First, with the cloth roofs

First, with the cloth roofs added it lacked more clutter of that kind, so the rope railings and lantern fixed that. As for the shape - your's was a bit too straight, so I added back the curve from the original. I also replaced the shells to be on the side as decoration, so that they're not so imposing. Hopefully that makes the design a bit more flowing, as well as still fitting with the general feel of our Ald'Ruhn architecture.

Overhunging part of pylon

Overhunging part of pylon better to make thin - from wood or this road material (chitin?).
It could even have some small elevating bridge.

How about removable insect

How about removable insect shell stairs, but raised more so people can climb that insane slope.  Stairs and handrail could be designed to be easily installed on slots in the ramp structure so goods can be rolled up and down with the help of rope and pulley at the top and stairs installed for easy access.  This would make the structure more versatile, lore friendly, and easily repairable.

This setup should also include a platform at the base for goods and a crane on the opposite side for easy loading.  Remove the decoration, as shown in the images I posted (i support #2), they serve no purpose and would probably only weaken the wall.

We could go with something

We could go with something entirely different as well as long as it keeps the same feel:

That would be ideal, but only if we could scale the rest of the city to match, which we can't.  That would certainly get my vote otherwise.

I would love to be able to

I would love to be able to please everyone, but I have to stick to what the majority wants so I'm trying to produce stuff that ultimately everyone will be happy with :) And its true what Smite said about the concept- it's a beautiful concept and we've considered it before but unfortunately it would mean re-scaling everything, which is an impossibility.

I've gone for drago's concept because eloth said he would provide one for me to work from, and eloth is the one who put me on this project so I trust his judgement. Not only that but I personally quite like the shells on the side, I don't see how they'll weaken the structure and I think house redoran would take pride in their architecture and be glad to decorate it with the shells of native dead creatures they've killed- look at skar, for instance, big fat crab with rich people living in it :)

Here's the new platform.

I have read the entire thread

I have read the entire thread and while most of the buildings have many merits, this is an unfortunate example of the majority outweighing the critical minority to produce a product that is worse than the original.  Fortunately there is still time to improve this design since it is useless because of its scale, which i hadnt thought to mention.

Well the concept art that

Well the concept art that Sasquatch posted was what i had in mind saying bigger/more massive (i was not reffering to scale, i do realise it can be scaled up :) ) - and yes, i would love to see something like this, even if not as big, just more... hmm.. complexed? But still i find the model you created really nice, i like it and it is good interpretation of what Morrowind had to offer. Especially if you imagine it combined with other of your models, moon. I just believe, that while it's important to keep close to original models and design, Ald'Ruhn deserves some loving touches that would create an atmosphere of bigger, more impressive city. And i do believe its possible to create the model based on that concept, that wouldn't be blown out of proportions especially since Ald'Ruhn will have more "massive" feel with the walls around it :)

Also, mooncactus i really appreciate how you take into consideration how majority feel about that, but to be honest - it is your model and if you like how it is right now, you should make it this way - and you can ignore what i wrote above ;). That is one of your privilliges as a modeler. You got it right, you won't please everyone, so might as well listen to your guts. Anyways - great work as always.

E: Not sure if the post under mine was response to what i wrote, but just in case i want to make it clear. I JUST wrote that what i had in mind in earlier post (and this one too) was the art he posted, didnt state what he thinks about anything really... Also - compare the barrels/crates/urns in the screenshot and the concept art - i think it's pretty obvious that concept one is a bit bigger :)

I don't think that Squatch

I don't think that Squatch was referring to the actual size of the structure, but rather to the general style and simplicity to the design of it, and the wall behind it. That being single material, very mineral-istc, simple, and most of all, thick. Militaristic with absolutely little to no decoration, and made of a sort of adobe.

Edit- Personally, I love morrowind's original designs for redoran, especially the towers.

And on a side note, a while back I posted about the shell, and I realized something. Redoran style generally seems to favor the horseshoe crab, which the shell did seem to resemble-

Also, even more importantly, here is what I believe is MK's concept for the crab itself

Seriously? Even the fact that they were all facing the wrong way? :P

The only thing I thought of today Moon that I'd change is smooth it up. The hard edge wouldn't last for long in their environment, so I don't think they'd give it one to begin with. could you make the sides... Bulky? Just so that it's smooth and looks a bit more like a sand castle structure. I made another quick repaint:

Is it still doable?

It would make for a great slide, huh? :D I can make some simple stairs for it if you guys want, worth seeing what they look like :)

Earlier in the thread I posted a hut that I made for the town, to be used modularly as villagers homes. Well I've been asked to do two slightly different variations, and this is the second one. Textures are still subject to change at this point, since we made some nice ones to choose from, but this is it right now.

I would maybe consider darkening the indented 'eye' bits to make them stand out more? And I'm not sure the gold really suits.

@alysander, hey that's cool!

@alysander, hey that's cool! I never realised that before :)

@Yixist yeah dont worry the indented parts will be darker, I still have yet to bake in vertex colours. And the gold-looking parts aren't gold, it's just maya's viewport making it look that way :P I put it on 2.0 so you can see the normal detail but it's also totally blown out my spec and gloss. It definitely won't look like that in game :)

@Revada, thanks for that, I'll set about altering it when I get the chance :)

Hey guys, just finished some

Hey guys, just finished some more building clutter- Plas and I thought some stray wood planks would look nice, stacked next to buildings, as make-shift walkways/blockades for damaged architecture, as broken bits of crate, or just generally laying about for whatever purpose (for which wood has many of). Here are 3 for now, I may make a couple more but for now I'm hoping they'll be modular enough.

Blessings of the Nine!!

Blessings of the Nine!!

I've started work on the Ald'ruhn temple (may even be the temple for all the towns but that's yet to be decided). In terms of design I've gone for a mix of MK's original concept and the simpler one that made it into Morrowind. There's still LOADS to be done with this so don't fret (railings, windows, re-shaping etc etc etc...), I just thought you might like to see it as is.

Edit: I thought it might be nice to have a little lecturn (that little bendy thing on top of the building) so that townsfolk could gather around the base of the temple while a Priest hosted morning/evening prayers, or they might chant or some crap I dunno...

This week on Skywind Cribs...

This week on Skywind Cribs....

Done some more on the temple. Added Plas's windows and made banisters for the veranda (is that the right word... anyways,) also tampered with the arch shapes, curved them up a bit. Also put in the entrance to the veranda, located in the middle of the floor in the style of a trap door (which is a very lackluster temp model at the moment, I don't know who's in charge of modelling those). its got a curvy slope thing that leads down to it. I've got further plans for the little roof-like thing over the top of it, which you'll see soon. There's a couple of small bits left to model but I don't wish to add too much more for fear of over-cluttering it. However if anyone has any ideas for other things to add, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks for the visual reference sasquatch, I'll revisit the platform soon :)

For now, more temple shenanigans. Thought some strung up lanterns might look nice on the veranda and I've added some canopies on the sides with urns underneath them (dunno who's in charge of urns so I just roughed out some quick ones). I figure it'd be a nice place for a healer to sell potions or something. Saves sick people from entering the temple and potentially infecting the priests or worshippers. Gonna set to Uving and start thinking about what to do for texturing, I'm open to suggestions. :)

I'll make sure everything is properly organised for those guys :) Also, about the collision- I'm not sure how to do that yet, but if someone wants to teach me I'm willing to learn :D

Started texturing the temple- The texture on the tarpaulins is temporary until I can find where Plas's got to... oh and the banners are also temporary, I'll be making the texture for those soon (also altered the style of them, thought it would make sense to have them pitched to the floor to stop them flapping about in storms). So yeah, in short, lots more to be done!

This should not be used,

This should not be used, especially in Ald'ruhn which is prone to sandstorms.  The wall on the exterior of the temple is a protective barrier for severe weather.  If you wish to expand the temple exterior, which I think would be a mistake, it would be better to turn this into a temple complex enclosed behind an enlarged exterior wall or dug into the ground.  The exterior area could be similar to a peristyle, in Redoran architectural form, with shops and storage around the periphery.  A pit, possibly with a second entrance to a lower level of the temple interior, a couple stalls for a healer or enchanter and temple offering peddler.  The current design is impractical and doesn't follow the four recommended guidelines I posted earlier.  Now I realize these attached images are from Star Wars, but I think we could use something like this for the temple exterior.

A temple compound roughly

A temple compound roughly like this would provide Ald'ruhn an exterior commons and marketplace sheltered from the ashstorms.  This would expand the temple exterior, add character and serve an important purpose for the city while preserving the original structure.  Such an area could also include a deep well in the center for travelers to draw water from to make it an even more important hub of activity.

The temple could also stay as it is.  I think its important to note that, to my knowledge, all the small temple exteriors were the same in Morrowind.

Ok before the latest update I

Ok before the latest update I'm gonna quickly clarify some stuff :)

Sas- you've made a lot of great points and I thank you for them, I like the ideas you've put forward about a temple complex- the sheltered parts on the sides can stay as storage areas, I think I could build a little market place type structure on the back of the temple based on the visual material you've given me.

The roof area is accessed from inside the temple, in the middle of the gazebo is a spiral staircase that leads down to a door where people can get in and out.

I like the idea of a cloth roof, all that concerns me is the sturdiness of it- even if its secured well, repeated ash storms could eventually lead to it tearing away from the structure and flying over red mountain like a tesco bag in a car park. But I do like the idea so I'll try to think of a way to incorporate it somehow.

Without further ado I've done more texturing, not much to go now (discounting the temp ones I mentioned earlier on, they still need changing). I'm not overly sure about the textures on the gazebo part yet, I like them but I also can't help but feel like they're a little too much. I felt like the crab shape texture might add a little something but I dunno. I'd like to hear what people think :)

I think the comment about the

I think the comments about the ash storms of Ald-ruhn interfering with such a design as that temple are valid, but it looks too snazzy not to use.  It would certainly work for Gnisis.  Same architectural style and influence without the constant inclement weather.

The temple at Gnisis is also home to the sacred Ash Mask of Vivec, which you could 'display' in that gazebo.  (The mask on public display even in Vanilla Morrowind is a fake, the true mask is hidden from public view in a secret location within the same temple complex).

As much as I hate to do that,

As much as I hate to do that, I must agree here. I think this temple would look awesome in Gnisis, which is a great looking Redoran town (not too long ago there was a batch of great looking screenshots, and this would fit right in, especially with all the lanterns). Open for the priests to preach from, and display some relics.

But for Ald'Ruhn this seems too open. It would be a hell maintaining it. I love the looks, but classic enclosed temple would work best for this Ashstorm ridden place... Perhaps we could reach a design compromise somehow, I'll look into it.
