I have soul trap and soul gems... I am able to 'capture' souls, but my inventory doesn't reflect this. I am currently trying to caputure the Ash Ghoul soul for Skink in Sadrith Mora.

I can't seem to caputre souls of any kind, though, or at least it doesn't look like I am able to. Help!
Differently how? Cuz I can't get this quest to work. If I have only grand soul gems in my inventory soul trapping an ash ghoul only fills it to the "greater" level and skink won't accept them. If I have black soul gems in my inventory the ash ghouls soul fills those all the way, but skink still won't accept them. If I soul trap and kill another creature with a grand soul to give myself a filled regular grand soul gem, skink still won't accept it. All I want to do here is become the arch mage of the guild, but if I went the duel route trebonius would never show up in the arena, so I was trying for the peaceful route but I can't get past this soul gems quest. Any suggestions?
You need to go and kill the specific ash ghoul quest points you to and loot "Soul of an Ash Ghoul" from him. Just any ash ghoul will not do.
Also you Do Not have to Duel Trebonius there is Option, He will Step Aside and Stay as your Adviser and you Become Arch Mage.
