Modding scrub.

Submitted by jamesmicheldor… on

I've been playing Morrowind and Oblivion for years, but only used a few fun mods for Morrowind as a kid. After getting a new computer, playing Oblivion on the 360, then getting a better computer and getting both games off steam, I have wanted nothing more then to be able to play Morrowind (which is a much better RPG) on the Oblivion tech. Finding this got me really excited, and confused.

I'm going to be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing. I tried downloading stuff off of the thread, but it won't let me open anything. Hopefully when I figure that out I can make this work.

Anybody have any tips? Why can't I open the downloads? What do I have to do after I get them open? Is there something different that I have to do for Steam instead of the CD's?

I really hope I can make this work, I've wanted to be able to do this for a long time.

First read the FAQ.  http://morroblivion.com/faq  And read all of the FAQs and instructions that are linked there.

Then go to http://www.7-zip.org/ and download the 32 bit version (unless you're on windows 7, then download the 64 bit version).  Install the program.  It will let you open archives (.zip, .rar, .7z files) and extract them.

Then make sure you've downloaded everything on the download thread. http://morroblivion.com/forums/morroblivion/mods/753

Then watch the installation guide videos on the installation page http://morroblivion.com/installation

Thanks a million, I'll let you know how it all works out. I've never been accused of being particularly great with computers, so I hope I can make this work without having to ask for too much help. But hey, whatever it takes to make a great game even greater.

Sorry to be back already.

I'm slowly downloading everything and going over the readmes. Before I do anything stupid, just another question: It talks about having to install the games a certain way. How do I check this with the Steam downloads and how do I put them in the right folder?

When you install Steam make sure you dont install it in the Programs folder. For example, I installed steam right on the c: drive. After that, download and install Oblivion. Don't worry about installing Oblivion in a particular order, Steam takes care of all that stuff.

I already installed Steam, and it's in the Program files. Is there any way I can just move it, or do I have to uninstal the client and re-install it in a different way?

Edit: I was able to simply move it over to the C: folder. Will this work to set up the mod, or am I going to have to uninstal everything and set it back up in a different folder?

What I keep hearing is if you're running Windows Vista or 7, you need to make sure Oblivion is not in the Programs folder.

I'm not sure if you can just move the steam folder and expect it to work. I would think there would be links broken or such. Personally, I would just uninstall and then reinstall steam in the c: folder. I know that's a hassle because then you have to redownload and reinstall everything, but at least you know there shouldn't be any problems if you do it that way.

So after moving the steam folder around, do your other Steam games work?

Morrowind and Oblivion worked alright, but when I tested to see if Team Fortress 2 was still working the same, it wouldn't connect to the Steam network so I couldn't get any of my items, participate with any of my groups, and it kept kicking me. I ended up just uninstalling it and reinstalling everything else. Honestly, the only thing I was really worried about was losing my TF2 stats, and that's fine. I'm just starting to install the mod. Thanks for all the help.
