[RELz] LAMPS, LANTERNS, SCONES, TORCHES by Vita

Submitted by grumpycat on

All the models in this thread need to be redone for legal and esthetic purposes before we will do a release . If you feel like you can contribute by doing some or all of these models then please leave a comment at the bottom of this thread.

Let us know what 3d modeling program and also what year it is you use, as we need to find out if we need to convert the files for you or get you setup with appropriate importers.

Hi, I'm new here. Came up to the site recently and was kinda inspired by what you do here. I'd like to share a model I just made. Hope you like it.

Tools used : 3ds Max 2011, NifScope

Here some images of what I've got so far.

And here is a lantern still needed to be finalized(too bright, glow map is horrible etc). But before that I have to chose one of the following versions as a base for others similar object. So feel free to share you opinion.

A.

B.

Awesome! We want more of your awesomeness :)

Oh yeah, these look perfect.

As I’m moving forward making others light object I’ve got a little question. Don’t know who to ask, so I just drop it here.

Hanging and bouncing lanterns with havoc physics? I hope there is no problem with that. Because is what I’m about to do.

Love this very much <3

A nif person, you are full of surprises! Be my guest with havok, there are swinging lanterns, so some are animated. We can copy and paste mechanics from existing ones to get these going on the appropriate ones.

I don't think candle sticks have hovok, i can see those getting knocked around a lot if we do?

The lamps and candles are really nice! I think that animated lamps are an excellent idea.

a bit off topic: will there be  sconces for lamps and torches, like the ones in skyrim ,  so you can pickup the lamp or the torch and put them back again? (I am asking this because i remember in morroblivion some lamps were in the ground instead of the sconce, especially in Caldera)

I’m glad that my initiative concerning animated lanterns got a positive reception. Of course it can be done like they did in Skyrim: a static mesh plus light spot above it. Is enough to make people believe that this is actually a source of light. I don’t really want to do it this way, since I feel like I can do better.

@ HappyChappy, what you mean by “copy and paste mechanics”? If I get it right you have already some swinging animated object and you think of using it to animate new ones? Is a bit confusing because I almost finished a skeleton for hanging things. I guess you won’t blame me for that :) And concerning candlestick you are right, it is as static as can be. It would be a really bad idea to do everything movable and collidable. I imagine what a mess it would be :)

@Silvermodder, actually did not think about scones yet. It seems that removing torches in Skyrim is scripted and there is not much to do with models there.

For the hanging lanterns some of them have a sway. So for example check out "\Data\meshes\morrowind\clutter\lanterns\lantern03.nif"  and it has NiControllerManager which has the controller for animating the nif.

Now i wont pretend to understand the mechanics of how it works, but what I mean is that for swaying lanterns we just need to make sure we use the same controller.

Have being quite busy lately, however I managed to more or less finalize what I started.  No controllers or animations. No need in my opinion, simple ragdolling is enough. Unless you want it to idle move time to time simulating wind, then I would gladly take a look at "\Data\meshes\morrowind\clutter\lanterns\lantern03.nif" controller. Unfortunately I don’t have it and have no idea where to find it.

A little showcase…

Ah man these are great. Keep up the awesome work! Looking forward to seeing these in-game.

Moving on to the carryable torches and encounting a little problem. The mesh I made works just fine in game as long it replaces vanilla Skyrim torch. As soon as clone it to have a different object it makes animation stuck when trying to drop it while holding in hand. I guess is something to have with animation graph. Any suggestions ?

Honestly, I'm not sure if it's even worth the effort to make a new torch. I mean a torch is a torch. Plus, if you travel from Morrowind to Skyrim, and get a torch in Skyrim, you'd end up with two different torches, which is kinda dumb. But hey, these are just my opinions.

Yes, yes, it’s just a torch, who cares. However I don’t see why habitants of Morrowind should use the same torches as they have in Skyrim. And what is bad in having 2 or 3 different looking torches in game. But no matter. Afterall, I’m here to shape things and not to mess in to the game mechanics.

You make'th the variety, we place'th them in game :)

Sconces?  Though I would love to see someone using a flaming biscuit as a light source.

I just don't want to see him waste his time and effort trying to fix up torches, when he could be putting that time into other more important lighting stuff. We actually had issues trying to get Morrowind torches to work before, and we had his issue before, and we just decided to use Skyrim torches. You don't even really see a difference really, and a player's inventory isn't cluttered up with multiple torch types.

@Mehh, I took a better look on the custom carryable lights issue. It appears that game engine supports only one and unique original torch. Anything else will be a little headache to make it work properly. I understand well that you rather prefer it attached to a wall instead of messing with so little things. Yet I’m curious, you say : “You don't even really see a difference”. While it makes a lot of difference to me.

Those look great! my only note is that the wood of the middle torch should look a bit more burnt.

Well, I just hope we can get them equippable in game this time. I'm not against new torches.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/37665/?

"We created a new type of weapon not really seen in TESV Modding, the Combat Staff. Held in the left hand like a Torch, you can use it to Block and Bash. Once Bash an enemy with a staff a unique effect takes place. One in Particular creates vines that trips up the enemy and may knock them down. To craft these staves we invented a new type of crafting, once crafted you use the corresponding spell to imbue the staff with Nature Magic."

see this guy made staves that work as torches and they are not replacers and its possible to create lanterns too, see this mod (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/17416/?)  this one uses skse but i think it is not because of the torch itself but rather using it in the belt so we just need to understand how to make it right

I would love to say "Yeees", but no. As cool as those lantern mod is , it's not really what I'm aiming for. Comon, armors, tons of magic effect and spells and of course  scripts to manage all that. May the nine protect me :)

I guess combat staff is the same story. Is actually a shield looking like glowing staff, and magic effect with light attached when worn.

hey i am just saying its is possible to add extra torches and lanterns and someone has already made it. I gave the mod links because if we find trouble to add torches or lanterns in game we can do reverse engineering to understand how did they do to add them to  game. (and i agree with you that it would be difficult to replicate or make something similar to that mod, i will be happy if we get simple lanterns and torches)

Thank you Silvermodder. Your post was very usefull afterall. I always knew that custom equipable lights is possible. The goal is to make it clean and easy with no scripts and tricks. And I just have found a solution.

That's wonderful news!

Cool. When all the candles and lighting stuff are done, I will edit some of them, and change their flame color. I have a text pad I made a while back of all the candles in Morrowind that contain different colored flames, and their RGB. So yeah, we'll have blue candles with blue colored flames, red candles with red colors flames, etc.
