Ok, this is the 2. Day of work i have done some boots. i really hope you like it.. i dont know... i have the feeling it maybe dont fit the concept.. well, here it is

i changed the design a little bit. i reduced the laces and added a simple stich on the upper edge of the boot.

here is my test boot from yesterday, it maybe get used for another armour.

It looks very clean and natural so far, I really like it! Are the aromour scales from the concept planned to be added later?

EDIT: I only saw the first boots variant while I was posting.

yes, i gonna do add the armor plates or scales later. my goal is now to make a undergarment, the boots you see here are part of it. then i add the armour and the pouches. i do the undergarment because we will create a second version with more metal parts. . but i personally like to model ervery single layer . clothes armor and so on. :)

It looks great so far. CAnt wait to see the rest of it. :)

Hey, i had some time left so i decided to make the pants. i used all techniques i used with the boots. the stitches are placed by hand and the holes for the stitches are placed by hand too.

What is this armor made of?

Edit: just saw the original post, nevermind. Can't wait!

Those boots and pants might make for some good guar leather.

I approve those pants!

Looks great! I love the asymmetry of the details.

This undergarment is awesome Smarti! Exactly how I envisioned it :D Only thing I'd change is the colour to be brighter, but we'll discuss the colours when we get to texturing it ;) The shape is perfect.

great to hear drago! i think i gonna delete the metal laceholder thing on the boots because they are not used on the other clothes parts and IMO breaks the style a little bit. it kinda makes it easyer later when i retopo the stuff.

also, i really like to use this ingame if all agree with that. maybe not as a priority project but later... i would then pimp it with a belt a knife and bag or whatever and voila! a simple netchiman clothing.. :)

hey, i managed to get the leg armour done.. i know it looks so unspectacular but you wont believe that it took me 8 hours tonight... iam asking myself why i took so long.. iam reached day 6 o 14.. actually the concept should be done by now. lets see if the rest take so long too. heres the picture

It's obvious why it took 8 hours to do. The details are exquisite and precisely where they should be - work of a master.

I have a feeling that I will start using netch leather armours much more than before :)

This looks great Smarti! And don't worry about the speed, might've been my fault partially :P Rest should take much shorter though, since we established the shape and texture.

What are we actually going to call this armor and how valuable will it be relative to others? It looks like something an Ascadian mercenary or perhaps Slavemaster would wear.

Nah, this is just boiled netch leather.  Going to be pretty low tier.  Netchimen and bandits will wear it the most.

Speaking of bandits, I think it would be kind of cool to have highwaymen. That was a thing in Skyrim, right?

Ten Drakes, or I'll cut ya like [livestock animal here].

i am in the valley of the suck! ...

i want to share a very very important failure NOT to make twice when working on a 3D model. i have learned, it is essential to always first "block out" every single item on the character. that means, place basic, but essentially right shaped easy to change, low detail placeholders eververywhere, where the high detailed part will be. when you not do that and work like me, the proportions will get ugly like you see in my picture. my fault was to model the boots first with all details, without relation to the other armor parts. big mistake.

ok, i take a day off, cry a little how bad iam, bla bla bla iam a noob bla bla i suck blabla. and then tomorrow i get back the work and take it like a professional.

i wish you a good day, may the brush be with you.

Seems perfectly in proportion. Here are some real life references to help you with scales

man thats sweet happychappy :) .magically a smile appeared on my face :).. and something happens in my pants, in the front this time .

Hey, i picked up my work on the armor again. i basically redo everything. there are a few placeholders for the bags and everything just to look how everything work together. iam more happy with this version now. thx for watching and have a nice day :)

no worries man :) take care

hey, i worked a bit on the armor. i have real trouble how i should make the buckles. i have several ideas. can someone send me an example or a tutorial? when it comes to buckles i realy come to a barrier which is hard to overcome. especially the decision on which technique i should use is hard.

ok. idea 1. i model the straps close to the model and let the normal map do the job. the actual buckle then is a 3d model. 2. i model a low poly flat strap and project an high res picture on it addin then a 3d buckle. 3. i just let the texture dude make the leather straps. mh . thinking it out loud, actually makes it a little easier but help would be cool. see you and have fun

my main focus was to make the chest feel wide and big and the waist thin but not girly. the shoulders should look wide.

nailed it!

Can't wait to put this on a thief type character.

It's really a shame that one of the most beautiful models has to be such a low tier armor. An amazing concept and superb execution on your part.

> such a low tier armor
= that's equal to "one of most many used in game armor". So that's good.

looks great!

hey dragomir, i hope i dont rape your design too much. send me a message and  we talk about the stuff.

wow that looks amazing! Keep up the good work!

hey, i am detailing the amour parts. my goal was to make a softer, sponge like, leather. i hope , that it looks like that for you as well. here the pics.

So detailed work is really as hard as making real piece-of-armor.

I'm liking the direction - the spongier looking leather is really helping sell the "boiled leather" look of the armor. Not to mention netches are giant floating jelly-fish, well, it looks appropriate.

Also totally agree with Alysander on the low-tier armor topic; the more we get to see of this piece the better :)

Can't wait to see the textures!

hello,

i uploaded a video in wich i show my real time detailing workflow for the leather amour plates. the idea making a video came from my urge to collaborate more and share information with the 3d artists and artists in general here in our community, for knowledge, fun and building trust and appreciation among us. to be honest, i feel a little bit isolated and working too much for myself.. this is a common issue of mine and maybe making videos will create my need of a balanced near and distance between people, between you and me. i would really appreciate any feedback about my video approach, whether it is a comment or a thump up or down. thank you and may the brush be with you. smartinius

I personally don't think it should look spongey. Maybe if it was normal leather, but boiled leather just doesn't strike me as "spongey". Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it actually more rigid and harder than un-boiled leather?

Also, there doesn't seem to be any cloth or padding under the leather, and considering it's Netch Leather, which burns and stings the skin on touch... yeah. Does boiling remove that property?

It's a great and detailed model, but some parts off it just look a little off to me.

Thanks a bunch for uploading this, i'll gladly watch this when i get home and i'm sure i'll learn something new thanks to it :)

@Imperial Auxilliary: Netch leather is spongey since they're floating creatures. It's as tough as normal leather in structure, and boiling even enhances that further, but it's much lighter. There also is an undergarment of softer netch leather from other parts of it.

hey auxiliary,

iam glad that iam catching your interest in the netchimen armour and that you think about the stuff thats going on. i guess you just want to be involved into the process of armour creating and thats why you writing down your thoughts. i really would give everyone and you too the oportunity to be involved in the decissions but thats difficult because just of the amount of different opinions that would come in.

what you can do, is that you can create a drawing or texture or something that shows the changes you would make and send it to me. if your idea enhance the quality and fits the goals we all have in mind, it might be possible to make the changes then.

here are some pictures you can use to show the changes or when you know your way around zbrush, then just send me an example of your vision of the texture.

ah one thing. iam always motivated to enhance the quality of the model so can you please show me what exactly looks off to you? thx in advance

see you around and have a nice day. smartinius

I think the armor is coming along nicely! The new texture definitely gives it that protective feel and is currently one of my favorite armors so far

Wow. I registered only to make this comment:
Very impressive.

The only suggestion I have is changing the chest pouches somewhat.
They have a very tactical look as is. Maybe a more 'crude' looking construction will fix that already.

You;ve taken this sculpt as far as its likely to go. Perhaps some trimdynamic to soften surface detail in areas, and sculpt in damage. damaged leather is achieve using snake hook and a messy blotch alpha, ripping it into suede interior parts.

We've discussed the seperate buckles already, so i think apart from tinkering you're ready to progress to low poly very soon.
But take your time with LP, we'll talk soon.

I agree with comment about the pouches looking tactical.  In the concept they were strung from a leather strap that is threaded through raised portion on front of chest.  I think it'd look best with pouches on strap behind them crossing the chest but laying above armor al around.  A second strap supporting it over the characters right shoulder would also make this look more practical.

My second observation is the position of the keffiyeh is that the width and bulk of it gives the shoulders a slightly lazy appears.  The helmet may make this difficult but bringing it back a bit as seen in concept would help make the stance more alert and aggressive in appearance.  Most of it should be below the sides of the helmet so it can be wrapped around the face for protection rom sun and sandstorm.

I'd also bring it down to a corner, just for style points.

Big improvement!

okay.  I wanted to update this post.  This is an absolutely spectacular model.  I also want to agree with your sentiment about the importance of feedback and collaboration and a positive creative environment.

Instead of the ribbed armor bulked out on the back replace the bulk with a pack.  The pack could be a sling or a two strap backpack.  Connect the front strap under arms and across chest to the bottom of the pack.  Integrated pack seems appropriate on wasteIand sort of armorset.

good work.

update: i think i am slowly getting somewhere with this piece of armour.

ps: hey sasquatch. thanks for your detailed idea . you put in quite some effort therefore thumps up. we decided to stick to the original concept but we keep your idea and see if we can use it for another armour. cu, and may the brush be with you :)

No worries,  I love your work.  I was just throwing out some ideas with those.

One last thing though.  I actually prefer the flatter armor panels from your second to last update, especially for the boots. I think they look more like the original ones. Maybe you can revert to previous boots or find a good medium between those and the current ones.
