Translating Skywind to Your Language

Foreword: although the old post below is still a fair appraisal for totally manual translation, we're looking for possible translation leads who have existing experience with Elder Scrolls or Fallout modding or translation to see if we can establish a crowd-sourced process that still compiles.

I've been getting a lot of sporadic requests to translate skywind over the last year. So here is the central place to ask questions and get resources but before going into this I want to make one thing really clear:

No one on the Skywind team is interested in helping with translations

This is not because we don't think it's a worthwhile task, or that your language isn't valid, but just because of the mountain of work it is and the unlikely chance of any translations to be completed unless you have some coding skills for auto-translating at least part of the dialogue.

Some facts before you commit to trying:

1. Skywind has roughly 40,000 lines. Let that number sink in. not 4,000, not 10,000 not 20,000 ----- 40,000 lines. Oh and that doesn't include multiple segments to a line which means a single line can run into the high hundreds of words.

2. No one else has gotten even a few hundred lines done in any language and you are unlikely to be able to find other people to help

3. The best way forward would be to use a translation program to auto-translate. If your language does not normally translate easily from English with the current best software (google most likely), then I really wouldn't try - you'll get frustrated and quit.

4. Once translated with a program - you still need to pick through the lines. This alone will take probably about 1 year of your time working semi-consistently on it.

5. Merging it into the main project. This is the easy step and I WOULD help you if you manage to get this far but I'd ask you to do some research into this: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes5Mod:String_Table_File_Format

6. Made it this far? Think you have the technical and grammatical know-how to do this? Then you'll want to work off of this document:

Remember, we won't help anyone inquiring with "How Tos", you have to really show that you can do this on your own before I'll consider helping out as it is otherwise a waste of time I could be spending on getting stuff done on the main project. Just how it is.

You guys may want to talk to Hakyon about how he is doing his translations. He has some systems in place for the portuguese version which may be helpful for other language translations.

You can do whatever you want Supernath97 but I'd recommend some critical thinking about what sort of questions you need to ask, and which questions are in the same area as where to arrange the deck chairs on the titanic. Ultimately it is irrelevant as the decision has no lasting consequences.

something around 300 lines , AFTER partially revise the beginning and end . For pt-br work 'it well , you try for your language

Basicly if morrowind + xpacs and skyrim was translated into same language, then we could move this translation into mod, right?

Won't work, because all those 40,000 lines were written especially for Skywind, so you won't find much similarities (well, some atleast) between Morrowind original's lines and Skywind.

For example. word sword- it is still 5 letters no matter if it is in window or under face of npc. So if u will take out all text from Morrowind + xpacs into, let's say "text folder", then u will put into same named "text folder" for mod- it should work? (ofc things like hyperlinks are bit different) but in generall sword is sword, bow is bow and so on. Where am I wrong?

@worm, Not at all. Easiest way is to translate this document however you want and then use the xpacs or tes5edit to get the changes pushes into the .esm file. Skywind text, although similar to morrowind, has been broken up into sections and some of it re-written to remove things like the ability for the player's name to show up in original morrowind. Also instances of removing "outlander" and bad grammar from khajiits and argonians. You however could look at the morrowind translated versions if you can get the text in a spreadsheet and might find a way to correlate it to this sheet using recognition patterns and that might speed things up. You'd need decent VBA knowledge most likely to do this in excel.

If there would be a group that would send to you localisation - it is ok with you that this gonna be only subtitles? I mean - no voice records and so on (we leave it in English), only version as subtitle?

If I get some subtitle files (you know dialogue subtitles), and I will gladly begin working on translating every text into danish. The voices and that will stay in english.

I'd gladly help the French-English team if they need it, even thought I don't have much free time because of college. I'm fluent into both languages, even thought my mother tongue is French.

I expect you're aware of this

I expect you're aware of this, Taerkalith, but the Google Translate API isn't too expensive ($20/1m characters). If each phrase is around 120 characters on average, that's around $100 per language.

Naturally that won't be great in terms of translations, but it might be a significant timesaver for translators to correct the worst lines rather than typing each one from scratch. I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard to get donations specifically for the translations, although I don't know what sort of legal issues you have to avoid when tasking donations in general.

We can't raise money to pay

We can't raise money to pay anyone directly but if an individual paid for it and then gave us the creative commons permissions that is a different story. I'm officially not encouraging this though as I can make no promises on the end result and don't want anyone feeling like they spent money for something that may turn out differently or that the onus is on me to finish implementing their translations because they spent money. I have very little interest in translations personally so this comes down to those that want to do them. I've just offered to help at the very end with implementation as I keep getting inquiries.

Indeed, Google API would save everyone a lot of time. But I believe the cost is too high for everyone here to invest, even if it's a collaborative work.

In the way things are going, I believe we can proceed with the translations in a less time-consuming way by following what Hakyon mentioned... Select a certain number of lines, send the document to Google Translator, receiving the output, revising few lines and attaching them back to the Excel sheet, leaving the fine adjustment as final task. For the Brazilian Portuguese translation, that's the way we are approaching this task.

We are winning time with partial translation by Google, but then we will have to review. However until then we will have a version 0.1

I announce that the Skywind

I announce that the Skywind translation to Portuguese (pt-BR) is at the following status:
- All lines were successfully translated by Google Translator, thus resulting in a 0.1 version of the translation
- Now, we are at review and fine adjustment phase, which is going through every line and reviewing grammar, proper writing and (most important) context

We estimate in about 6 or 8 months for completion of this phase, which will result in a 1.0 version of the translation. This will depend entirely on our own schedule, as well as complexity of the lines.

To shorten this time, if there are any Brazilian people (or anyone who knows Brazilian Portuguese) available and willing to help on this task, we'll be very grateful. É só mandar mensagem! :)

In case there are Portuguese people (or anyone living in a Portuguese-speaking region) willing to do a translation as well, just contact us and we will send our version of the file, even with some language differences. That way, you can do the proper adjustments in pt-PT.

I guess there is no translation needed, because everyone who is following the Skywind Project does that in english. so we all understand that language.
For me as a German Native Speaker is it more confusing to hear the spoken words in english and read the text in german.
So, keep it English, i guess everyone will be fine with it.

It's more comfortable to play, with our own native language.

Most of French people don't speak english at all, hand it'll be more attractive for them to play in their native language.

It's almost crucial for the very best visibility, of the game.
