Armor and Interface (The Importance of Pauldrons)

Submitted by Saivryn on

So far in armor development, I have been noticing a constant thing throughout most armor sets modeled and designed. The differences in armor pieces aren't very definitive in the overall design. In Morrowind, having the pauldrons unequipped could completely change the look of an armor set, but right now, most armor designs for Skywind have pauldrons that blend too much into the other pieces to the point where they barely exist. I personally believe that the pauldrons should be loud and proud, but not as overly exaggerated as the ones in Morrowind. For example, I really liked the original deadric shoulder plates, but Kurasaki's deadric armor, while I love the rest of it, I think that we should use larger pauldrons that better reflect the original's.

In most of the new armor designs, I can't even really see where the pauldrons become their own piece of the outfit, as they look more like direct parts of the cuirass, or sleeves.

I'd like to build this as a thread for discussion and thought in regards to this, and other armor interface related topics.

Right now we're going with Skyrim's armour system, and even if we make pauldrons separate later on not all armours will have that.

I was mostly speaking in future tense, in regards to when the Morrowind armor system is implemented if so. So forgive me if I sounded harsh, I was simply curious on the current state of the armor system. Though I suppose my inquiry could still be applicable, because I wonder how the armor we have now would work in the event the the original interface is implemented.

But I still believe that we should amp up a few shoulder pads in certain sets, because it seems that since the original pauldrons were so ridiculously oversized, that we end up trying to do the opposite sometimes.

Do we though? Did you even see Skywind's armour designs? They all have pretty big, elongated pointy pauldrons. And not all pauldrons in Morrowind were big either.

Yes, of course I have. I do not mean all of the designs thus far, I need to find examples of what I'm referring to.

Don't post stuff like this in the Armor forum. It belongs in General Ideas. This forum is for actual armors being actually made. If you have opinions (which this project has more than enough of), please share in the appropriate thread.
