[RELz] Molag Amur Region

Submitted by SquallyDaBeanz on

So, I'm currently working on the Molag Amur Region, and I wanted to get some public opinions before I start getting too crazy.

First off, due to Morrowinds design, it'd be hard to make a really detailed landscape without changing a lot of things. Before, Molag Amur consisted of a lot of rolling hills and rocks. It's difficult to make every hill or mountain that was climbable in Morrowind still be in Skywind due to the mountainous pieces and need for detail. Because of this, I wanted to create my own "sub-regions" in the area. For example, a boring set of hills could be turned into a Cliffracer nesting peninsula or an Ashlander bandit camp/fort. It would stray from the original, but the design needs to be updated with small areas to explore to keep it interesting. So, instead of just covering the hills with rocks and cliffs, generally keeping the same shape, I add new areas to discover. Of course, none of these are completed yet, and the first picture of each isn't detailed. Here's an example.

Finally cracked (pun intended) a lava crust rock. This is not glow mapped textures, this is actually a subsurface glowing effect under alpha rock mesh, so it pulsates and glows under the crust...this is what I wanted!

Hey, just here with another update for anyone who cares.

Work on the region has been coming along, but a lot slower than before. I've gotten a few new assets to use and I'm working hard to make it look at good as I can for you guys. Besides that, I'm frankly just burnt out (pun intended) on working on the region right now, so fresh ideas and assets to use are VERY welcomed. It will get finished though, I promise :D the work I have so far has been added in V0.7 so I hope you guys check it out and like it. Be sure to tell me what you think.

Anyhow, I will be gone until the 28th, so won't get a whole lot done this week. Other than that though, I'm very impressed with all the work that has been going on in this project, and it's very excited to see it coming along. Also, a huge thanks to Happychappy and everyone else who has helped me learn the tools of the trade and share their resources with me. I'm proud to be part of this team and I hope you guys are having as much fun as I am with it!

I'll post another update when I get back, as well as a few new screenshots when I get the chance. Thanks!

Update: Again, work is slowly coming along. School is in again, and a lot has been happening. Just wanted to let everyone know I'm still alive and kickin' however. I've made a regularly scheduled time to take out of my day to work on this, and so hopefully the pace will pick up again! Thank you to everyone for the support.

I like to think of all these marvelous landscaping as works of art. Michelangelo carved his statues from marble, but I like to think we are doing the same, its just that ours is a bit more virtual. But none the less masterpieces :)

Finally had a run around Molag Amur with 0.8.2 and looking great as usually. Lots of little things to discover.

Finally added those ash grasses Squally! I've set each different one to the cracked earth land texture and also one mixed set. Also I've added one of the grass as a plant so that can be placed anywhere. Still my mission to go through more resources so we can find lots of appropriate surface rubble (which can be applied as grass for convenience). Probably some barren looking grass, twigs and small rocks. Just have to experiment with some looks :)

Well, no grass pics, but got some nice volcanic glass rocks. These look better in game, because they reflect with movement, so you'll just have to trust me that they look good. Also my res is set to medium textures, so should be crispier for most.

Classic obsidian, sort of matte and reflective at the same time, with a smooth face.

A more nodular obsidian, with a more glass finish. This is much more reflective and makes a huge difference if near a light source as it shows colour of that light.

Tachylite (also spelled tachylyte), a basaltic glass with relatively low silica content.

Same rock but other side, which shows you how much lighting effects how the rocks look, which is fantastic really. Same rock never looks the same depending on weather and even angle looking at it :)

Finally Volcanic glass in the making

I have began daily work on this region once again since the update, and i'm glad to announce it's looking better than ever. Thanks to a complete retexture and facelift, as well as some new assets from Happychappy, it's nearing completion. I still have some large areas to do, but mostly now it's just polishing ground textures and adding details. Thanks everyone for your continued support! Most of my latest work has been merged in the latest update, so please leave feed back and suggestions. I have also uploaded a video show casing some of the new stuff, so check out the link below.

More updates to come later. Keep up the good work everyone.

What could I do to help, Squally?

I don't know why any children would be running around a volcanic, mountainous region... unless they were helpless pray inside a cliffracer nest >:)

Always a fun idea for a side quest, I don't like how every time you ask if there is any work to be done its always bandits, I like the idea of rescuing children

So I was experimenting with weather today, and by the grace of the Divines I just so happened to try out a certain weather type called SkyrimOvercastWar, the civil war weather I guess ('fw d299e' for those who want to try it ingame). It was random, probably divine inspiration of some sort. This was the result:

Morning. Also my favorite. Maybe we can tweak it to be more of this color permenently.

Suffice it to say, I have already changed the weather to this (and made the last image my wallpaper). Let me know what you guys think about this!

Damn, that might possibly be the most convincing atmospheric piece I've seen during the whole of this development process, at least, as far as landscapes go. It's amazing how far something small like that can carry the overall aesthetic appeal. What other weather/atmospheric settings do you folks have in mind for the other regions?

Resurrecting this post for a 4th time to let everyone that, yes, I am, once again, working on Molag Amur, this time with new assets and lots of love. I'm unsure if I'll continue this region or pass it off at some point. Anyways, here are a few screenshots.

Due to all the CTDs in the area, most have to be taken in the Creation Kit. I'll add more as I go along
