Dark Brotherhood

Submitted by SnowQuuen on

Dandras Vules won't die. It just says Dandras Vules is unconscious. I reloaded going into that area quite a few times, but he just won't die. I can't pickpocket him either. Can anyone help please?

Resolved. Thanks to all.

I used hand to hand to kill him. He spoke because it took him a while to die. Thus the quest cont.

Are you using the console or some sort of scripted weapon to kill him? Even if your weapon is very powerful and he gets knocked out at the very least your controls should become disabled.

I'm not using console controls, but my weapon is a powerful masamune sword with 50 fire damage.

He's supposed to talk to you before dying, however, the script is not triggering because you kill him too quickly I think.

Use the attached esp and it should work (in a slightly different way). Would've been better if he actually had voice acting for this one line, but he doesn't, so that's how it is.

Doing some testing I found out know why the script doesn't work in this case. It checks if his health is under 50 but using a weapon with insanely high damage, killing him  in one blow his health will still register at 120. However if using an a very strong enchantment of 70 Fire Damage and a normal damage weapon he won't even die before that. So using regular Morroblivion and non cheaty weapons this bug can't be reproduced.

Even when using a weapon with 56 base damage, and 70 fire damage and lowering health via console to 60 before the first strike the script still works. Only when using weapons with damages over 9000 (figuratively speaking) this bug happens. I don't think we should accommodate such players. (I'm not accusing SnowQuuen of anything, this is just my general opinion)

I understand why you want to keep it that way, but there are multiple possibilities when player can kill him in one hit:

  • Using mods that increase weapon damage across the board, like Deadly Reflex does
  • Sneak attack with powerful bow
  • Custom made spells with weakness to elements can deal insane amounts of damage

If we want to still use dialogue mode for his death line, it's easier to just let player kill him and then resurrect like in this example.

However, I'm still not convinced this is the best way to go. In Morrowind dialogue menu appeared instantly, which is no longer the case in Oblivion.

Yes, you're probably right. It's weird if he dies and gets up again to deliver his dialogue and then dies again. I just thought having dialogue was nicer than just a message box. I never experienced this bug when I wrote the script is all and I'm mostly surprised that the game messes up the the health reading when dealing this much damage.

Can I suggest to implement it like it was do with Ulfgar the Unending(using conversation instead of message boxes)? It was a very similar scene if I recoll correctly.(There is a bug in the script in the master that I fixed in the bloodmoon debugging esp)

It should be better of a simple messagebox

There is no voice acting, so it will only be seen if player has "general subtitles" on. And honestly I don't see much difference between text in the messagebox or text in subtitles.

Well the voice acting can be integrated at another time. Maybe the Skywind voice acting can be downgraded to oblivion format.

If there will be voice acting it's not hard to change the script. I wouldn't count on it though. And Skywind is not available right now and there's no telling when it will be.
