Thieves Guild - Gloves of Bal Molagmer

Submitted by halaali on

If you talk to Jim Stancey without wearing the Gloves he will continue giving you a new pair each time you ask him about Bal Molagmer. If you are wearing the gloves he will tell you to put on the gloves so people can tell you're one of the good people. He won't tell you about the Hlervu Locket and the amulet cannot be found and therefore the quest does not advance.

I'm sorry, but I do not know the quest line inside and out; the Queen of the Ashlands did it, not me. So, I have no idea what quest you are talking about, let alone what gloves. None of the quests listed on the Wiki leapt out at me saying "I need goves." So be specific. Give me enough details to work with.

This is covered here, it's kind of a weird questline, random "Robin Hood" quests:

Questline: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Bal_Molagmer

In the CS, go to the VivecVSSimineSFralinieXSBookseller cell, then edit NPC 0Stacey and then look at his dialogue.  The topic is 1BalSMolagmer.

The specific dialogue that has the result script player.additem fbmwglovesofthebalmolagmer 1 is the response to Bal Molagmer that has 5 responses. It also does setstage fbmwtgssgenerosity1 1, and when you look at this quest, it is indeed the proper quest (the first Bal Molagmer quest), The Hlervu Locket.  I'm not sure how to fix the repeated topic though... maybe set it to "Say Once?"

Thank you Thermador. The Queen of the Ashlands never really finished these nor devoted much time to them. According to her Quest Notes: "Some of the Bal Molagmer quests may work, but they have not been thoroughly tested." At least you have given me something to go on. However, I am not going to jump right into this. At some point I'm sure I will debug it; but no promises when.

I just put together a patch to fix this issue, but I haven't tested it thoroughly.  If you want, I can upload it once I've had the opportunity to make sure it works properly.

(I hope it's okay for a newb to the project like me to jump right in like this.  I'm just doing this stuff to improve my own game experience, and figured I might as well share.)

Yes, please. Thank you for the help. It will probably be weeks or months before I get to these.

Thought I'd give you an update--I'm finding more bugs with the Bal Molagmer quest chain. Is it more helpful if I fix as many of them as I can and then give you the patch, or get you what I have so far immediately?

It looks like I will probably be holding off until Saturday for a release; there are more icons on the way and they are definitely worth waiting a day or two for. So, please send me what you have finished by Friday evening.

Certainly! I'll be out of town Friday evening, so I'll post a link and patch notes on Friday morning.

I haven't been posting new Bal Molagmer bugs, since right now nobody else can start the quest chain.  In the future, would you like me to do bug reports on things other players can access, or should I just post a patch with my fixes (and notes on the patch) at regular intervals?  Either way, I'll certainly comment on any bugs that other users post if I have a fix for it.

If you can do patches, then please do so. If you post a bug report and wait for me to get to it, then it might be... a while!

I think I need to take a short break from bug fixing (too much overtime at work!!) for sanity's sake, but here are my fixes for the Bal Molagmer questline.  With this patch, I was able to complete all of the quests, but many of these have alternative routes that I didn't test (for instance, in several of them you can choose to double-cross the Bal Molagmer).

Additionally, this fixes a bug in which Gentleman Jim Stacey won't offer his first Thieves Guild quest if you're already above the rank of Captain.  I haven't tested the quests themselves, but hopefully they're in better shape than Bal Molagmer, since the latter seems to have been completely untested (understandable, given the size of this project).  Finally, I included the fix for the Sleepers Awake quest, but that probably doesn't matter since I believe David already fixed it.

If I encounter any other game-breaking bugs in the Thieves Guild, I'll try to patch them up...but not in time for this weekend's patch. Sorry about that.

[ADDENDUM]

I just realized that my patch notes are incomplete. Here is the section I missed:

BAL MOLAGMER: BRALLION'S RING (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Brallion%27s_Ring)
- Added Brallion's Exquisite Ring (fbmwExquisiteRingBrallion) to NPC Brallion (0brallion).
* Note: I did not touch Brallion's AI. The quest is functional, but he does not go to the tavern as he does in Morrowind.

BAL MOLAGMER: BOOKS FOR VALA (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Books_for_Vala)
- Talking to Stacey about "History books" when accepting the quest will now set the quest stage to 10, allowing you to progress.

This is Wonderful! Thank you! This will be included in the next release, v027 sometime this weekend.
