Skywind - Official Development Video #3 Announcment

It's that time again! I want to get started on the third (and hopefully final) installment of the Skywind developer diary series.

It may not seem like a big deal, but this is the kind of thing that attracts attention, helps get volunteers, supports the project, and looks good on a resume ;) Anyone who has or is making a WORTHWHILE contribution, I want to see your work. The more material I get, the better it will be.

I'll just make this clear now: No footage, no video. The last one was very painful to make and I spent a lot of time tracking down artists for footage and other things. I don't want to do that again. If you have ANY saved footage of your work or something to show, I want it. Here is a small list off the top of my head:

- Custom animations

- Skeleton rigging

- concept speed paint

- 3D modeling

- voice acting demo/implementing

- music recording/software

- Creation Kit cluttering/level design

- Quest implementation/scripting

Eham, any footage you can show of animations/rigging/skeletons, all that stuff you do can be shown and sped up. I will also make an announcment in the video.

I want to get this released in 1-2 months if possible. Or sooner if we get enough material before then, but it's up to how my schedule is. For now, continue to send in submissions!

There was a big dialog

There was a big dialog writing project over the summer that added over 7000 new lines to the game, so it might be nice to mention that. Although, writing is difficult to showcase in video form, so maybe it would only make sense combined with voice acting segments.

I asked Langotriel to record

I asked Langotriel to record some footage of the new lines/existing lines in the excel for something to speak over for VA he will hopefully get around to it in the next week or two. Announcements: about 10,000 new lines of content to be added. Recording to begin in december so check back then (Christmas break would be a perfect time for a lot of people to record perhaps). Maybe ping Smitehammer directly though

I have animation footage it's just in a different format and I don't have a utility for converting video installed that will do 3 gigs. Once I acquire one I'll upload the data somewhere and send it to you.

EDIT: I'll be throwing you 2 videos of hunger animation, and probably one of spears and silt strider. So you're gonna have a good 4-6 hours of footage to pick from.

I know from experience that many formats/codecs do not play well with editing software, and some capture utilities have the tendency to output delivery formats like mp4 that are a pain to work with.

Actually showing building interiors being done is quite inspirational. Shows the project for the scope it is. People need to see that EVERYTHING is being redone and can help.

Squally: I imagine it will be only like 20 seconds, but would be good to put in the dialog along the lines of "there are lots of building interiors that need 3d modelers to help create. Please if you can spare a few hours a week to progress the project..."

Here is a link to three videos of me uv mapping an interior. One plays at normal speed, and the others at x2 speed. All are encoded with the Lagarith Lossless Codec (avi), and I can confirm that they work correctly at least with Adobe Premiere. Size is 1280x720.

I have talked to several of you about footage already, but I'm going to put the reminder here anyways. I am severely lacking footage for many sections and struggling to find useable material in game. I DON'T want hours of footage. If you record yourself doing a process, please cut it down to a few minutes of interesting footage if possible. I've already submitted the script, so I encourage anyone contributing to this to look over their narration section and submit any footage you think would fit with it.

EDIT: This script is already submitted for recording. It can't be changed now, sorry! If there is misinformation, it'll just have to be cleared with the individual volunteers. I didn't have a lot of info to go off in the first place. Again, I apologize.

So again, here is what I need:

LANDSCAPING:

Good here. I can get all the in game footage and CK work. If you have a few minutes of CK work I can speed up, send it in, if not, don't go out of your way

CONCEPT ART:

Good for this section too. I got footage from Deviant Art and other sources.

SCRIPTING:

Any items in game that have scripted events or animations. Any custom scripts, Creation Kit work, etc. I have 0 footage for this section.

ANIMATIONS FOOTAGE:

I got the Hunger footage, but I want to see that sexy silt strider and anything else. I also want to see the process and footage of the programs used. Really anything to show while the narrator talks. It doesn't have to be substantial. Showing full custom animations and sequences is preferable. Different angles, etc.

VOICE ACTING:

Live recordings, scripts, spread sheets, anything. A sample of a voiced NPC in game would be helpful too. I have no footage for this section yet

3D MODELING:

I'm good here with speed-up modeling. Turn tables of various models would be extremely nice though. Send those in to me!

MUSIC:

Speed up of someone making a composition or two. Various programs used, etc. I have almost 0 footage for this section.

SOUND EFFECTS:

This one is obvious hard to show visually. I ripped some footage from YouTube of the nixhound and clannfear. I'm going to get a few shots from JP's streams, but I still need more. So again, anything showing the programs, sound waves/equalizers, etc.

You mentioned scripts for the voice acting section. Something that might be interesting is for someone to capture footage of themselves typing up lines, which illustrates the writing part pretty well, and with more action (such as it is) than screenshots alone. I could get some shots of myself typing lines from one of my idle banter scripts, if you're interested.

Please please do it on an old fashioned typewriter. Extra points if you look like you're from the 1940s and do an 'internal monologue' of the lines as you type.

Time for the not-so-nice post about footage. I NEED MORE OF IT

I still have VOICE ACTING, SCRIPTING, AND ANIMATIONS to do. I have received only 1-2 clips for each segment, and it looks awful. Please please PLEASE, if you are in one of these departments, send me everything you can. Contact me with any questions

Additionally, I am still lacking some footage for MUSIC and SOUND EFFECTS. Both sections are mostly done, but I need a few more shots to spice it up.

I know these are all difficult sections to do, as there isn't much to show visually, but if you guys want more help in these departments, I suggest going out of your way and recording a few more things.

Off the top of my head, here's a few shots I think would be nice

Music:

- Anyone using a live instrument. Doesn't matter what

- Sheet music, lyrics, notes, anything

Sound effects:

- Any in game creatures

- Comparison sounds with Morrowinds

Voice Acting

- Live recording of voice acting

- Lines being implemented in the CK, NPC dialog trees

- Sample of a voiced NPC in game

- Anything else you can think of. Got to get creative here.

Scripting:

- Work in papyrus

- Custom script working in game

- Any creation kit work

- Anything that remotely has to do with scripting

ANIMATIONS: (I know you're a busy guy, but all eyes are on you Aleh)

- Silt strider (in game and out if possible)

- Vanilla Skyrim character rig moving

- Underwater combat (if possible. I know there was a mod with it, but I'm unsure if it was available for download yet)

- Things. Just moving. In game. It doesn't have to be custom. Anything you can think of here.

For the sections listed above, I need around 10 different clips each MINIMUM. It's a challenge, but doable. I can only do so much from my position.

So again, unless I get this footage, we're looking at a very short and very boring video that will fail in reaching out to other talented modders. If you want help in your department, make this investment please.

I want to have this video done in ONE WEEK. My time will be very limited here soon.

On a side note, let's prepare the website for volunteers. It's doubtful it will be even close to the same amount as it has before, but be prepared anyways. Just because we get new volunteers, doesn't mean you can take a break and relax while they do the grunt work (this is incredibly hypocritical because I will be gone shortly after the release for holidays, and moving out to start school.)

Stick around and be as vocal and helpful as possible. Pick the talent out of the rabble and it'll pay off in the end.
