Missing meshes / incomplete installation?

Submitted by suckerpunch on

Thanks in advance for your help. The amount of work that's gone into this mod is stunning and inspiring.

I've completed the installation for Morroblivion and the game itself is running fine. However, one of the enemy NPCs in the first cave (Mulvisie Othril in Addamasartus) is standing inside a giant yellow diamond with an exclamation point on it, which I've read means that the game cannot find a mesh or texture that applies to the NPC. I have not gone past Sedya Neen or Addamasartus to see how many other yellow diamond errors I get. (I believe it will be many. See below.)

First, here's the list of files that I've used during install, in the order that I installed them in. I used BOSS to initially change the order, and I've been changing modified-by dates manually when I wanted to try something out. Even though I'm new to installing mods, I've found the installation procedure to be straightforward.

Second, here's my incredibly long text detailing what I've done so far to determine the cause of my problem :

In order to see what meshes were missing, I downloaded the TES Construction Set. I've never used it before, so I may be misinterpreting what it's telling me, but it does look like I'm missing weapons/ammo meshes and textures.

When I load Morrowind_ob.esm in it and head to Mulvisie Othril's record (Cell view, World Space : Interiors, Addamasartus, 0MulvisieSOthril) I get the following messagebox : Model Load Error : in Weapons\Bone\Arrow.nif. (I assume marker_error.nif, which is used instead, is the yellow diamond.) Continuing forward, I get another messagebox : Could not find parent node extra data for 'BASE Weapons\Bone\Arrow.nif'. I cannot find any subdirectory with the form 'Weapons\Bone' anywhere in my Oblivion/Data directory or in any installation file I've downloaded. Mulvisie Othril does not show up in the preview window. His compatriots load with no errors and appear in the preview window.

In Mulvisie Othril's inventory, I find a record for 0AAMWArrowChitin. This appears to the the same as 0AAMWArrowChitin in the Object Window (Items, Ammo, Weapons, Bone). Double-clicking here gives me the messagebox : Icon file Textures\Menus\Icons\Weapons\BoneQuiver.dds not found. Moving forward, I see that the mesh and texture files are Weapons\Bone\Arrow.nif and Weapons\BoneQuiver.dds, which I cannot find anywhere.

Jumping around through the Object Window's weapons list, I see that many weapons load with no messageboxes, and in all of those cases, I can find the associated mesh and texture file listed. So far, I've seen that DarkSeducer, Jyygylag, and Madness weapons all load with errors, and in those cases, I cannot find either the mesh, texture, or icon. There are probably many more missing files but I have stopped looking.

Since then, I've assumed that I've just forgotten an installation file that contains all of those meshes and textures, but for the life of me, I can't find it. Alternately, I've seriously screwed up the installation at some point and haven't realized it.

I hope the above was clear. Again, thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like there is a problem with your installation, probably Vvardenfell Imports...  Try reinstalling.

I've tried reinstalling Vvardenfell Imports and had no luck. I've also tried looking for the missing mesh and texture files in the installation files and could not find them.

I'm assuming that, on a correct install, there is actually a file at Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Weapons\Bone\Arrow.nif. Is that true? If so, I just have to find out what installation file contains it, download that, and install it. If not... well, I'll restore Oblivion to the backup and run through the entire installation procedure again.

Try installing with Bash instead of just copying the files.  I know the installation videos are long, but if you're new to installing mods (which you say you are) it might be worth watching them and following along...

The Wrye Bash mod checker reminded me that Shivering Isles is required for Vvardenfell Imports.

Well, at least I installed everything correctly. One checkmark later, everything works (outside of the nVidia solid-color bug on interior cells, but there's enough help out there for that). Thank you.

One more note :

I've solved my grey screen problem by setting iActorShadowCountInt to 0 in my INI file.

Apologies if this is already known. If not, here's more detail :

I was having issues with what was referred to as the 'gray screen bug' on other mod forums. It's not like the nVidia black screen bug that's been mentioned. Here's the rundown of the issue : in interior cells, when I look in certain directions, the screen would show a flat color. (For me, it was either turquoise or brown.) I could move out of the way and have my graphics restored. I could look somewhere else and have graphics restored. I could switch to third-person view, and then my view is restored, and I never see the error. I think I've seen it referred to here as a turquoise screen bug, and other people have mentioned it. The most helpful thread was here : http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/71118-gray-screen/

Changing HDR lighting to Bloom or none did nothing. Changing any other setting did nothing. I can reliably trigger the bug by setting iActorShadowCountInt to any number greater than zero. I have not found another setting that can trigger the bug, but I haven't tested everything. I am currently running in stock Ultra-High Graphics mode with just that one setting changed, so I have HDR enabled.

Well actually I have that error, but it is too minor for me to search a fix. Thank you for telling me that.

Did changing iActorShadowCountInt solve your problem?
