Crash upon attempting to load Aesliip's Lair

Submitted by zaxmax67 on

Hello everyone,

First off I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in this project - you have truly created a marvel  of gaming  in my eyes [External image]

I am currently in Solstheim attempting to complete the Trial of Strength quest, however when I attempt to enter Aesliip's Lair in the Caves of Fjalding, my game immediately crashes upon attempting to load the map.

This has happened to me before when I attempted to enter the Cave of Hidden Music, but I solved it then by adding the Better Creatures mod which I believe solved the crash by adding missing Draugr mesh files, but that is just a speculation.

Any help at all would be much obliged. I'll provide any list or log that is needed.

Many thanks,

Zax

Hmm, I've been studying that map and nothing stands out which could potentially cause your crash.

I'm not sure how helpful this fix is to your situation, but I think it's worth a try:  https://tesrenewal.com/comment/85043#comment-85043

If that doesn't work, you can try is to unload all optional ESPs and Mesh/Texture replacers, create a fresh save in the exterior world outside of the caves, then try to re-enter.  If it works, then just reload your mods after leaving the cave.  Note: this will wipe out any items you may have acquired that are unique to those optional mods.

Go ahead and post your mod load order from Wrye Bash.

I made a custom ESP which deletes nearly everything from that cell except the persistent records and a floor for you and the NPC to stand on... hopefully the remaining records are not causing the crash.  Try it out like this:

1. Load the aesliip-troubleshoot.esp in the last position.
2. Start your saved-game.  Try to enter to room.
3. If it doesn't crash, make a new save-game file.
4. Quit Oblivion, unload the ESP and try to load that new save-game.

Perhaps this will reset any references or corupt memory areas in the save-game that might be causing crashes.  At the very least, it will help narrow down what is causing problems.

Also install MessageLogger and provide the MessageLog.txt file.

Do you have some non-vanilla skeleton/skeletonbeast.nif?

The CTD on map open happens in both Oblivion and Skyrim (the games use the same core engine features) and the most common reason I've come across is that the game has overwritten an esp or enb file affecting the graphical layout of the map(I run into this issue every time I install a new ENB in skyrim - I redownload the files and overwrite the existing ones to fix it). The easiest fix I've found is a reinstall of the mods being used, starting with the Graphics mods before anything else.

Hello everyone,

I attempted to use the above ESP with no luck - tried it both with my mods running as usual and again with only the Morroblivion core mods running. Still CTDing.

I have attached the MessageLog.txt file as requested.

I'm not sure I know. How can I check which .nif files I have?

I'll try to reinstall mods resources as suggested. Maybe it's a bad Mesh or something of the sort?

Thank you all once again for your help

If that troubleshoot ESP has no effect on the CTDs, then I suspect it's the NPC record for Aesliip himself that's causing the crash... I'll make a new ESP for you to try to test this theory...

Just load it into memory to see if you can enter that cell.

It worked! I can enter the cell now, but it is empty except for a small floorspace and the cave exit in the distance.

What now?

cool -- now we need to figure out why the NPC record for aesliip is causing your game to crash... let me look into it... Okay, I think I've find the problem: it all goes back to you issue with Draugr meshes causing crashes.  You fixed the regular Draugr creatures by using a mesh replacer, but Aesliip is an NPC, not a creature, so the replacer did not affect him.

Check your "\Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Character\" folder and see if you have a subfolder named "Draugr".  If you do, try renaming the folder to something like "Draugr-broken".  This will hopefully allow the version found inside the BSA to load.  If that doesn't work, then your BSA may be corrupted -- you'll need to reinstall it from the Wrye Bash Installers tab.

If all else fails, here is a work-around which turns Aesliip from a Draugr to a Breton.  Just load this at the end of your normal mod list.

Yes! The final ESP solved the issue! Thank you so much.

I'll keep all this in mind next time I have a similar CTD and go over my files again if needed.
