[WIP] Bow of Shadow

Hey everybody,

I wanted to share an update.

So this is my second weapon I started it over a week ago and have been working on it when I have time.

The model is not in game yet and still needs to be skinned to the bow draw bones. The images are essentially screen caps from Maya, (viewport 2.0 renderings) they come across a little dark but I’m not going to waste time doing nice lighting.

The Last two images are of my bow next to the original Morrowind Bow of Shadows and the Skyrim Nightingale Bow for reference.

Quick question that has

Quick question that has nothing to do with the model.

Will this bow be a longbow or a shortbow? In Morrowind it was classified as a longbow I think, but your awesome design looks more like a shortbow, which I find more fitting anyway for this bow because it is a sneaky thief/assassins bow which usually are shortbows.

Also I really like how it looks and I usually play with shortbows so I really want this to be one ;).

Anyway, keep up the amazing work. It looks great.

Hello, I have been following

Hello, I have been following this mod for some time now, mainly due to nostalgia and looking at the great work that is being done. I currently don't have Skyrim or a PC that can run it, nor do I have any skills that could help make this, but I thought that I at least could try to give some suggestions. It feels a little bad to have a first post critisising this, as it does look good, but it does not look like a good bow. That can be said about most skyrim bows, they look like something only made for decoration purposes that would be impossible to bend, and would break if it happened. This one looks like it culd be used, but that wood in the middle is way too thick, and there's no reason for it to be.

And it's not only the bows that are too thick in Skyrim. Most of the weapons and armors just look like something best suited on a statue. Some of the shields are probably over 20 cm thick. I just hope that Skywind will be going in a practical direction with the equipment, and not in this direction. I mean, some legendary artifacts should be over the top, but they should look useable. Personally I think this bow, due to its connections would be more suited to look thinner and more elegant. The hand held ballista look should i my opinion be given to some other bow.

I love how the bow looks and

I love how the bow looks and I really like the small details you've added. It gives it more the feel of a deadric artifact while keeping the design simple. I too found that Skyrims bows where a bit to ornate and extravagant. But I disagree with SEMK about this bow, I think the design really suites the bow.

If this would be a shortbow (for reasons I stated in a previous post) this would be my go-to  bow.

I love it. keep up the amazing work.

I like the idea of making it

I like the idea of making it a short bow, the concept is to make it look like a leaf spring recurve. The design would be heavy as hell, unfortunately, in reality each leaf should be way thinner, like 0.25 inch thick aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy. If it was made out of Morrowind/Skyrim equivalent aluminum or magnesium it would need to be anodized, AKA, a hard coating to make the bow more durable and reduce denting and scratching. The wood parts are purely ornamentation covering a center attachment point for the springs and grip. There should be bolts or rivets of some sort running though the leaves of the spring into the center, actually attaching it. When I put those bolts or rivets on it they looked way to modern when small and to crude when large, plus they interrupted the pattern work I put on the main leaf. I could add the anodizing but I think it would look to modern also, or just odd.

It has been to long a time since I played Morrowind so I don't remember the short bows. I'll look into what it would mean to make it a short bow. It would be cool if it was unique in that it had the power of a long bow but in a smaller package. For now though I think I will just try to get it in game for testing.

I was actually thinking

I was actually thinking something similar, but didn't trust my own limited knowledge of bows. I'm glad someone more knowledgeable than myself said something. :P
