[WIP] (North) West Gash Landscaping

Submitted by Tarn IV on

So, this being my first Skywind landscaping endeavor, I feel like I should get some feedback from the general community. The screenshots are of the northern part of the West Gash near the coast. Leave me any suggestions you have.

Well, the images are kind of blurry, probably caused by the ENB settings or the weather, whatever. Anyway, I think you are doing a good job, as a start; needless to say, you have to train the eye, you have to look out for the smallest detail. As a Web Designer (well, more of a Web Developer for the Front-End, but also Designer) it is common knowledge that WHITE SPACE (aka blank space or void space) is probably the most important part of the Design process. You are leaving a lot of white space, which is great, you are actually doing it in a very good way, but you are missing on a lot of detail, which actually counters the fact that you are using white space the way it's supposed to be used. Keep it up, find the detail, build the detail. Create.

:)

A little vague and abstract, but I think I understand what you're saying, and yes the blur was the weather, I couldn't remember the console command for "setweather (number for clear)"

A few new, and (hopefully) improved screenshots:

Updated Arkngtunch-Sturdmumz (had to look that one up) area,

Updated beaches and bandit camps with furniture,

and some work on the road to Gnisis.

[Edit]: It's Arkngthunch-Sturdumz, sorry Dwemer everywhere (I'm looking at you Yagrum)

Looking gorgeous! Natural, not overdone, and I almost forgot how much I love that bridge Ravanna modelled :P

Really well-done environments Tarn, especially loving the road to Gnisis one.Just one tiny thing; In the first picture, the ground right below the rope bridge kinda looks like its jutting out to accommodate its wooden columns.Maybe sprinkle a little bit of grass at the foot of the bridge to sneakily cover it up?:)

Looking forward to more of your stuff!

Been a bit of a slow week in terms of progress, but I have some more to show and hopefully get some feedback on, and sorry for the weird angles, I tried to get as much in one shot as I could, so that I don't have to upload a lot of screenshots.

Good job so far!

I also have a little bit of critique for you,

there is a lot of grass In the last image that you posted, It feels incredibly repeditive due to the  lack of a grass texture on the actual terrain. If a player is on a lower detail setting, they will most likely not see the physical grass.

Try mix it up too, have random dirt patches and blank spots. Throw in some different grass types for some contrast. Take a look at other peoples grass work and see how they have done large open areas. (Sometimes i find that these types of areas are the hardest to get looking good)

Anyway. keep up the good work!

Thanks for the critique, always appreciated. I spent a little time working over it, and came up with this, I hope this fixes the "blank space" problem.

Don't go too heavy on the trees.  I think what he meant was the underlying texture itself should be varied.  That will probably come later, I'm assuming.  Getting rid of the tiling effect by breaking up the pattern with other patterns.

Thanks for the clarification; here's attempt number 3, I added some more shading and texture blending (and got rid of the tree).

Been working more on the area around Gnisis, as well as a little more back around the Dwemer ruin, so here are some screenshots.

I know someone was working on Gnisis but vanished.... wish the work was merged so there wouldn't be conflicts. Unless it was and I didn't notice :|

Is it normal all that green ferns everywhere? Am I alone finding it a bit odd as grass for West gash?

we're gonna need new batches of bushes and grasses varying in colour for all west gash. scumpunx was good at this, he's away atm

The area I am working on is right next to the coast, and I was told it was supposed to be more green than the rest of West Gash. As well as the grass textures I'm using are under the West Gash texture folder, so they're there to be used.

would be nice to have grass version of your red fern (if you are talking about grass).

If that is the case, and it needs to be re-claimed, I would be happy to work on Gnisis while the Hlaalu assets are being prepared for Balmora.

I hope we can at least salvage what was in place, was looking mighty fine.

Iceflame, if you do claim it, we would need to work out a border at which we work on opposite sides of, or wait till I finish the surrounding area, to prevent conflict.

I sent AndyNev a message, trying to get him back to at least give us what he's already done.  We need to stop doing things 5 different times with different people.

So, this is a bit random, but I made a little image comparing the original Morrowind landscape with that of Skywind, and felt like sharing it. The image is of Llervu Ancestral Tomb in West Gash (yes I landscaped it)

Been working some more on the greater Gnisis area this week. I haven't worked much on the actual town, for reasons discussed above, but here's what I got:

I'M NOT DEAD YET!

Sorry for such a long hiatus, I'd prefer not to go into why I was gone so long, but the important thing is that I'm back and can continue working.

Here's just a random little screenshot,

(I still haven't figured out how to do the hidden text thing)
