I made a larger sketch with pen of one of the tree types, fitting in more with the 3rd shape type ( the spiraling one ).

A sculpt of one of the trees I've been working on.  I suppose I can't claim this since I'm still working on another claim.  I started it anyway :D

Just figured I would give this claim a go.  I enjoy nature modeling, so I decided to go ahead and start with 1.  I couldn't finish it tonight, because it's too late, but I got the UV done, and a basic texture with lines on it, that you see on the model. I'll send an update sometime tomorrow.  :)

EDIT:  Added a texture that I quickly made, and rendered it in 3ds Max.  I'll most likely change the texture.  Just trying to get a good idea of the colors and general texture pattern.

Ted already did a molag amur tree that was top notch quality, i have it in my dungeon, i think he wants to crank out a few varients.

hey . i made these trees to test tree modeling . i would do the trees if you think the quality is good enough. what do you think?

For me it looks good. I have only note to ending branches. They should be narrowing like in the left top example. For me right example looks a bit unnatural.

yeah, the branches are not good yet but i can change that when i get the thumps up for the task.

Btw. Your trees fit to burn out version tedesignz version could be for those more lively. It would be waste to get rid off them

i fixed the branches.better?

For me it's much better. Keep it up.

i am not happy with the quality yet.

can someone sent me pictures from skywind tree models that i have a reference i can aim for? that would be nice.

is a normal map for the trees even needed?

and how manyy triangles should such a tree have?

iam stuck and i realy need help. :S

Magma mushrooms? Maybe not good idea.

Looks great! Keep going with what you have. The current models from morrowind are all incredibly generic trees so anything like what you have going currently will look better than what morrowind has.

Here are some responces to your questions.

is a normal map for the trees even needed?

Yes, also make a specular map for that slick current gen look

and how manyy triangles should such a tree have?

Give or take 3k for these trees as they are going to be the main focus of an otherwise barren landscape

thank you erikchristensen. thx for helping me... any suggestions are welcome. i keep continuing reaseach.

heres an update. i added some dark color in the folds of the tree so.

i try to find a solution to make the texture more sharp.

is the general shape of the tree good enough?

Would be great to have live variant of this trees. Possible with succulent leaves of cane cactus or opuntia.

or with any other succulent leaves:

You can also differ surface a bit with charred areas like below with some totally burned "whites parts". Somewhere on the bottom.

[External image][External image]

and maybe with places where bark fallen off

[External image]

There could be also places where unburned wood could be revealed (maybe some dark brown, just sth which fits)

[External image]

Some places near roots could be smoldering too

I'll say again
Ted and I already did this. Afaik he only did one tree, but we did all the textures needed, including the burn layer.

Trees cannot be baked in this manner.

Smarti only needs to convert his hi poly trees into low poly ones, strips of quads that flow and follow the twisting bark the tree.
use 3ds max's retopology over the hi poly models.

hey rav, here is the low poly model.  one has 1700 tris and the other 7000 tris. i just run a turbosmooth over the low poly model. i sculpted then a little on it.

what do i do next?

ok here are the 3 trees.

-retopo done

-uv done

-branches done

i scaled the trees but the size of the texture may be rescaled again. i scaled the uv to fit teds resoluton.
