SkyWind Content for OpenMW

Submitted by DeepSpaceBass on

Would you guys be willing to put out the source files for SkyWind when its done so it can be used in an OpenMW mod?

That would probably be a person by person decision if they want their stuff in a different project aswell. IN addition, openMW uses morrowind .nifs, and skywind uses skywind .nifs, so we'd need to convert them.

You accidently said they're both .nifs

Yes, individuals will have to either deny or accept you using their assets. Personally, I think you should make your own, but that's just me.

They are actually both nifs, however different types of nifs. It's confusing. I don't like nifs. The only real way to see the difference is see if it'll actually load into the game :P

Why? It would save a massive amount of time and effort to replicate something that could just as easily be done by sharing. Its not like anybody is making money off of either project.

People claim copyrighted You Tube videos all the time because they have their music in it, but it's not like anyone is losing any money, unless the video is just a re-upload of the original.

No one person or group could possibly represent everyone's work. they could take what people give them and make the rest themselves. That is what should happen

I for one know a lot of voice actors would not want their voice used in other projects without their permission.. I realize it is all for progress but taking something is not right if you don't have permission.

There are so many assets that we still use from people who we have either lost contact with or don't remember, so splitting everything up will be quite hard.

Those individuals need to read the terms and conditions of our site.  If you post content and/or submit your work to our projects, such as Morroblivion and Skywind, we get to use it forever.

This is set up that way for a reason - so people can't fuck over our projects later by saying "NOOOOO, pull my content out of Skywind, I don't like you guys anymore, wahhh wahhh wahhh".

So if everything belongs to the project, what are you saying to people who want to use any of the content?

That's a good question.  It's a moot point as of now, since Skywind is not complete, but it will be something to think about.  Personally, I am all in favor of sharing with OpenMW, or any other "open" projects.  My choice would be to license it under a Creative Commons Share-and-Share-Alike Attribution Non-Commercial License, but that's just me.

I'm in favor of sharing. Because hell, why not? Skywind stuff is awesome, and why not allow them to use it? The only people benefiting from all of this are the players.

Not to be mean, but if they did give us the finger and decide to use it without our consent, well, there ain't shit we can do about it really.

If they did use Skywind assets, I would hope they would at least credit the creators who made the assets.

I'm pretty sure they already started using some of the assets a while back. I don't know if they continued to do so, or not, though.

As long as the material is credited when it is released it seems harmless. However if the creator of their material comes forth and expresses their individual content be removed it should be negotiated. Oh and voice assets shouldn't be shared that seems wrong, I personally wouldn't want my voice on someone eles mod.

yeah... voice acting is one of the bigger things here.. especially with some of the people that might be involved.. there might be a legal sh*tstorm if they use that officially. Also, not all final VA clips will actually be uploaded to the website.. but are still going to be used in skywind (my clips for example) so what then? that is not under the websites contract.

Everything except voice assets seem harmless to share unless directly contacted otherwise. Even if stated in the website's rules posting material becomes the sites to use, individuals voices should be the exception. If the voices are shared or openly expressed they will be shared, it would or could scare potential amazing voice actors from joining the project.

So would disturbing other artistic properties to other sites...for me I really don't care (do what you want and whatever etc, etc) but the same could be said for any number of jobs on this site that don't include voice acting.

Music is the property of each respective artist. There are ample links to profiles, soundcloud and email to get a hold of them if you wish to use their material. Ask for permission before using any of their work.

I doubt the voices would be used in OpenMW. I mean we have tons of mods which add dialogue to vanilla Morrowind NPCs - there's no way that the voice actors would voice those mod added dialogue lines.

There are a lot more complications here..

Not only will ABSOLUTELY NONE of the VA that makes it into the final skywind be uploaded to the site but what about links from soundcloud? there is no way in hell you will convince any court that you own that.. So i would say tread very carefully.. I am saying right now, Absolutely NO voice acting is going to OpenMW because there is just WAY too many complications (not to mention an altered script)

OpenMW is just an engine capable of reading Morrowinds files. I almost 100% sure that OpenMW has never used any of SkyWinds assets. It is already possible to use SkyWinds assets in Morrowind without Morrowind, so it it possible someone converted some of them in.

If anything the decision to release assets is up to the main developers, and should only be done when the project is complete.

All content will most likely (if shared) be posted (I assume excluding Voice assets) to the public to use, however if any creator wishes their particular work not to be he or she will request it's removal. I believe if that's the case then the main developers will conclude whether it's justified to be removed. However if enough people decline releasing their work to the public then all together the Skywind assets will not be released to the public

I am for sharing, but only if it's handled correctly. (time taken to credit asset creators, hearing if a member would like their work removed, and removing if there is a legitimate reason. (But all work already in game cannot be removed)

I know exactly what OpenMW is. I am almost 100% sure that they have used Skywind assets at one point, but may have discontinued working with them for whatever reason.

The openMW team has never used our assets as part as their project. They are making an engine and nothing more. Any use of our assets has been by a person not part of the team or a by a team member for their personal use... We have gone over this before and last time it ended up with one of their team leaders coming down to explain what happened.

Why go back if they can move forward?
OpenMW > OpenOB > OpenSR

Well then there was an incident, not as a decision by the OpenMW team, but still, it happened.

After seeing this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoeIaYkc0Do), I wouldn't mind seeing Skywind's assets in OpenMW, but obviously, it'd be best to wait until most of the major objects are remodeled, and with things such as Vivec almost done, I think it'd be great.

Don't mistake my words for hostility, I am very just as a person when it comes to things like other projects using this project's assets.
