Is it possible to reduce the opacity of the ash storms. I can barely see five feet in front of me when they are active and it gets really annoying when trying to find things for quests.

I understand that it is a "feature" of the ash storms. However in the original Morrowind they did not obscure the game anywhere near as much. I was not able to find any of the book pages to find the Mabrigash camp and had to rely on my knowledge of the quest.

The Opacity of Ash Storms is not going to be changed.
You are not supposed to be able to see very well during an Ash Storm...

I've played Morrowind, Ash Storms design was very different, still it blocked your sight of view as much as this one. I believe it will be nice to have it redesigned but opacitiy is realistic.

How do Ash storms work? Is it just a texture i could edit? If so, i would gladly make a low-opacity ash storm mod.

I made a quick fix to improve the current ash storms to a more morrowind style ash storms (red). Feel free to try and give some feedback.

And brutal7, if you like to change the opacity, go to "...\data\textures\sky" and edit the 0aamwdustcloud.dds file with some proper program.
