How is armor going to work?

Submitted by Gerrinator on

Sorry if this is a common question or already explained elsewhere, but I am not entirely clear on this.  How is armor going to be worn in skywind?  Is it going to work the same way as Morrowind, where you can wear clothes under your armor and have pauldrons, greaves, etc seperate from the chestplate, or is it going to work just as it did in Skyrim?

edit 1: My bad.  I seem to have skipped over this exact question in the FAQ.  I will have to be more keen next time.

I'm fairly sure we are using Skyrim's armor system, and that the decision was made after doing research into changing this and finding issues.

Please utilize the search function in the top left of the screen next time.

we really tried to use the morrowind method.
but skyrim has the armour sets somewhat hard coded into it.
we are able to add extra slots (pauldrons, greaves etc) but they dont change shape with the player, so it was just a mess.
it also complicates the system so much we couldnt manage it.
however when released, i'm certain some modder can work on it themselves

I don't mean to be rude, but we have an FAQ for a reason Ya' know

I don't know who was doing the testing but you can totally have them change shape with body weight. We ended up going with skyrim's system for the same reason Bethesda made it in the first place. I'm hoping when we get the project out that I can learn to adapt the armor to the old system and get someone to develop a spyproc patcher to distribute the added parts for me.

Big issue after much discussion was that many of our armour sets were not being made to the same part specs. This would mean if one had a shorter waistline and another armour set had a high one, if you mismatched the different sets you could get nasty clipping/empty spaces. I'm sure some modding will go into this after the release as some obvious things like left/right gauntlets/boots wouldn't be an issue and pauldrons may even be able to work with a bit of additional work on the models.

I did the testing for armors.

Weight Slider could work with no problem, so the armor can tecnically morph with NPC size, real issue is : no armor is made of the same parts , so splitting chest pieces results in very awful results , and some amors simply don't have separated pauldrons to work with. If anyone will change that after relase that will require to remesh almost all armors.

Even simple boots/guantlets spiliiting would require ALOT of additional work ,and honestly I can think at separate pauldrons as a thing, but a single boots/gauntlet is nonsense, even if it was implemented in Morrowind.

I would be happy with just cuirass and greaves split and no weight slider at all. I can live without the weight slider, but cuirass and greaves split would be very nice.. Pauldrons would be nice too, but not essential.

If you want to get technical with it, cuirasses and greaves are already separate.  Greaves are lower leg armor, not upper.  ;P

Well, I don't want to get technical, my good man, because english is not my native language. I call greaves the trousers or armored legs because that is the name Oblivion (my first Elder Scrolls game) gave to them. :D

Very funny fact, if you go to google image and seach for "greaves" you will have a lot of real life images of armored boots (your technical definition of greaves) and a lot of Elder Scrools images of armored trousers and legs (my "TES" definition of greaves).

Oh, and a tattooed vagina. I don't know why the tattooed vagina is there. May have something to do the chainmail bikinis, who knows. :D

I don't think going with the knightly plate mail separation is necessary, since most armors in Skywind will not be full plate anyway. I'd be opting for making the pauldrons optional, kind of like it was in Skyrim - we often had a version of armor with pauldrons and without. Pauldrons could take a slot and be removable, and I swear I saw that done in one of AlexB's videos. But even that would only be for certain armours. It's just easy variation.

All of the above mentioned changes take a lot of time to do if it isn't being done in the initial design and may not work across different armour types. Once we have all our armour sets out we can revisit these possibilities with a modeler who is interested in doing the work needed. Good chance with a release of Skywind some old-school morrowind fan who's a modeler will come out of the woodwork who badly wants this done.

@Sancez I'm sure there are more than a few tattooed vagina pictures no matter what you're searching for.

Another easy sort of variation can be seen in Dawnguard armor, they have them with and without shoulders as well, but also have small bits that are different between armors, such as canteens, pendants, etc. (also each is a different color)

Oh speaking of chainmail bikini. Can we do that, as like an easter egg?

Chainmail bikini, both for male and female, daedric armor rating and the NPCs keep telling you to put some cloth on, like you were naked (and you actually are with a bikini) xD
