Difficulty

Submitted by SEMK on

Hey, having read almost everything in this forum now, there's one thing I'm wondering about. How you are going to handle combat difficulty.

Will opponents be leveled, and to which extent? How will the difficulty gap between places be? In skyrim, the difficulty of opponents was very unimmersive. You could fight dragons quite easily early on, making some of the supposedly "godlike" dragons less dangerous than much less impressive opponents. That was a result of how the story was set up, but in Morrowind, there is no such problem. There is a very fluid progression in enemies, and very few are supposed to have godlike power.

I first played Morrowind on a cousin's xbox as a kid, and I sucked at everything, got lost everywhere and progressed slowly. But I got better, and started wandering around the wilderness, cliffracers finally got easy and I had stolen some really powerful equipment from a merchant I killed. Then, in the middle of an ash storm, I could see a weird, glowing creature wandering around(was either a frost or storm atronach). Of course, I had to check it out, when I got closer it turned towards me and fired a spell. Dead. That sucked, it was a long time since I had saved last, so I quit. But at the same thing, it was what made me love the game. It set the mood for me, but at the same time, I was disappointed when I played it again when I was older and didn't suck at the game.

Really hoping that Skywind gives some of the same feeling.

If I personally have anything to do with difficulty, you'll be crying to your mommy every turn in Morrowind.

Could have sword alex addressed this in the forums somewhere. Not sure if we have anything concrete but I think it was something along the lines of shit wont be leveled, but you wont have any issues as long as you stay away from places you shouldnt' be at when you're a low level... like daedric ruins, or playing with the dwemer.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the Requiem mod for Skyrim. I kind of wish the Skywind difficulty level is that of Requiem... Just a personal hope.

Region based is the way to go here. No silly level scalling. If you want to go to Daedric ruin gear up and skill up - you won't very likely survive there early in the game. Same for some regions, ashlands, Molag Amur, Red Mountain (especially). Don't shape the world around the player - force the player to shape to the world.

^And how about the weapons and armor? will they be the same story? Because that would be so much more fun, instead of 90% of the world is easy, and the other 10% is sliightly less easier bosses.

Should be done like in Morrowind as well, making all the high tier stuff really hard to get.

Personally i've always had the philosophy that games should have scalable difficulty (not scalable leveled list) fully customizable and can be as easy or difficult as the player wants. I usually play of the hardest difficulties of most games but i know plenty of people who don't have the time, are to old or young, or just not skilled enough to play a extremely hard game. However thats just my opinion that people shouldn't be excluded because of difficulty and if i was designing a game thats what i'd do. But I'm completely fine with leveled areas as long as its not a complete slaughterfest once you get out of a and start exploring unless you go off to like the ashlands at level 1.

Keep the game more morrowind like.... Not a world that scale around you...this is the reason why after morrowind the sequels felt so dumbly easy.. Morrowind is harsh and people should deal with it :)
