DARK ELF VOICE AUDITIONS

Submitted by Smitehammer on

This is where you can upload your Dark Elf (Dunmer) voice auditions.  Please keep this thread only for auditions - feedback and other comments relating to voice work can be posted in the hub.

SAMPLE LINES

I have long believed it was a mistake to turn from the old gods. Perhaps Azura is with you after all. And perhaps not. I will tell you that I've spoken with Dagoth Ur. He promised me the same thing. That he will drive the foreigners from our lands. But I am not one to ignore opportunity, nor am I one to be troubled by rubbing two sides of a coin. If you are one of your word, I am your ally. I will tell Velanda Omani and Nevena Ules to support you as Hortator of House Hlaalu.       VOICE INFORMATION

In general, Dunmer should sound wise, even in their youth.  They live in a harsh land, and their lifespans are very long - they are a pragmatic people and venerate the wisdom of their elders from even from a young age.  They should speak in a precise manner, taking the time to think through exactly what they mean to say as they say it.

For female Dunmer, the most important thing to consider is the culture they're coming from.  Female members of House Hlaalu are the most heavily influenced by Imperial (and therefore Aldmeri) influence.  They could very well speak with a lilt of the Imperial nobles, to a degree, though their voices won't be as commanding or crisp as either the Imperials or the Altmer.  The old voice for the Altmer would have made a great Hlaalu Dunmer.

Female Redoran Dunmer do not need the British lilt.  The Redoran should sound proud, and stalwart.  A mature-voiced and not necessarily as crisp version of the more American imperials could work - think 'superhero'.

Telvanni Dunmer females would seem suspicious and cold.

Ashlander females need to crank up the elderly wisdom vibe to 11.  Depending on how good they are with Cyrodilic (English) their accent may even sound Dothraki or Mongolian.

For males, the rasp is the most important thing.  If you can throat sing, and apply this rasp on top of throat singing, that is the ideal Dunmer voice.  That's how Jeff Baker does the voice.  After you nail the sound you can think on the cultural influences.

Hi, I'm new to voice acting and I wanted to try the voice for Angaredhel. I know the quality isn't the best right now but if I managed to get confirmed for this role or multiple I'll buy a brand new mic and pop filter ASAP! Feedback always welcome.

Here is my audition for a Dark Elf! I decided to use the very memorable dialogue from Jiub right when you start the game on the ship! Hope you like it.

The rasp is pretty good and consistent, but the rhotic R makes you sound distinctly North American; though you don't need to affect a British accent, have your Rs follow their style to avoid the North American accent.

The audio should be cleaned up according to Langotriel's tutorial.

Lastly, the raspiness is lost and your real voice bleeds through more as you get higher in pitch, so try to stay lower as you read.

This is quite good, actually.  Are you able to throat sing?  It almost seems as though you are using the same technique Jeff Baker, Dragomir and I use for Dunmer.  The only thing I would ask is that for actual recordings you edit out breaths taken, and that you make sure you can do this voice without running out of breath too fast, as most of the lines aren't as short ad those you've just read for.

Hi all, I'm Ketan. This is my first submission for Dunmer voice, doing part of the admin sample.

The voice may be good, but it's hard to tell with the echo and unclean audio.

This voice seems a bit forced.  The voice should sound natural, not like a raspy overlay of your normal voice.

Your own voice should come through as little as possible.  Throat singing in the parts where you can not keep up the rasp is ideal, but if you can not do that just keeping your voice low when there is no rasp is usually enough.

You are good at leeping your real voice from bleeding through, but it's a bit breathy and soft.  There should be a bit of voice underlying the voice to give you some emotive power.  I know, it's a bit of a tightrope performance to balance between too little and too much voice.

I hadn't heard of throat singing before, so I had to youtube it. I'm not exactly sure to be honest, I may be able to, I gave it a try and it sounded pretty close haha! It's probably since I can use that technique with my throat you mentioned that Jeff Baker used. But yes I'll definitely edit out any intake breaths in between. I can do this voice fine! It's just like speaking in my normal voice for me so running out of breath isn't a worry.

My Dark-Elf audition. The pronunciations might be a bit off, my apologies on that. And hopefully the sound quality is good enough for you. Thanks again.

Cool! Thanks for the feedback Smitehammer. I have prepared a few different attempts for you to see if I can hit what you're looking for.

This is an experimental version of Athyn Sarethi. I did it two different ways back and forth. I know I pronounced it whore-tator... Ravanna reminded me it was not correct. My voice can't take much more tonight but I'll gladly re-do it if you'd like!

And this is my Divayth Fyr, and I tried to emulate Type 1 (from Athyn) with more emotion.

I did another recording, this time I did one of the Balmora guards lines.

Ahoy,

This is, to me, not a great subscription at points. Though I was told to try anyway. Is just the sample lines, some parts I retried.

I randomly said "Wealth beyond measure, Outlander" in a Skype call during a gaming session with some friends one time, and they all said I did a pretty good Morrowind style Dunmer, so I thought, eh, what the heck. I'll give this a go.

Here's my audition, using the sample. This is the most 'natural' deep throaty voice for me to do, but I could probably manage some variations if it doesn't fit.

Edit: Got some good feedback in the chat. I'll try to get a more substantive throat-singy sort of thing uploaded later.

Here is my second recording for Angaredhel with my new microphone. I lost my voice a bit before this recording but my throat should feel better in a few days. Feedback welcome of course.

A bit quiet but you get the idea. I can do variations on this voice.

Sorry about the pronunciation... Never played the games.

Also I can access better recording equipment if need be.

This is my crack at Dark Elf. I've got this feeling there might not be enough voice and too much rasp. To be honest I just rolled with it, but I can easily rectify it if it's what your looking for [External image].

- Mitch

Edit: Please still check this out, but just as a side note I realized this isn't compressed properly if at all and noise reduction is non existent if that is audible to anybody else (it really shouldn't be). I used reaper to record this and I'm still finding my way around the interface and the pre packaged vst's. I'll try this again at some point to bring the quality up a notch, I may even just stick to audacity for the time being.
