This helmet is imported from mainland Morrowind by the Redorans. It's a small domesticated insect similar to an ant. Luckily, since it's imported we don't have to make the creature model. (Wipes forehead) What a load off. It's often worn with the chitin armor by light infantry.
Would it be possible to flatten out the top half a little bit? Obviously it has to be tall enough to accommodate a head inside, but I think it might be a wee bit overlarge at the moment.
I made the size line up to the dimensions of the original. It is plenty wide when you look at it head on. I can't make the slits see through without tripling the poly count. I'd have to add polies for the inside and polies for the slits. It would become an FPS killer, for not much gain in appearance. Also, the Khajit ears would poke through if it wasn't a head replacer. The color is similar to the original as well. I completely made up the info as to where it comes from, because no lore exists and we aren't making a creature from this (at least not for a loooong time). I'm afraid it's all packed up and headed in game as we speak, so it is what it is. Thank you for paying attention to my little helmet.
@Jorgen- I don't know. Drago designed it, and he knows his biz on armor. I just made the model. I know you hold it sideways, if that helps. The picture doesn't convey that very well.
I'm mainly speaking in regard to Skyrim's default animations. All the existing shields have a single handle, and it's reflected heavily in the vanilla animations.
Ash the model is awesome, aswell as textures are, but the single handle thing is true.
Try to " condense " the two straps into one handle, it shud not be too difficult. That said keep the 2 leather straps visible from the front, and use The DragonBorn Chitin shield as a reference about how to join the 2 leather straps into one handle.
It won't be a big deal to go to one handle. I kept the leather pieces layered so that I could make a creature from the shield. The question now is. Do you guys want it to be held upright like the picture kind of shows, or sideways with the points going toward the elbow?
Note that this chitin shield is not a round shield and it's handled differently. I've put double grip on purposefully, if we need to go with a single one due to animations, I'd prefer if it was more stiff than just leather. I don't really think it would be an issue with how Skyrim characters move, the shield would just be angled differently which is a good thing anyway (in real combat situations, unless in a dense shieldwall you'd never keep your shield flat in front of you like that, but angled instead).
Anyway, go for one grip in the middle, but I'd really like it to be more than just leather - in real conditions a shield with such grip would flop around too much, especially since in that design you can't really put the grip in the perfect center of mass, as it's necessary with round shields (and wasn't in Skyrim anyway, for some reason they went with grips similar to trash can covers, and didn't make the shield boss hollow to allow for the hand to go in there. I guess single gripped is a step forward towards reality, but still far from it).
Another solution would be to have different animations for different types of shield, but given that spears/throwing weapons are in limbo at the moment that seems pretty far off. I certainly wouldn't mind it though.
(I would say change the vanilla anims, but I don't think people would get behind that)
I actually thought that we were working on different animations for the tower shields. I know Drago would definitely get behind that. He showed me a blocking animation replacer a few hours ago.
We need more animators. I used to do animation when I was modding morrowind. Maybe if we get more modelers, I'll switch over.
The trouble isn't so much the making of the animations as it is adding entirely new animations to the game without replacing existing ones. With Ehamloptiran gone that's in limbo.
Considering I've already made spears and throwing weapons, I really hope someone comes along who can pick up where he left off. It'd be a shame to not use them.
Here is the final version of the smaller shield. It now has a singe handle made from chitin with braided leather running through it. It will be held sideways and angled back towards the elbow. The design is plain enough to work for a low tier armor set and looks like it would fit for ashlanders or city dunmer. The straps aren't supposed to be supportive of force, just keep the handle attached. Force is absorbed by the arm and shoulder, not the wrist.
I want to see every subtype of everything have its own unique animations that reflect actual martial arts. But I don't envision that happening anytime soon. At least I know spears are possible, and makes me happy, however distant they might be at the moment.
@Ashking: They'll just be using either Battle Axe/Warhammer or Greatsword animations before the unique ones are implemented. Throwing weapons would likely use bow or crossbow animations in some weird way. So those models will still be seen, even though unique animations aren't present yet.
i love where this is going! if you could model the watchman armor and helm to be bulkier and more robe like that would be cool. it makes sense to have more than the normal amount of ash protection due to all the standing around...
@Ashking From what creature did it made? It looks made from insect/crab, but it's warped bone, isn't it?

I'd keep the height, just make it wider.
That particular helmet always reminded me of those hats samurai wore... these ones.
Will the slots be see-through or black?
@Ashking I am interested in source of this info.

Good work. Not sure about reddish color, whatever.

i like it its perfect
From what I understand Veloth, there's gonna be both this Ashlander chitin armor by Ravanna and a more clean-looking version that Kurasaki was doing.
I'm a diaper baby.

So... please ignore the above tantrum.
I have re-done the Watchman Helm and I wanted to show it off here:
And I've also just finished the chitin shield:
The handles aren't pictured, but you can click on the sketchfab link below and you'll be able to see them on the shield.

All I've got left is the chitin tower shield sculpt and chitin will be done done done.
Wow love that shield and Watchmans helm!
Nicy
Looks fantastic! I especially like the way the you can see the strips from the handle on the outside of the shield.
One thing: Shouldn't it have a single handle, rather than any straps, given how shields in Skyrim and their animations are?
Thanks guys! I enjoy your kind words.

I can't find a good picture to show it.

I think we've all learned a lesson here.. Never EVER for any reason doubt Dragomirs concepts.
Dragomir knows his stuff when it comes to armor and weapons and combat. I trust him 100% to make decisions.
NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

I'm off to sculpt the tower shield now.
Yes, Tower shields having unique animations. I'd give my shield arm for that.
