Suddenly gone wrong

Submitted by digital_trucker on

I installed Morroblivion on an Asus ROG laptop running Windows 8.1...a real beast, no problems with sub-par hardware.  I was in Morrobliss for several days until all of a sudden the game lags horribly in every way.  Enormously long loading time just to get to the main menu, and FPS down to 7 inside.  I changed nothing, all I did was shut the game down and restart it a few hours later.  If I disable the Morroblivion stuff everything goes back to normal, and if I play a character on the Oblivion side WITH the Morroblivion stuff activated everything is normal....it's just when I'm in Morroblivion that everything is all loused up.  I've tried the stutter remover, the 4GB patch, ini tweaks, everything I can think of to no avail.  As soon as I launch the game I can tell by the very first load screen before the main menu that it's lagging.  Any ideas?

What happens when you start a new game?

The same thing happens.  I've loaded older saves, started new games, cleared out my save folder and started a new game....no soap.  Lag lag lag.  I've even completely uninstalled morroblivion and reinstalled it to no avail.  I've tried taking out the optional esp's, no go.  Actually playing Oblivion is unaffected, though.  I'm absolutely baffled as to why it started doing this.  All I did was the shut the game down and restart it an hour or so later.  About the only thing the only thing I haven't tried is sacrificing cheese to Sheogorath.

okay, try that and see what happens then. Stilton or even cheddar is fine, but he prefers wensleydale.

The ritual is simple:

Lay the cheese out before you, cut into thin little triangles. Sing the song of the wabbajack, whilst dancing the Futterwacken. Then and only then will lord sheo think of presenting himself. Present the cheese and tell him your problem, and he might consider mending your game. If the cheese is to his liking, you wont even wind up as a camel when he's finished.

I've also tried various console commands, including the following:  tai, tdetect, pcb, and tlb

Nothing helps.

Can you post your load order? what happens if you start a new game in Vvardenfell but only with the Morroblivion files activated? There's also the very rare chance that a script is going berserk, you could check which one with this tool. However those logs might be hard to read for a novice. Since you're using a laptop are you using any kind of power savings settings? Check those in the system control panel and your graphic cards driver (Catalyst Control Center or NVidia Control Panel). You should set it to always prefer full power over saving energy. Also, does this happen everywhere? Try entering something like a house or a cave or travel somewhere with only a few things in the area.

You could also try to delete your Oblivion.ini (Documents/My Games/Oblivion) and let Oblivion generate a new one.

Power savings settings aren't a problem; not only am I running on shore power to begin with, but I have everything set to run full-throttle even on battery.  It's happening everywhere, even with a brand-spanking-new character.  I've also deleted the Oblivion.ini and had the game generate a new one. *chuckle*  I'm not exactly a newbie, I played Oblivion for a year before Skyrim came out and have been playing Skyrim since, playing with lots of mods and so forth.  I'm pretty much checked all the usual suspects to no avail.  I'm next going to examine the load order and a few other things.  My Oblivion install is fairly basic, not much in the way of mods...and BOSS says everything is fine.

I'd post the log from RuST, but it doesn't seem to be generating one anywhere.

Something else that's kind of strange.  If I create a new character, Caldera is always mapped and discovered if I open the map as soon a I exit the boat in Seyda Neen.

On a side note; is it permissable to substitute the fish-slapping dance for the futterwacken?  Please say yes.

I don't think the scripts are at fault here. Those would have resulted in a more heart beat style kind of lag anyway. have you tried my other suggestions (going inside, only Morroblivion files activated)? What were the results? Do you you use the Steam version of Oblivion? Did you install OBSE correctly and how do you start the game?

Yes, I've tried all of those things.  It is the Steam version of both games, and Steam is NOT installed in c:\Program files; it's installed on different drive entirely (an SSD drive, in fact).  OBSE is installed and functioning properly, no issues there.  I start the game as is normal.  I've resorted to stripping all mods out of BOTH games and verifying the cache through Steam and starting over.  As of now everything is running fine and as expected,  so we'll see what happens.  I suspect I just ran smack into something completely off the wall.  Sometimes weird horker dung just happens.

I also experimented with display settings, ranging from 'very low' to 'ultra high' to 'dialed all the way out to 11'.  Nothing there made any difference whatsoever in framerate, probably because this laptop is way over-spec for these games.   After some looking around I've concluded that the problem had to with the collision boxes in Morroblivion.  This makes a lot of sense to me, since issues with them are well-known, and my problem really became sever when my character was inside at the same time all the NPC's in the Fighters Guild were trying to go to bed simultaneously.  I still suspect something else really strange threw an additional wrench into the works.  Hopefully it won't recur.

Obviously, the collision boxes need to be optimised for the Oblivion engine, no doubt it's on the to-do list :)

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

It's true that some collision objects are not performance friendly but not to this extent. Can you tell us which objects you suspect to cause this problem? I only ever experienced this with Cliffracers flying into interior cells and some candles when they fall over.

In this case, everything fell apart when I went into the Fighter's Guild in Balmora about the time that all the NPC's were trying to go to bed.  FPS fell to 7.  Again, I suspect something else extraordinary happened at the same time as well.  Oblivion is well-known for crashing instead of closing properly.  I use FastExit2 but something may still have gone wrong somewhere and essentially gave the game a stroke.  As of now with it freshly redone from scratch everything seems to be working as expected.  I'm getting roughly half the FPS I usually get in Oblivion, but that also largely depends on which direction I'm looking at any given time.  This is apparently a common issue for Morroblivion from what I've been able to gather from various threads.  The purists will scream bloody murder, but I wonder if it wouldn't be a bad idea to make Morroblivion less Open Cities-ish and install gates and load screens.  The engine would certainly be happier.

I'm in no way going to give up on this, Morroblivion is just too wonderful not to stick with.  Hopefully it was just a random, rare occurence.

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED AND SOLVED.

The problem lay in multiple cores.  I'd wondered about that, but couldn't figure a way to change it permanently in Windows 8.1.  The solution lies in a program called Process Lasso, set core affinity to a single core permanently, and set I/O priority to High permanently.

Load time cut drastically, and FPS has more than doubled on average.

UPDATE:

A further issue has been identified, and it is Windows 8.1 itself.  Apparently DirectDraw emulation is broken in Win8/Win8.1.  Some interesting info in http://www.eightforums.com/gaming/39928-old-games-very-slow-7.html

At least it explains why I get 60 FPS in Skyrim and maybe half that in Oblivion/Morroblivion.  The hunt continues...

Horrible news, folks....after doing a clean reinstall of Oblivion (Steam version) and checking after every step along the way it turns out that a major culprit is OBSE.  I am of course using OBSE 1.2.416 AND I'm using the latest loader.  Using the latest loader helps a little, but doesn't bring it all the way up to speed.  I'm guessing OBSE needs to be updated for windows 8.1

UPDATE:  All issues resolved!  The final key to fixing everything was installing the PROPER directx runtimes.  This is not as easy or obvious as you may think.  For Windows 8.1 and Steam and all such like I have you need the file 'directx_jun2010_redist'.  Any other file or installer won't work.  Get it from Microsoft HERE;  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

I am now getting consistent 29-30 FPS using Oblivion stutter remover, standing in the middle of Balmora.
