Single installation package and smaller incremental patches?

Submitted by Anubisan on

First of all, I just want to say that I love what you guys are doing and I have already played many many hours of Morroblivion.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but why not combine all of the different mods into one package so its not such a pain in the rear to install every time there is an update? I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem as long as it was cleared with the authors of all the different mods being used. It would also give the advantage of allowing for small incremental patches that wouldn't require us to re-download everything so often.

What do you think?

I don't know what you mean by different mods or single package. There is the Master, and when other downloads are needed I say so. It is not a pain to reinstall everything if you pay attention to what I tell you that you need to download. Nobody ever reads anything; sometimes I wonder why I bother. I -AM- combining things into one Master. And Yes, this has been discussed before... over and over and over again.

@Anubisan

David is right. This has been brought up a couple times before. This would help installation but not updating. I agree with you, installation is a pain in the butt, and maybe an installer or "package" there would help. Updating is a different thing, and I don't think you can do that there, since we're always adding new files and such. Updating is actually pretty straight forward.

To Update:

  • Download the new ESM and install.
  • Check if David says "A download of Additional Files is required."
  • a. If David says "A download of Additional Files IS required," download them and install.
  • b. If David says "A download of Additional Files IS NOT required," stop here. You're done!

@David

Believe it or not, we're not here just to piss you off. We do read what you say, but like anyone else we make mistakes and sometimes don't read close enough and understand things. This is our mistake most of the time, but that doesn't mean you have to jump down our throats to get your point across.

I would say 99% of the time, when people ask "dumb" questions, they are genuinely just trying to help out or seek advice. Rather then retaliate in frustration, I think the best is to answer tactfully.

In other words, jumping down people's throats will not bring users here, but push them away. I'm not saying don't be direct, just be tact in your answers.

Again, just my two cents.

This question is covered in the FAQ anyway: www.morroblivion.com/faq

Personally, I haven't found Morroblivion any more difficult to install than any other big Oblivion mod.

I have one question. When you re-download a fresh Additional Support Files, can you just copy the contents straight over the old ones, or is it better to restart with a fresh Oblivion data directory?

@jjglvz: Just overwrite the old ones.

@robertneville and @David Budreck:

I also had an installation problem caused by not reading well(and a slight language barier) when I first installed Morroblivion. It sure is hard. But I think about this David is right. Everbody gets eventually bored of answering the same questions. So I think as smaller ranked modders like me and robertneville would be the ones to answer these questions, leaving enough time to do big things for the ones like Hashmi1, eloth, thermador and David.

And yes David we are smaller ranked modders, even if you say we are all equal. We can't compare what we and you did for this project.
