Progress?

Submitted by Kobra X on

Is this effort still at hand? I think i speak for everyone when I say we NEED this. TES is years from a new release and morrowind graphics are awful. So awful that i cant play it without this amazing effort. Let us know a rough ETA on this project please?

Progress is goes on, but there is no rough estimation even for work of any devs.

bethesda should buy the work you guys did from you and complete it on their own. That way its an official title that gets finished for sure. I worry the project will not be completed.

Thanks for your concern, KobraX. If you're so worried, perhaps you might consider contributing to the project. Here is the link to our volunteer hub.

Feel free to apply and help making Skywind a reality. ;)

It takes 50 professional artists/coders/+other various 3 years to make a game of this size and complexity, and we have a 1/3 of that.
Spread the word for help.

Skywind is in fact in development for no longer than 2 years. Everything made before that time had to be pretty much scrapped. 2 years is really not a long time to make a game, even smaller in scale and with much bigger, proffessional team. I don't know why people are getting an impression that it should be finished by now...

i see a lot of replies and comments about the time it takes to complete a game by a full development staff and how Skywind does not have that.

but when a game is being designed and produced by that "full" development staff the content is not already created and laid out for them. this is just a giant reproduction using already developed writing, gameplay, modeling, etc. not an actual full game development project.

people are doing this on their free time and without corporate salaries is what should be considered. there is no deadline where your job may be in jeopardy if certain tasks aren't completed. and real life can easily stand in the way since this isn't actually generating income for the said staff.

hopefully it will be completed while Skyrim's version of the Creation engine's graphics are still something worth playing.

i would more consider donating if there was still even a small alpha/beta test available. maybe a single mission or single village that could be explored.

In terms of music, 3d, 2d, and a few other sections, I can assure you this is a full game development

This can be proven by how grey Ive gone in the last 2 years.

You would be right to point out that we're working of our own free will (and often that time is competing against jobs and education, which should take priority) but I have to disagree on the "game is already made for us" point.

This rant is more aimed at the people who assume this isn't hard work... GObonzo, I feel from your post you might understand the effort here a bit better than others, so hopefully you won't be offended by this too much.

Rant

We're working with a newer engine (Bethesda just upgrade their engine over time, right?) so we have a lot of new features we can include that weren't in vanilla Morrowind (e.g. NPC scheduels, so shop keepers don't wait 24/7 for the player's patronage), as well as a lot of features in Skyrim's engine that have to be included (e.g. actual dialogue, which takes time to write and record). The fact we're using a newer engine means we have a lot more to include, hence its more than just a reproduction.

Legal requirements also state that we have to remake everything from Morrowind. Ripping assets simply isn't allowed, and is the main reason that reproductions like these take so damn long (and often fail, since people lose motivation). Modelling takes a long time, UV mapping and texturing takes time too, as does animating. Of course we have to make it to a much higher standard of quality than Morrowind had originally, since a Skyrim engine with 240p graphics would look absolutely horrendous. Judging from numerous threads, it appears as though we're forgoing Skyrim's base assets too (at least mostly), so in terms of asset production, this might as well be a standalone game for how much is going into it.

Music is same as the asset/legal above. With that in mind, there doesn't seem to be any problem finding people willing to make music for Skywind of top-tier quality to match even that of Mr. Soule's.

There's also the fact that we're doing a bit more than a reproduction. I could be wrong on this since I'm not part of the department for it but it would seem that many locations are being completely overhauled and improved. Screenshots of Caldera make it look more like what you'd expect from a charter mining town with a corrupt ruler, for example. Think of this like the Better Cities mods for Oblivion, the towns are being completely remade to reflect their character.

One major irk of mine is when people diminish the effort one party is putting into their project because another party is putting more into theirs. Game developers do more work (they are, after all, being paid for it) but that doesn't mean that the Skywind team is slacking off.

Game developers find a engine, for example Unreal 4. They then build a tool kit, Creation Engine in Skyrim's case. The developers behind Skywind are basically making a Assassins Creed or Far Cry sequel but with a lot more dialogue and depth going in.

Its ridiculous, course that word carries a lot of weight behind it. Ridiculous amount of work, lol answering yes would be a understatement. Ridiculous that Bethesda can only give a thumbs up on giving permission to work on the project. One could say,

"we are lucky Bethesda is even allowing it to be developed"

Very true, but in my experience of growing up the past 31 years when you show someone "Hey we are really doing this project" I feel that a company like Bethesda could lend something other then just a thumbs up. I might be out of line by saying that, but I mean com on. Look at the Skywind development progress videos, they completely speak for themselves.

"Hey dad I really want this new thing that will help me do this" - Son

"Hey well son your going to haft to show me that you will be interested in doing it" - Dad

x amount of time later,

"Holy****" - Dad

"Dad?" - Son

"Oh sorry son, wow that is really impressive, I can't believe you did that. Hey I think I can lend a hand and help you now." - Dad

^, Dad should be Bethesda right now. Sure there are some developers at the Bethesda studio, "Man these guys are killing it on this Skywind project", but they are not the ones in charge in making decisions. Its like when are you not greedy?

Just my opinion, and I know that just went quickly into a rant, but as fun as it is for some of you all to work on Skywind there are people who really want to play it and have been waiting a long time. With full appreciation and respect toward the developers behind Skywind, Bethesda could at least lend a hand, not just a happy thumbs up.

"Bethesda has been working with Skywind developers on there off time in completing the project"

Bam just like that. I am sure there are some Bethesda developers, among other game developers that are working on this project on there off time, I am sure I don't know, but I do know that the project is under staff and that you guys do need help.

Where is this happy thumbs up that Bethesda directed towards Skywind? I wasn't aware they'd even mentioned Skywind openly.

Well, I know they've now given permission for discussion about Skywind to take place on their official forums, so there's that slight nod of approval, I guess.

I presume that's nonsense.

I'm shocked if that is true. I went on a in the moment rant up there but on a business stand point I understand, but that is kind of the greed aspect. The gaming industry has become such a business, in terms of dlc, micro transactions, etc. Licensing however gets a little bit ridiculous in the gaming industry in some area's in my opinion, I didn't say all. In the case of Bethesda, they are not going to advertise or support Skywind because that detracts from Morrowind/Tribunal/Bloodmon there IP, there license, there game, there money.

However there are other ways to support Skywind, and I don't mean just taking over the project. Bethesda taking over the rest of the project would be a good thing (maybe?) for us the none developers that are just sitting by wanting to play Skywind. However its a community project and people enjoy working on it.

So that kind of comes into the greed aspect I pointed out in my original post. Betheda lends out any support, lends some development assistance, anything at all then at that point they kind of put Skywind ahead of Morrowind/Tribunal/Bloodmoon, and Skywind isn't there product. Skywind can only become Bethesda's product if they just come in and take it over completely. That again is great for us that are just waiting to play the game, but then it suddenly becomes a Bethesda Morrowind remake with the Skyrim engine/creation kit and no longer a community project.

All in all Skyrim will age better then Morrowind, so its not a case of "we are taking too long to develop this". Especially that everything going into Skywind is new, its using the same engine/creation kit but its a different game over all.
