Installer does not run

Submitted by stegas42 on

Hello

I have been trying to install Morroblivion and I get to the point where I unpack the Morrowind_ob Version 026 application file which is supposed to verify if I actually own Oblivion, Morrowind and the relavent expansions (which I do).  When I try to run this file (which I have now tried many times) either nothing happens, or I get a pop-up to tell me the program is not working, or a pop-up to tell me it may be installed wrong.

So is there a step where I was supposed to do something to that file before running it, is something else wrong.  If you need more info on what I have done I can gladly post it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you want help, you're going to have to post more information:

What version of Windows are you running?  Is it native or on a Mac or virtualised environment?

Have you tried re-downloading the file?

What do the pop-ups SAY?  Have you typed this in to google?

I am running windows 7 on a windows machine (thinkpad)

I have redownloaded the file several times and have tried running it on both the computer and through my external harddrive.

Since my last post I have only been able to get one of the two pop-ups to appear, Its text is

Program Compatibility Assistant
This program might not have installed correctly
if this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling using setting that are compatible with this version of windows

(info on program)

(two button options: this program installed correctly or reinstall using recommended settings)

I have tried both of those buttons and nither appears to do anything.

thanks again

What do you mean "one of the two popups?" There are no popups. The dialog boxes you are referring to are from Windows, not the Installer. There is one window with two fields, one for Morrowind, one for Oblivion. Try running as an Administrator. If you have installed Oblivion to it's default location you won't be able to do anything. You'll need to uninstall Oblivion and reinstall to a neutral location like c:\games\oblivion. This is in my Installation Instructions.

I appologize Dialog box (I did not mean anything by pop-up other then that it was a window that popped up), anyway I never get any window of any kind from the installer itself.

I have tried the run as administrator option, it appears to do nothing.

As to where the games are installed I have them through steam so they are where steam places them, which I do not seem to be able to alter, but which is also not the place you said not to have them.  Anyway since the installer has never asked me about them it seems unlikely this would be my problem.

If you have pirated the games then the installer will not work.

I do remember getting the message

"Program Compatibility Assistant This program might not have installed correctly
if this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling using setting that are compatible with this version of windows"

I just assumed that what really happened was Windows 7 expected like an actual install with registry changes, and when that didn't happen, the message came up.  As long as you have the esp file, this message is ok.

First my copies are not pirated I purchased them through steam.

Second the program never runs so I don't get the esp file.

Anyway This is no longer a problem for me as a friend ran the installer on his computer and gave me the file.  The game works beutifully now.

Thanks to everyone who helped in its creation.

Hi:)

Im having this exact same problem. I recently bought a brand spanking new rig and it came with windows 7. But when i try and run the installer for v32 it tells me I am missing a version of .NET framework (4 point something). I tried running the installer in compatibility mode for windows xp service pack 2 and 3, but no luck. I also tried running as an administrator with no result. I definitely do NOT have pirated software of any kind. I then tried doing what the person in this thread suggested, using a friends computer. But that isnt a good solution because they have to have all the games installed AND when I tried the installer on his computer it still didnt work. He has Windows XP 32 but it came up with the same error message about .NET missing. Whats going on? I would like to update Morroblivion and keep it current but I cant run the installer??:( I had no problems with the previous installers but then again this is a new computer.

Please advise,

Sara ;)

Download the most recent version of .net, either from microsoft's website or through windows update in the lower right hand corner of your win 7 start menu Sent from my phone ;-)

@thermador: thanks for the reply! :) It's always a good idea for any new Morroblivion user, or anyone really, to have the latest updates to Windows installed. For this particular issue, I ran update, but the last .NET listed was framework 3.5. I of course rebooted and checked again, but after three or four tries .NET 4 still didnt appear in the update list. So i just went here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263.aspx

In case anyone else is having this similar issue and doesnt see the .NET 4.0 framework listed or if after updating your installer still doesnt work try this direct download and installation from the Microsoft website. It worked for me :)

I used to do Windows XP/MCE/X64/Vista tech support for Microsoft. The .Net Framework used to be a major source of issues (installers corrupting, or .Net half installing and you couldn't remove it or put it back in properly, among other issues).

That being said, Windows XP does not ship with .Net included and you had to install it for any programs written using .Net Framework to work. Windows Vista shipped with .Net 3.0 and Windows 7 ships with .Net 3.5, so anyone wanting to run the Morroblivion installer will need to download and install .Net 4.0 (& I recommend running Windows Update after installing to get any service packs/patches).

The current download link from Microsoft is:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7&displaylang=en

and is the same thing you would get using the link saraam posted for the MSDN site.

Edit: by the way, the link I posted is for the English version of .Net 4, but you can select other languages using the drop down menu on the page :)

I think the admin of this site should post that net framework download link up on the download section under the morroblivion dl of this site so anybody with old versions can download it. (Easy access)
