[HUB] Clutter

Submitted by qwertyasdfgh on

Clutter in Morroblivion certainly needs some attention.

Problems:

  • Insanely high polycount on some models, to the point where it can actually affect performance. I already had to replace the worst offenders - bottles, but there's more.
  • Bad collision - a lot of objects use only basic box shapes, which makes them collide with stuff around them more than needed. Also, NifConverter applied wrong Havok setting to them, so this should be fixed too.
  • Some of the replaced models don't look anything like the original ones + some items supposed to be part of the 'set' look very different from each other.

Solution(s):

  • Well, the obvious solution is to replace problematic models - so this is what I am going to do. The best way, of course, is to make all of them from scratch, but it will take too much time, so I'll have re-use some of the existing assets. The most basic stuff (like plates) can be made from retextured Oblivion meshes.
  • All meshes should be given proper convex shape collision and some - like bowls - need to be hollow inside, because there's often stuff lying there ingame.
  • Lastly, all new models will use a more convenient folder structure.

I will update this thread with progression, but there's rather a lot of clutter items, so I suspect the whole thing can take some time.

Wow, this will be a lot of work. Though personally I would only use retextured Oblivion items when they look almost exactly like the Morrowind ones. Also there are a few very good replacers out there for Morrowind, maybe those could be used if they look good enough.

This is what I'm going to do. Also, they will be modified anyway, so I bet you won't even notice - but using Oblivion models as base speeds up things and lets me re-use good collision from them. BTW, current replacements look nothing like Morrowind's, so it won't be worse anyway.

Could you link to some you like? A lot of them are just subsurfed originals, which is not very good.

I was thinking of mods like these: 1 2 3 4 5 or even something as big as this. I'm pretty sure a lot of these meshes are already included in Morroblivion and might be the reason for the discrepancies. And you're right of course, anyting will be better than for example that yellow plate which is grey right now.

Hey qwertyasdfgh

The same models were in Skywind, ported from Morroblivion, so I had this exact same problem/solution. So I spent a solid amount of time replacing the really bad culprits in Skywind. Now we have also had a lot of 3d modelers making new stuff over the last couple of years.

So I think the solution is to convert Skywind models to Oblivion format. Ormin has a firm understanding and created a tool that converts collisions from Oblivion format to Skyrim, so he would be able to reverse that if we can convince him.

Now the biggest problem is that Skywind models don't have final collisions as it stands. So my suggestion is that you take the Skywind clutter models and make good collision models for them, rather than the job you were going to do of making them from scratch.

That way both projects can help each other out :)

Thanks, I'll check if there is something we can use. I also found this mod which looks pretty good.

HappyChappy,
Yeah, I imagine you would also face the same problem. I haven't followed Skywind's progress very closely, but if you really have some models you can share, that would be great. I'll send you a PM.
