pul out there claws in a fist ficht  but no no to 4 nippel orc and argonians and khajit whit there baeste legs why? thats just to much orc are elf race so the dont have 4 nipels  and u would need to adjust al the boots and leg armor and cloths for somthing the only did in morrowind (i think i am not sure )

I know the concept art for orcs had 4 nipples and pig faces, but really if any race is getting multi-nipped it's gotta be Khajiit.  At least Suthay and Cathay - maybe not Ohmes.

Denevir Bosmeri men will sometimes have horns and look sort-of-impish as a contrast to their gorgeous female counterparts,....
Err....when you say horns and impish how much so? Sort of like Clavicus Vile's statue in Skyrim?

Or complete Kirkbride-ification?

Or how they looked in Morrowind?

OR just sort of aspects of each? I'm still sort of concerned about this topic considering Bosmer are my go to Mer and I know that we're trying to bring in aspects of the concept art and such but I'm not partial to looking like a Scamp. I enjoy the Skyrim models for the Bosmer to be honest but I'd be fine with a little bit of those aspects mentioned I suppose.

Eham and I are working on the new race system, here's our plan.

The only use of our new races built into skywind will be vivec and yagrum, as unique characters who speak.

The Race Overhaul will be optional, and in 2 files.
1. main races, replacing men and mer races, but not orsimer, arg or khajit.
2. Additional races for LPing, including dwemer, (and alternate start), Tang mo, and others i have time for.

I usually got a little miffed with the beast races not being able to wear the majority of helms and footwear. But perhaps a good trade off would be the introduction of footwraps and or leg guards. As for helmets their should be multible variations of existing helms so that beast races can have a full suit of armor. I want to remain true to lore and feel so it it doesn't equate well then its no matter.

its the legs every 1 gets workt up on about and the only did it in morrowind personely i find it a thing to forget like the ugly faces of oblivion

Hmmm... I feel like this idea, while really cool in concept, could take a lot of work. I may lose karma for this, but the modeling on armors and clothing for extra breasts could be a lot of work collectively.  Of course if someone is willing to do the modelling, go for it, I am all for it. But keep it separate. People have other mods, and many might not be compatible with the new bodies. head/hair models would be cool, but not anything that might mess with current models i.e. 4 breasts.
