Quest, but not quest

Submitted by lukkar on

Thelas' pillows is good example. There are no journal entries for this quest, thus it does not have a proper quest ID.

"Drarayne's Pillows

This is one of the more obscure quests in the game which takes a bit of luck, and a good memory to discover. On a Fighters Guild quest to kill some rats in the house of Drarayne Thelas, you may have noticed the unusually large number of pillows she keeps.

Pillow Shipment

On the other end of the island, far to the north in the Sheogorad Region, you'll find an Abandoned Shipwreck, north of the Sanctus Shrine (far west of Dagon Fel and just north of the Vas stronghold). Inside the cabin you'll find an invoice for 40 pillows addressed to Thelas.

While you cannot deliver the pillows, you can give Thelas the invoice and receive an "Extra-Comfy Pillow" as a reward (talk to her about a 'Pillow Shipment' when you have the invoice). The pillow merely changes the message you receive when you wake from sleep to "Your sleep is very restful on your Extra-Comfy Pillow"."

It takes a great immersion to the game and it could be hard or easy as you want, because you don't have feeling that you didn't end sth.

So for example for Dragonbone cuirass it could be way:

1. You heard in some bar (maybe some dialogue between NPC's). That ship recently crushed after storm somewhere on coast (they say some details)

2. In the ship you find captain notebook in which you read that they were treasure hunters.

3. Treasure map is hidden somewhere on the board. You have details how to find it in notebook.

4. You find map and go to mudan grotto for cruirass.

There could be several quests like two before. The cool thing is that this is quite easy to implement.

These types of quests really are the most immersive, the more, the better!

It was just example. It could be some brainstorm here. I know that fallout 3 had several "quests" like that. If anyone has additional ideas (maybe just borrow from other games) it would be cool. I got this idea because I played last time AC: Black Flag.

----------------

The main reason is that some solution like that game is getting older much slower because you can always discover sth.

I love it! Immersion was a great factor in Morrowind so the more the better.

Treasure maps are the most obvious. Fallout 3 did have a few missions like this that were borderline Easter eggs. Like finding the legendary Rockopolis, even though there is no map marker or quest pertaining to it. These quests are interesting because they aren't spoon fed to you. NPC mentions something peculiar, and the player investigates without being prompted, and finds a new weapon, dead body, or something humorous. This would be a great way to add spice to a cave, or some nonessential NPC dialogue.

I've recently started playing Morrowind again and had no idea there was a pillow shipment for Thelas, thanks for the tip, man!

I also agree with the comments above, I think overhearing some stuff at your local Cornerclub or accidentally finding a treasure map that shows up in your quest log is a very good way to keep track of interesting finds and locations.

There is many empty caves and abandoned ships and... so I have more suggestions. To get more ideas we can do competition on facebook page like in dwemer artifacts example. I know that we had random events but this is sth else. So more ideas=more things to choose of

-----------

So we can add some small things, for example some humorous petroglyphs which explains that you can find some entry to cave or how to get to interesting place (some burial place). Nothing too rewarding (maybe just find some bones). We can use graffiti like these for it. Good for fun with playing as archeologist.

-----------

Another idea is for example situation when in some imperial fort and you shoot arrow into target. Then some soldiers will see it and invite you to take part into archery completion (I know that was sth similar in skyrim). You will not get any prize but it will show that game is living.

Similar thing could be in tavern with darts.

-----------

In tavern you can start to talk to some beauty and sb will go up to you that you are picking up sb wife/girlfriend. When he lose enough health he will calm down.

You sit down in front of to bartender then sb sit next to you, he said "Next round is on me!" And he starts talking about his miserable life. It would be great effect with drug mode

You sit in someone's place by table, guys next to start to intimidating you, when you are stubborn they attack you. But when you are Nerevarine they are joyful and they ask you about your adventures (It would be great opportunity to talk them some bullshit and gloss over your achievements)

-----------

There could be bard in tavern/plaza singing about latest events in city (It could be good replacement for local newspaper). OK it's not exactly "Quest, but not quest" but you have players action=other NPC's reaction

-----------

You leave your mighty guar in the city and someone steals it. You have to find out who done it and retrieve guar, similar to one fallout quest

These types of things are cool, but quite honestly, you've got to find someone willing to put the time in to do them or else you're just chewing the fat over these ideas. Find someone who would like to do this type of thing, Pick the best idea, Do it, then rinse and repeat. Until you lock someone in I think these good ideas will remain forum chat and will remain largely unproductive "what if scenarios". I really encourage anyone willing to do this type of thing to pick up the CK and implement it. If you don't know anyone, or don't have CK skills, advertise on the public forum areanto try to grab a newbie to the site or on the FB page or elsewhere. I am willing to add any needed minor VA work to the scripts if I receive the quest/encounter's corresponding .esp when it is done. good hunting

This is why I putted in suggestions. Sth which could be done without burden core team. I just wanted to see reaction if these ideas will be well welcomed or not. I try to avoid situation where someone do sth and it will be simply rejected. This is not sth melted with game itself and completely optional and not conflicting with other quests, so It could be implement anytime or not. "Find someone who would like to do this type of thing, Pick the best idea, Do it, then rinse and repeat." Ok I understand this as green light and I will encourage if someone new will appear. The only thing which I provide from my site is 2D art, I honestly know CK poorly. But again it sounds good for me.

I think that the first step to implementing this would be to set up a thread just like Random Event Writers Needed!, get some ideas, and start implementing them to the worldspace, and dungeons.
