Dialogue Emotion Assignment (NO SKILL/YOU CAN HELP!)

Submitted by Taerkalith on

Hello everyone! I'm back with another task which will help Skywind's wonderful characters be more fully realized. Facial Emotions!

Simply assign one of the eight different emotion types listed to a particular line of dialogue and voila! facial movements abound!

You can do as little or as much as you want. Just make sure to finish whatever line you start to make it easier to complete everything.

Now you may say this is tedious, but you'll find it quite enjoyable actually, reading through the dialogue, thinking in the mind of a character, "what are they saying?" "how would I say it?" "boy I'm going to make so and so super pissed at the player" and to know that iconic figures will scowl or smile because of the choices you make.

If this is your cup of tea and you want to help Skywind but have absolutely no skills then THIS JOB IS FOR YOU!

Here is the link to the document, please don't trash it. If you make a mistake there is an undo feature in the document:

** If you are curious how putting these into an excel ends up in-game, just know that I am a wizard.

Here is a youtube video that includes the facial expressions we are using.

Here is a link to a composite image of the expressions.
Have it open in a separate tab if you find it helps

Before I start, obligatory questions from my experience as a translator:

  1. Can the context for these lines be found anywhere? It's important to know the character's general attitude for some lines, e.g. I can't tell if "I would rather die free than be a slave again" should be "angry" or "sad".
  2. Is there a video of all the expressions in action?

This is my jam!

From what I've seen so far, I would pretty much kill to know who the speaker is and what the context is.  Shnatsel is right.

It's primarily the context which is the most important. Unfortunately there's no easy way to show this relationship without throwing a bunch of jargon filled quest names that won't help the inexperienced, however I can add what the player says to trigger the topic if there is such a trigger, which will help a bit. In terms of who it is, that is also difficult due to the nature of the primarily document's setup and how the game defines who can say which lines but hopefully the player's question will help.

The columns are getting all screwed up.  Is there a way to protect them?

Player prompt added for the lines that it applies to. Remember, if you sign-in while viewing the document you can use the chat feature to ask other's advice about a line if you are unsure what to do. If there are any especially problematic lines I will do my best to track down additional information if you post the line # here.

Awesome, thanks!

The columns are still messed up though.

Edit: Never mind, I refreshed the page and it's fixed.

Sorry for the stuff being moved around. I'll leave it alone now. There's no easy way to protect them and still have the document editable. I've hidden columns A-C again because the information isn't relevant to the sorting process. Best to leave them closed. Remember everyone the TAB key is your friend when cycling through the columns!

Is there a mocking kinda face expression? Like smug or something? There seems to be a lot where they seem to be mocking, making fun of the player.

@Mcloganator, Someone made the top row stickied. This isn't actually a bad idea. I've stuck the emotion types in it so that it's always available. If you think something else should be changed, sign into the chat on the document and we can fix it.

@jobe, unfortunately no, I wish there was. Disgust will sometimes work or perhaps puzzled. here is a video of facial expressions. Just make note of the one's we're using. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcLiWgZWR6w

Does helping make this excel get us access to the game? :)

Also lines 35398-35440 look kind of messed up if nobody pointed that out yet.

Are you saying doing such a glorious task isn't all the reward you need? I sincerely doubt it not that it really matters just wait until the beta comes out.

Easier said than done ;). I already watched all the walkthroughs on youtube but they are so old now I am dying for an updated play through to watch or just to play and upload videos myself.

Go play morroblivion if you want to get your morrofix right away. Its mostly complete but the projects been abandoned for obvious reasons. Keep in mind if you play it you'll be seeing a lot of textures and models from morrowind in there since it's quite literally just an esp of morrowind made to work in oblivion. They both use the same engine so it works but expect a little choppiness.

These lines are written in dunmeri (for ashlanders). The translation is found in the emotion box. So replace the english translation with the emotion type.

Morroblivion is far from abandoned. Stop making assumptions.

how do i send what i've done?

You don't need to. Its all done live.

Great work so far guys. This will be polished off far faster than I expected by the look of things. All I ask is in your spare time over the coming weeks if you can knock off a small bit every few days then as a group it'll get done quite quickly! Slow and steady wins the race for these types of things, unless you`re got OCD!

Been doing a fair amount of these here and there, really not too bad and I feel like I'm contributing yaay.

Quick question: Is this case-sensitive? I've found and fixed some entries that were already made but not capitalized. Should I bother continuing to do this?

Don't worry about the case sensitivity, there's so many just do what's fastest. I'll be fixing it all up at the end with a mass find and replace function that excel has natively to make sure everything is uniform. Thanks for your contribution so far!

Poor wording on my part slowed down would be a better phrasing. By obvious reasons I mean a lot of the people who were working on morroblivion are focusing on skywind. I didn't mean to offend anyone working on morroblivion, far from it morroblivion is my go to if I want to play morrowind since 2012.

Are the facial morph expressions variable, such as 0.5 anger, and can not 2 be combined?

I knocked off a good 200 or so I'll probably hop back on and do some more later today.

Hi everyone, I'm a new member and lurked for a while before finding something I could actually do, I'm going to start working on this right now.

@ravanna. Only one facial emotion at a time. There is a variable, in Skywind it is set at 50 (out of 100). In Skyrim the standard was also 50 but they sometimes lowered it to 25 or 10 to lessen the facial contortions. I think it would be too hard for people to guess what is appropriate without seeing it in-game. Once we have all the emotions set, I'll put it in-game, walk around and if anger = 50 is too strong I'll do a batch replace of anger values that are not combat related etc. until things looks right. This will be tinkering on my end since these volunteers can't see the values in-game and for the most part the base value of 50 should be OK in most instances.

Thanks for answering, taerkalith, dunno why I didn't think of that :P.

Lots of people seem to be forgetting to do more than the first column. I have to check my own work sometimes because it's so easy to forget. Gentle reminder if anyone who checks the thread has been forgetting. Also a good thing to check if you don't have a place you want to start contributing to.

Also taerkalith, you may want to add angry>anger in your find and replace. I'm seeing it a lot, I think because the word-forms of the emotions aren't consistent. Not your fault (since that's how the mod does it), but I'm seeing it a lot.

Since we're having a bit of down time between getting the script lines and assigned roles, I really wouldn't mind doing this. I really hope we don't get trolls who put some of the sad monologues from Vivec and make him smile or something.

Update: I started with about 15 lines, I'll be doing a lot more when I get free time. I think it would be a good idea to flesh out all of the simple emotions first, and then work on figuring out complexity in some.

Ryizine, I've noticed no trolling. I've seen a couple of obviously wrong lines (usually it's because I remember their context, or people don't want to put neutral) but unless it's happening beyond the first couple thousand I'm seeing no trolling or massive inaccuracy. Plus any major ones should be noticeable with some in-game testing.

But this is backed up somewhere, right? Because the whole document could be shredded pretty easily.

Also more tips! Sometimes googling the lines +morrowind (don't quote the lines) will bring up a site that talks about it and approximates the text. There have been a few where I'm just lost, and this helps in about half of the cases. The rest I have to guess. And copy a cell that says Neutral to the clipboard. It helps when you run into generic lines.

Would it be okay to use this thread to ask for help? I don't remember all of the lines and some of them are tough without context. I *think* this one's anger (context is that you won't hand over Chrysamere?) but if anyone can confirm that'd be helpful. I'm also more than willing to help pin down lines others can't get.

"It is my duty to return Chrysamere to the Legions!" -2348. Maybe he's excited at the prospect? I put anger, please feel free to change it.

Anger/Angry doesn't really matter as long as I know what it is meant to be. I'll just batch replace them all to be correct in the end in about 5mins so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I'm backing up progress locally on my computer every couple of days to avert any major trolling possibility.
This thread is a great place to ask for help if you're unsure about a line. I'll try to get anyone the necessary info to give more context to some of the more difficult lines.

Bythmark has great advice about googling lines. If you just copy paste the line and add the words "morrowind" and sometimes "uesp" you tend to get hits.

2348 is spoken by Varus Vantinius, part of
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Lord%27s_Mail_%28quest%29

this line happens when you refuse to give him the sword, so anger is correct.

It may appear a bit messy but I'm going to add the prompt for the missing lines as well. It comes with some garbage info but I'm sure you guys will appreciate the extra info.

Hi everyone, I need some advice, I just stumbled upon some of Ra'Virr's lines, specifically those in which he tells you how good his "daedric" weapons are. I put a "surprise" tag on his first line, (What? You say these are not daedric weapons? No, you're right, but Ra'Virr is no liar) but I have doubts on the rest of them. Personally I'd go with neutral, but I would like to hear other thoughts before writing it in the document.

Yeah, I'm just saying in case you have a list of find>replaces somewhere. I've started to leave stuff like that be.

Falyse, I'd go with what you've got. It's closer to any of the actual emotions which would be a little more involved. It's also just a generally safe bet. If you want to share the line numbers I can give you a more informed opinion, but iirc the conversation isn't a very emotional one.

Remember guys, if you sign-in with a google account you can chat realtime in the doc about any issues you're having. I would recommend of getting into the habit of it :).

@bythmark, at the the end I'll use the drop down lists to see what interesting combinations we've ended up with and then batch replace from that information until we end up with the 8 options we should have. Thanks for pointing this sort of thing out though!

Okay, you're a higher-level spreadsheet wizard than I thought. I didn't know that kinda stuff was even possible.

Excellent!

I've completed lines 20000-23000 and the range of different context has been very interesting, from generic greetings to daedric quests. Although I do believe that once the lines have been recorded we will need to re-evaluate the facial emotion of some of them, as i feel that  some of them could be spoken quite differently.

Bythmark, I scrolled the document but I couldn't find the lines again, and I don't remember the number, anyway, thank you for your advice.

@Falyse

It's line 2524.  If you hit Ctrl + F you can search for any specific words in the document.

Just finished ~800 lines. Great way to kill time! :D

Also, I have a few questions:

- Are some lines intentionally repeated? 2862 and 2863 are identical.

- Lines 29069-29160 Ignore the proper format entirely. Are these meant to be here?! 0_o

I've been acting out the lines before filling and there are lots of cases with mild surprise, but not the extreme surprise or puzzlement shown in the video. Latest example:

"A High Elf named Mossanon? I don't know anyone by that name. But there aren't many High Elves in Sadrith Mora."

Responses for bringing up already completed quests and just responses that are weird under the circumstances are abundant because Morrowind hardly ever removed topics. So there's a response for every weird corner case, and that should also raise an eyebrow (or those responses should never be used in the first place, and the topic should be deleted instead).

In fact, there are a lot of cases where putting "Neutral" all over them doesn't feel right, but putting emotions from the video is a bit too extreme. Can we have things like "Mild surprise" to put over the lines like this one? Judging by the posts above, a "mild" variant for every emotion should be possible.

Oh yeah, and a single image with all possible emotion in it, labeled which is which, would be immensely helpful. I found that re-watching that video every time is unbelievably time-consuming.

Mcloganator, I didn't know that, thank you.

@DoomKnight

repeated lines occur on occasion, they are primarily left over from how the line conditioning system worked in morrowind, but sometimes it's done to make conditioning clearer. EG (knight and male) or (priest and dark elf). The brackets are not possible, only a system of comparison value priority, so it can be tricky not to mess it up without duplicating lines. The weird lines with english in the first emotion box are dunmeri lines VA will be speaking. Just write over the english translation when assigning emotions as it will be the dunmeri which is spoken.

@Shnatsel. Yes there is a variable involved. I haven't included columns for it because I expected it to be confusing for most people and to make the spreadsheet harder to navigate.

In Skyrim the base value is 50/100 for most lines, occasionally they use 25 and 10 as well from my brief poking around, they might use 100 for anger in combat but I haven't checked that out in detail. Skywind currently has all values set to 50.

What we can do is at the end after all lines have their emotion types assigned we can then filter the list by emotion type. At this point we can look at say, all the lines with surprise as their value, and assign the integer values then. The reason why I don't want to do it as we go, is I think it will be easier to assign them properly relative to other lines with the same emotion value. Also, I don't think everyone would use the same range and we'd get a lack of uniformity from assigner to assigner. When we get to this stage I'll take some screenshots of the each emotion value at 10,25,50,75,100 strength so we know what they look like and then get everyone who wants to help with this stage aware of the values they should be using before we proceed. So for now, if you think there should be a hint of surprise or puzzled, just go for it and don't think about "how much" for now.

Concerning redundant lines about already completed quests, there is a chance they may not make it into the final build, however there's only one of me working on dialogue directly in the CK, and these normally fall on the fringes of what our two active quester implementers deal with. I have to be careful with cutting these lines too, because sometimes they are actually needed. I am aware of there existance though.

Edit: I've added a composite image of the facial expressions to the top.

@taerkalith Thanks for the detailed reply. I've noticed that the "Fear" face the and "Surprise" face are identical on the image you posted. Is this a mistake, or is that how it looks within the mod?

It isn't a mistake, the mouth is open for fear, and more or less closed for surprise. These are the vanilla expressions as far as I know. I'm not sure if the mod changes any of the facial emotions or if I just hit the screen capture button at a moment when they happen to be quite similar, but just know that there is a difference in how the mouths are.

There is a mod that changes the female facial animations. I didnt like it tho, the happy animation made the lip sort of inverted, it creeped me out...
