What has NOT been done?

Submitted by SlappyThePoptart on

OK, so I haven't been very active on here, to be honest it's because I have nothing to give to help the project, but one thing has been bothering me. The title says it all, we keep getting images, videos, and concept art, but I want to know what still needs to be done.
It's cool to see progress, but what is it to see a new landscape without seeing the bigger picture? How "done" is the world? What percentage of the lines have been recorded? What about quests?

I don't want to bother, but it would really help to have some idea of your progress.

For two minutes I'd like for you to put yourself in our shoes. Imagine yourself creating a game like Skywind, we have the foundation of Morrowind to work with yes, but everything has to be replaced. You basically have to create a game from scratch during your spare time while still having to maintain your personal and social life on the side, relying only on people who are equally or less dedicated than you. People come and go as they please, there is nothing keeping them here. Compare this to a game company, who often take 4 years or more to make a game. They have employees who all work 37 hours a week, and money to make sure they stay there. This team is probably more experienced in every aspect of game creation as well. The project you are doing rely solely on peoples own motivation. You're pouring an immense amount of energy into something because you enjoy it. You want to share it with others because you think it's cool, because you want to share the joy that you get from creating the game. However, you don't get anything from this, not a penny not a dime, so working on it fulltime is not a viable option.

Based on the above, how long do you think it would take to create a mod like this, and how stable would the number you come up with be?

To be honest, you're asking the same question as everyone else, just in a slightly different way. We're well aware that it will take a long time, longer than most people think is worth it.

Don't get me wrong, the dedication of the people working on this project is astonishing, and I do believe that we will finish the game. I could do a guesstimate of how far along we are, but even that wouldn't be approximate, I simply can't answer your question because I don't know. We might be 60% of the way(this is a random number), but tomorrow two of our leads may leave, or perhaps we will run into a wall that prevents us from going any further. Giving an idea of how "done" something is doesn't reflect the complexity of the project, it's not a linear line where we can say that in 90 days we'll be done. An issue might set us back 5%. If I say "this is 60% done!" you will come back to me in half a year and ask why we haven't finished yet.

The above doesn't bother me, because i LIKE doing this, I like the people around here, I like sharing it with people who can't contribute which is one of the reasons I started the blog, I like the fact that random people can come together on the internet and create, more or less, an entire game from scratch.

I'm a grown ass man, but you people actually make me sad sometimes. You're asking for a release date on something you'd never have to pay for, as if we owe anyone anything. I'm thrilled people take an interest in the project, but please try to see it from our point of view.

*This is my own personal view, and does not necessarily reflects the view of the team*

Hey team? We don't say this often enough to each other, but you guys are awesome. Thanks for being part of this project, I hope we'll reach a point where we can all pat each other on the back and look back at what we created together.

Dude, he just asked what hasn't been done yet.

Well that is simple, everything that originates from the original TES3 or TES4 games!

Everyone willing to / and actually contributing to this project and is familiar with the older TES3 and TES4 games will spot the part of the project to work on in a split second. No need to keep track of things.

The quality standard within this project is so high that even already replaced content gets replaced again and again if better content is made by better skilled contributors.

I think you want to have a rough picture of what is done and what not to guesstimate the progess of the project so you have an idea when to expect a release.

Honest answer: Don't do it, it's pointless. Why? Well Mace already said it. Progress is not linear in a project like this. Sometimes i can work 6 hours straight, sometimes i got only half an hour, because i have a life outside of this project, including work, social life etc.

Even if you ask me about my work specifically, i couldn't give you an answer. Even I don't know everything that has to be done in my field of work. Maybe someone has an awesome idea, maybe something unexpected happens.

So the only honest answer to your question would be: Everything that is not done. When are we done with it? When it's done.

60-65% when u average departments. Some departments drag that average down. Quests are mostly done but sometimes the linked location markers and references get broken and we have to patch.

We're running out of breathe here, we need more professionals and mod veterns to help, but help isnt forth coming.

You can help by nagging on forums or other site, just not nexus, still a dicey subject ;)

What wall do you anticipate running into that could permanently stall the project? I am merely curious. I'm just glad you guys are even working on this, seeing as bethesda couldn't be bothered. Amazing stuff so far!

A current wall would be a need for someone to setup the creature's ingame so that their animation will work correctly for the new ones we're introducing. We have had a our primary guy doing this become less engaged with the project (but he did a tremendous amount of work), and so new creatures can't be focused on right now. These are the sorts of things that pop up.

Is setting up the creatures ingame difficult? Is there any kind of tutorial (text or video is fine) on how to do this?

It is difficult. You'd have to ask Ravanna about it but if you have no background in animation and nifskope I wouldn't even bother as you won't be able to do it.

I have to echo what Mace said about y'all being awesome!  It's just so amazing to see such talented and dedicated people pour their hearts and souls into such a beautiful project.  I only wish I had the skills to properly help things move along; I'm decent at writing banter and filling out spreadsheets, but that's about it. [External image] Just know that if any of you need me to fetch coffee, massage your backs, or do any other menial task, I'm your man!

Actually I would kill for an intern to massage my back and give me indian head massages.

Ok, wow...
I just wanted to have some concept of the progress made, I'm not asking for a release date.
You think I don't know what you're going through? I couldn't imagine doing what you people do.
even if I could help, I'm not sure I would want to, if this is any representation of how you treat others.
and how could I help if I don't know what has and hasn't been done yet?

If you want to help, just fill the volunteer form, post a brief description of what it is you do in the right volunteering topic. In a few days, work will come to you. Everything you will have to do, multiplied by the number of devs working, is what has not yet been done.

There's so much unfinished business we dont have time to come up with a checklist.

Join the party and you'll find out.

Well, sorry for bothering. I'll try to help, in any way I can. I'm just tired of seeing fancy looking trailers but having no clue what they mean...
Can someone just delete this thread now?

The thing is, so many people ask about the progress of the project I think it's hard to think of new answers. Don't take it too personnally. The videos don't lie : the work that has been done is amazing. It's just A LOT of work.

I think this thread has gotten off-topic and a bit unfair to the OP so I'm going to lock it. OP, if you want to help or know more information, check out the volunteer and FAQ pages respectively, they have some of the info you want.

Questwise most of it's done except for little knitpicky programming details (like the strongholds).

Voice Acting is still in it's infancy of getting content into the game, but I've just finished generating the remaining scripts. So this should pick up in a big way now.
