Dialogue Emotion Assignment (NO SKILL/YOU CAN HELP!)

Submitted by Taerkalith on

Hello everyone! I'm back with another task which will help Skywind's wonderful characters be more fully realized. Facial Emotions!

Simply assign one of the eight different emotion types listed to a particular line of dialogue and voila! facial movements abound!

You can do as little or as much as you want. Just make sure to finish whatever line you start to make it easier to complete everything.

Now you may say this is tedious, but you'll find it quite enjoyable actually, reading through the dialogue, thinking in the mind of a character, "what are they saying?" "how would I say it?" "boy I'm going to make so and so super pissed at the player" and to know that iconic figures will scowl or smile because of the choices you make.

If this is your cup of tea and you want to help Skywind but have absolutely no skills then THIS JOB IS FOR YOU!

Here is the link to the document, please don't trash it. If you make a mistake there is an undo feature in the document:

** If you are curious how putting these into an excel ends up in-game, just know that I am a wizard.

Here is a youtube video that includes the facial expressions we are using.

Here is a link to a composite image of the expressions.
Have it open in a separate tab if you find it helps

Mcloganator, can you be more specific? I forgot to mention if the response is missing in "line1" but there are responses in "line2, line3, etc" just ignore the line. I often delete the line1 as a way of deleting the entire entry as it won't be processed. I'll make a note of it on the doc. If this is the issue you're referring to then problem solved, if not, please explain.

Also seems someone moved the columns around incorrectly. I've fixed it so now the quest topic is visible again. This information is useful for context or if you want to find out what quest a line is associated with. If people can keep an eye out for sabotage that would be nice. I make backups constantly in-case we're experiencing any.

We're nearing the 1/3 mark! This is remarkable progress for how long this has been up, keep up the good work people! and remember to leave columns a-c hidden. They're only for me later on.

I found out what the problem was and fixed it.  The text on those lines was set for "overflow" instead of "wrap."  I went through and applied text wrapping to the whole document, so now there shouldn't be any places where the text is running all over the place and into other columns.

Lines 26,206-26,322 appear to have translations in the emotion's column.  How should I proceed?

overwrite the english translation (get rid of it). Just use it as a reference. This document we're using here isn't what ends up in game for subtitles so don't worry about it.

Okay, thanks!

I was looking over the sheet, and in a couple of places I've noticed typos. Am I allowed to fix those typos, or should I tell someone of them?

Ok, so I began filling in some emotions, and I came down to row 32,129. Only to discover that there was text that appeared to be in the wrong location, this text was within the column designated for the emotion, and the column to its right had text in some other form of language that I was unfamiliar with. Not really sure what to do about that...

Taerkalith has this to say on the matter:

"These lines are written in dunmeri (for ashlanders). The translation is found in the emotion box. So replace the english translation with the emotion type.  Just use it as a reference.  This document we're using here isn't what ends up in game for subtitles so don't worry about it."

@maegon

Concerning the dialogue in the wrong column see Mcloganator's quote of my earlier post above. Also I'd recommend reading through this thread quickly if you have questions before posting as other people may have already posted a question about your issue which I have replied to. I may add this to the OP as it seems to be a popular question though and I can understand the confusion.

Concerning typos, if you can leave a post here with the row number and the fix I'll do my best to update it in-game. The other method you can do is leave a comment on a cell within the spreadsheet with the typo/issue (if you know how to use the simple comment feature). I check these on occasion and fix them as well. Either way works!

First time helper here :). Would love to help with this stuff. read almost all the stuff in the topic and did some browsing through the docs file.

Found some things on line 29733 and 29736 that have the emotion "tongue-tied" and "still tongue-tied".

Also on line 30326 till 30350. Is the text (what looks like the translation) on the right place?

Something went wrong, sorry for the double post.

For lines 29733 and 29736:

Someone, I have no idea who, has been putting loads of very inventive custom emotions all over the place.  While I understand they put in a lot of hard work trying to insert really descriptive emotions in the document, entries such as "wistfully glances over shoulder" etc. simply do not work for what we are specifically doing here.  There are eight unambiguous emotion types given as choices for using in the emotion column (Neutral, Happy, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Sad, Surprise, Puzzled).  I know sometimes it seems like NONE of these are good choices, but we have to make do with what we've been given.  If you do run across more of these custom emotions, I'm afraid you'll have to delete them and then put in an appropriate value.

Apparently these are actor instructions, but they should still be deleted and replaced nonetheless.

For lines 30326 through 30350:

These are the Dunmeri lines with the English translations in the emotions column.  Simply click the cells with the English translations and delete their current values.  Enter in the appropriate emotion and you're done!  The only reason the translation is there is so you know what emotion to assign to the dialog.

Hello!

I have been working on it for a few hours, and plan to do more. I have noticed that some of the dialogs contain repeated phrases, which would look/sound rather odd. Something like: ""In Morrowind, if you have disturbing dreams, the Temple says you are crazy. And they want to lock you up."  " and after that "And if you have disturbing dreams, and think they MEAN something, then the Temple thinks you're a prophet or witch. And they want to lock you up."

If I find small mistakes like this, can I correct them, or should I leave them be?

If you correct them it will have no in-game effect. This spreadsheet is only being used for the emotion type values.

Unfortunately this is just how morrowind was written. The sentence structure technically works but it's a bit clunky. These are primarily remnants from when topics like "disturbing dreams" were hyperlinked in the text to other topics. We just got to roll with it as VA scripts are already going out. We thought about re-writing these but frankly, it's a massive amount of work for the size of our team with only a moderate benefit. However if you see punctuation or spelling errors do report them and I will fix them in-game as these only really affect the subtitles, not what is being voice acted.

Thanks taerkalith, I made comments on the spreadsheet.

Also, just wondering, but what'll happen if not all of the values which should be filled with emotions are not filled? Due to the large number of lines that need to be filled it wouldn't surprise me if a few slipped through the cracks.

I WILL FIND THEM ALL AND HUNT THEM DOWN!

but seriously, it's easy to see if values are not filled using the drop down filtering menus. Once we think we're done, I'll review it and set it up so the remaining missed values can be polished off.

Added 99 lines that were previously missing to the bottom of the doc.

So another contributor re-sorted the document ('round 2:00pm EST, I think), and I'm not confident enough in Drive to change it back, and he doesn't know how either. He meant well, but everything's out of order. He says he only changed Column F, where a line that should be at the top is in line 4944. Also a lot of lines (at least by number) are missing before ~6000. Dunno where they ended up. Please to help.

It's been fixed.

Thanks! Fun stuff now, I filled in all the remaining holes/incomplete rows up to 6800, which was only a few hundred missing lines, but it looks smoother. I did this so that everyone who wants to help has to scroll or drag the scroll bar more.

Sorry about that, I thought it only affects my way of view on it, should have known better.

No worries!

Logan, Leonard, and I have had a discussion in chat and we would like to make a request. We would like to have a version of Skywind with only the disgusted and puzzled emotions, at full intensity, back and forth. Please take this into consideration.

I was filling in some of the emotions on the spreadsheets, and I happened to notice that from around the 18,000 line to around 23,000 there were a lot of gaps for the lines said by characters. Not sure if it's meant to be like that, but it doesn't look right. Just pointing things out.

I did a backup of the document early this morning (1am PST) I think with the issues it may make sense to revert to this back up to be safe. If I get a yes from some of the regulars like McLoganator and Bythmark I'll do it. Any progress you've made since then could be copy pasted from this doc so you won't really lose anything if you worked in a block.

Edit: I will be doing this later tonight when I have time. I'll just copy and paste the emotion row data over from the existing excel into the backup so any progress you've made since should be carried over properly. I'm also thinking about making it so you have to be logged on to edit, that way you can see chat at all times. Anyone in support/against this?

When the issues first arose we quickly rolled back to a revision that was, I want to say, about half an hour older than the one that contained the problems.  I scanned through much of the doc and everything looked pretty good after that, but I guess it is better to be safe than sorry!

As for being signed in, I am all for it.  It allows for volunteers to collaborate and ask/answer questions quickly.

I agree too. It's a good idea.

If you see emotion types like "tongue-tied" these are actor directions. Overwrite them with real emotions but take them into consideration as the actors will be using them to help voice their lines.

It's primarily the context which is the most important. Unfortunately there's no easy way to show this relationship without throwing a bunch of jargon filled quest names that won't help the inexperienced, however I can add what the player says to trigger the topic if there is such a trigger, which will help a bit. In terms of who it is, that is also difficult due to the nature of the primarily document's setup and how the game defines who can say which lines but hopefully the player's question will help.

Knowing a quest name would be huge.  Any form of information we could use to do research on the dialogue.  I'm a fairly experienced Morrowind player, but the game is gigantic and no one person will remember everything perfectly.

Example:  Found an apparent chain of dialogues, one included the name Rabinna.  This was enough to find the relevant quest, which then gave me a good idea what was going on.  I then searched through the entire spreadsheet and filled out all relevant lines to that quest - some of which would have been missed/"wrong" without that context.

I've updated the spreadsheet since the post you quoted. If you read through this thread you'll run into what I said about the update. The first column now includes the quest topic name which often is a version of the quest name found in morrowind. For example:

fbmwBMWildHuntHunterAsSGameTopic "Hunter's Game" [DIAL:0100B103]

from this line we know it is a BM (bloodmoon) quest concerning the wild hunt, hunter as game topic. This info can sometimes allow one to track down the speakers on uesp.

Yeah, I've realized that since getting a little further, my apologies!  It's fun doing the detective work on this.  May have to start self-teaching one of the other in-demand skills once this outlet runs dry, this is addictive.

I'm cool with whatever changes. I'm still into all this, just been busy with school junk. With any luck I'll see you folks on the doc this weekend!

Wow we're already half way there. You guys have been amazing! Keep up the awesome work and soon all our NPCs will be contourting their faces every which way!

Is the document messed up again? Things like N on the first lines and a lot Neutraleutraleutral around 9114.

seems like a lot of Ns have been replaced with "Neutral"

Hmm, I'll check it out tomorrow guys. Thanks for posting. Shouldn't be too difficult to fix. Sounds like someone did a replace search replacing "N" with "Neutral". I'll post when this has been remedied.

It's fixed now. In total we lost a little under 200 rows of new assignments. If you run into a section you know you've already done you can take your old information from this copy of the broken sheet here and paste it into the fixed document.

Want to thank everyone for their hard work so far! Sorry I wasn't a bit quicker fixing this.

new here, but updated the spreadsheet to have data validation for that column, won't reject other input, but will have the options available for each one.

I've done another bunch of lines in various places.

The data validation thing is nice but isn't it supposed to be Disgust instead of Disgusted?

I was also wondering about that? Isn't it supposed to say Disgust?

Just some questions before I start working:

  • How many to go?
  • Should we check if the one others made are correct?
  • Are there lines missing or are these all of them?

Thx Entze

These are all the lines. We are about half way there! At the end we will do checking for missing/corrections as it's easy to do then.
