Is Morrowind overrated?

Submitted by grumpycat on

Not actually trolling, as I'm balls deep in this project, but being a Morrowind virgin more or less, I have to say that after reviewing the interiors for the game, it looks boring as hell!

Did people really find it fun wandering around empty rooms? Doesn't seem like there is much to do, and most of them look pointless. I'm crossing fingers that the dialog is outstanding, at this stage I cant find myself having any fun wandering what seems to be the same blank corridors and rooms for hours on end.

Do people have rose colored glasses on when it comes to the game? I feel like somebody should have told me that interiors are cookie cut from templates!

Real-world stuff isn't a flat-out problem, but it's also not much of a positive either. IMO, It breaks away from the fantasy-nature that lies in everything else around you, the escapism of the game. There's a difference between looking at floating netches fly by you in a serene moment, and looking at deer and rabbits in a serene moment. Are they both serene? Sure, but one I can also do in real life (and honestly, would almost rather do in real-life). For a fantasy game, IMO the less of that, the better; it should take you to a new place, not emulate one you can pretty much already see.

Your point that the other provinces are different and should be treated as such is sound and correct, but I guess since Morrowind was my first foray into TES, it kinda spoiled me on how different it is from real-world.

I wasn't complaining more about how hard the opening is, but rather that the whole idea of an opening part of the game is made obsolete by freely granting the player items(imperial steel) that are more powerful than what would otherwise be considered the "starting gear"(iron).

About puzzles, the ones in morrowind usually required a specific skill or spell, which meant that if your character wasn't the jack of all trades type, he/she was terribly inefficient(the reason for skyrim's skill system was to fix things like this). Skyrim's puzzles were a much better idea, but badly executed, bland, and unoringinal

It is not about elitism.. in the end i enjoyed skyrim way more of oblivion... Is a matter of depth....Morrowind had a dice roll that is his only flaw...This is not related with the removal of attributes or the removal fo skill that matter... I repeat that in skyrim you can have every skill at 100 but in the end if you don't have the perks the skill will be useless...

Skyrim did something right...Like for example keep a distinction of the province unlike oblivion that felt almost like a LOTR clone...But removed so much roleplay elements and character customization and overall is very bland e bad executed....

This video explain so well my point...Morrowind had depth in overall sides...

Mebrilia...Morrowind had a dice roll that is his only flaw...

The dice roll was Morrowind's only flaw? You're a fool to believe that. It's biggest flaw? That's debatable. But it's ONLY flaw? Hell no.

I am mostly referring at the percentage of hit... not at the damage per se or the critikal strike i loved that mechanic

No Morrowind was awesome, they had the best wather effects ever! [External image]

PS: And also

  • no quest markers
  • not that much levelscaling
  • much more item types and variants
  • no fast traveling all the time
  • a confusing, big map so you need days to find something hidden
  • more skills
  • more freedom do things (you could actually kill important NPC´s, without them it was impossible to finish the game)

I was 13yo or something like that, non-english speaker, playing the english version of Morrowind [External image] Oh boy, as I said no question markers and big map - that was a hell of a game for me. Never finding what I was searching for [External image] Also remember my first time modding the game, nothing special just my own house then my own npc and so on. Was awesome.

With Gothic and Gothic 2 still one of my favorite games.

As someone who loved Morrowind back in the day, I have no qualms in saying it's overrated. Glad to see people are going to try and capture the spirit of Morrowind and not do an exact replica. I've seen fan art that looks more like Morrowind than the game does, if you catch my meaning. I feel sorry for those with creative ideas who cannot implement them because of the 'lore' as interpreted by a random someone. I can tell you now, Bethesda wouldn't be so rigid. Poetic license etc. Anyway, good luck and keep up the amazing work. I'm truly astonished at how professional the standard is here.

I am not pretending the skywind team make an exact replica of morrowind..In fact from the videos i am absolutely amazed at the redesign of some scenery...But since skyrim did a lot of thing wrong like the utterly dumbing down of overall things...Read up i am referring most at the new leveling system...If they decide to bring back at least the morrowind feel of leveling (sigh i really disliked to have a intriguing school of magic like mysticism destroyed) they don't want to touch vanilla skyrim and i am ok with that...even if i am thinking that for an optimal result the perk system need to go...i will love to see old spells coming back....and also a morrowind style of enchanting and spellmaking...

Disclaimer:

I loved skyrim more than oblivion but with the dumbing down of the leveling system and the removal of skill they went to far...This is why i am searching a mod that total disable the perk system...Because let's being honest the in depth old system even if far from perfect allowed me to make several character customization at the point that when i was playing a new character felt like a new character since even the gameplay change.. In skyrim all you do is 3 kind of characters....

Smasher,Squishyer,Magical Alrtillery...

I don't see how people claim that this new system allow to make a wide range of characters...Since skill are useless and perks are necessary if you want your skill improved...

Make an experiment raise a skill at 100 and try to use it whitout any perks...You will end to realize that skills are only there to unlock the perks...And of course having a single perk at level is not bad per se in the first levels but when for example you design a character that is a combination of ability like the older game (Example a stealtish rougue with illusion magic) you will end to be inefficent because the perk point will be not enough to cover your needs...

In the old system where ability effect was tied at the ability and not the perk you can do that....

This killed a lot skyrim for me... as a long with the other motivation mentioned before....

I have faith in the skywind team i know they will try to fix thing in and there..but i still hope someone in future will make a mod to reintroduce the old system i really hate the new one.....

I feel the environment sets it apart from the others so uniquely

This is an important question. Will over half the players not be inspired enough to sink their time into a 12 year old game? Of course the people here are mostly original players. You represent the top of the nostalgic heap, so you're not going to be objective enough to see that gameplay might not actually be that interesting for todays players.

I guess my point is expect a lot of todays generation of players, not to be so loving of the generic NPC dialog and seemly endless corridors of nothing interesting. Of course we are not actually trying to sell the game so what do we care? We don't. But just be prepared for not such a loving base of players.

2002 Morrowind will seem archaic to the new generation of gamers.  During that era clutter, texture, and variety like Skyrims was pure fantasy.  Describing Morrowinds zones as boring looking seems appropriate for todays gamers.

Just to put it in perspective . . . . TES Renewal is taking a 1 gigabite game(Morrowind) and growing it into a 6+ gigabyte game(skyrim).  With 5+ gigs to play with, a not so boring TES:Morrowind is very possible.

So I am genuinely shocked that while looking through a lot of random interior locations just how empty, copy and pasted everything feels and looks. Its got me worried that although we have focused on making the landscape beautiful, as soon as you go to explore a dungeon or tomb, even buildings, the game will be boring for a lot of people. I find this a problem as game play is a lot to do with finding new locations to explore. You want to be excited about this. I'm interested to see if vanilla Morrowind/Skywind is going to wane very quickly on the average player.

The artists vision for Morrowind in 2002 far surpassed the capabilities of the technology at that time.  Would todays gamers have the issues HappyChappy described if Morrowind was developed in 2014?  What would random dungeons, ruins, tombs, and so on be like?  I doubt they would be copy and past . . .  AND THAT is what I am excited about with SKYWIND/Morrowind.  The success relies fully on the Skywind team and their contributors.[External image]
