"Compatibility" question.

Submitted by SilvasRuin on

I would like to play Morrowind and Oblivion (using a de-leveler like Francesco's overhaul) on the same character, probably hopping back and forth and doing them both gradually.  But I have a question that concerns me.

There are Daedric quests in both games... that often lead to getting the same artifacts.  Goldbrand, Ring of Khajiiti, Umbra, Azura's Star, Skeleton Key, Mehrunes' Razor, etc.  Is there anything done about this?  Will I wind up with two of each that have different stats?  Will I wind up with duplicates?  Will I wind up with a mixture?  What can be done to prevent getting multiples of these artifacts, other than simply avoiding getting them in one region or another?

The ideal situation would be keeping the combination lore friendly and have it make sense... such as the daedra lords not giving out the same artifact twice.  Is there anything I can use to reconcile this potential "problem?"

Bethesda did not think through Oblivion, and there are lots of things that are the same. You are correct that you get the same Daedric items. Morrowind Items are unique unto themselves; they are not the same objects as Oblivion objects of the same name, but yes, indeed you will end up with two copies of Umbra, Goldbrand, etc., probably with different stats. Nothing has been done about this, or is planed, or even talked about. I personally do not think this is something that can be fixed, or that everybody will agree on. If you have any ideas, please share them, otherwise, just don't do one or the other Daedric Quests.

Thank you for the quick answer.

Well... my best and only idea woulc be to make two mods, one that replaces all the duplicates on the Morrowind side with the Oblivion equivalents (in a way that balance mods like MOBS effects them), and one that replaces all the duplicates on Oblivion's side with the Morroblivion ones.  Both could do something like having you be rewarded with gold, soul gems, or some other generic reward (maybe "mundane" replicas/mimicries?) when you get the second copy.

By having two mods, players can either stick to the pure Morroblivion stuff or instead have their artifacts' stats in line with any balance mod applied to the vanilla Oblivion items, depending on which .esp they use.

I have absolutely no idea how manageable that would be.  Maybe simplify it to where they just turn the unfavored side's duplicates to alternate rewards without checking to see if it's the first or second time the artifact would be obtained?

Edit:  Of course, for those favoring Morroblivion's Mehrunes' Razor, it's as simple as not using that DLC.  That's one less quest available, but I don't think that would be a terrible loss.  Anyways, nothing would have to be done about that artifact for the mod favoring the Morrowind side.

My plan is to not worry about it. I'll do the Morrowind quests, and when I get to Cyrodiil I'll do the Oblivion quests. So what if the items are named the same? It's not the destination that matters... it's the quest, the journey. I am certainly not going to devote any time to it when there is plenty of other stuff still needing to be done.

I can understand that, but you did tell me to share any ideas I had...

Personally, I intend to dual wield Goldbrands. ;)
