Help. Lock picks won't equip? Few other things.

Submitted by Nastybuzzard on

Don't judge me please. I am not the brightest person when it comes to mods and morroblivion is my first real mod.

I spent a lot of time getting this installed. After long hours I can get it to load on the boat, then it tells me my order is wrong, and I leave the boat and I am missing buildings. I save, change the order and load back up and everythings there. If I try to start once I fix order though, I start out in the jail cell... Not too big of an issue.

Anyways, I play as a thief and I can't equip lockpicks or use them. I am speaking of the very first lockpick you pick up at the consensus office.

Download LOOT and run it for Oblivion - that should fix your load order issues.

As far as I know those lockpicks do nothing - I always just sell them. You'll need the original lockpicks from Oblivion to pick locks (they can be found in Vvardenfell, they're just hidden. The Thieves Guild sells them and a few bandits carry some).

This reminds me that lockpicks are insanely hard to find in Morroblivion because the levelled lockpicks were apparently not converted and all the placed instances of lockpicks aren't placed in the game world. If there's any interest in this I could fix that by placing the lockpicks where they're supposed to or using the converter to do it.

As to your other problems: You can't equip lockpicks in Oblivion. Lockpicking is handled through a mini game. If you want it to be the way it was in Morrowind you can use a mod like this. There's also probes that can unarm trapped doors which you can use once you activate a trapped door.

If you want to start your game in Morrowind by default then go to data/ini/Morroblivion.ini and change the setting to do it there, though that should be case by default anyway.

So i just figured out about the minigame like oblivion for lock picks last night. Although I broke it immediately, it is kind of hard to do using the 360 controller for some reason or I am just not used to it any more.

Lockpicks are kind of an issue since i play as a thief pretty much.

Also I noticed last night when I put on a robe my character went invisible (1st person view) from the wrists down?

Another thing, anyone good with using xbox 360 controller? I am doing this all off my laptop and have no room to set up for key board and mouse so I need to use a controller. I have controller plugged in and mapped with joytokey. My problems are that some buttons have dual actions no matter how I program it or set it up.

For example:

A- action (spacebar) and also makes me sneak?

B-menu and also makes me jump?

Top right bumper- cast magic but also zooms out to 3rd person?

If I click the left thumb stick- it blocks and sneaks at the same time?

I have downloaded BOSS and LOOT but neither can detect oblivion.exe? I dont have it as a steam game and I moved it from program files to c/games/oblivion but boss or loot wont start up b/c they automatically look for oblivion without any direction from me.

I did download nexus mod manager as well and it detected it just fine.

So about lockpics, are you saying I should abandon trying to play as a thief?

What you could do is use the console command   player.additem a 1   whenever you find a new lockpick - it'll give you a functioning lockpick to use.

That would be awesome, but I still think they should be fairly rare because it's fun when each lockpick is precious. In Oblivion and Skyrim, I always have an abundance of lockpicks without trying and it's not as immersive.

I would prefer not to have to use console command to add them... I guess if it will be hard to play as a thief I guess I could just try another route but that is what all my play throughs are for the most part, im a sneaky lil thief.

There's only one kind of lockpicks and they all are perfectly usable. Perhaps you mean probes, but they serve different purpose.

Why do you think so? I have checked for this previously and Morroblivion has lockpicks in places where they were in Morrowind. Vendors also sell them in somewhat greater quantities, because lockpicking mechanics are very different between 2 games.

I have played as thief in Morroblivion and had enough lockpicks. You mostly have to buy them though, which was also the case in Morrowind.

Ahhh ok, well as long as they are as available as they were in Morrowind that will be perfectly fine. I feel like oblivion and skyrim threw them at you a little too much. So that is good news!

Now if I could just figure out how in the hell to get this xbox 360 controller to work!! I am so excited to play this!

Ah, yeah, probes. But... what purpose are they used for? I can't do anything with probes. Wouldn't it make more sense to replace the probes with lockpicks?

They are used to disarm traps on doors/chests.

Yeah, at second glance I noticed you're right but there's a few instances of dungeons and a couple of NPCs that don't have lock picks in Morroblivion. Not sure how much of a difference a few more lock picks will make but I placed them anyway.

Probes are great! I definitely prefer them than other methods of disarming traps. It is amazing all that was captured in this. I may do like suggested earlier and replace the oblivion mini game for lockpicking with the old style.
