Low FPS on a 560TI Superclock

Submitted by fewcherstar on

I'll try to keep it short just in case I'm posting this in the wrong place but I believe I should be able to run Morroblivion at higher frames than what I'm getting.  I'm in balmora and getting 25-40 fps.  I have only base Morroblivion mods running (what was suggested and required according to the official instructions) and only modded the .ini file according to what the texture mod suggested for a card with 1gb RAM yet still getting what I feel to be low frame rates for a game from 2006.  I'm just wondering if there's something I did wrong with the installation or if there's something I need to tweak.  Basically, I need to know where to begin lol.  (yes I'm new to morroblivion).

that's perfectly normal. turn off distant land, maybe revert your ini. it's a big mod, and it goes well beyond the scope of vanilla oblivion, as far as tech specs.

Dude, believe it or not, 25-40 fps is wonderfull. I'm really happy when I get low 20s fps in Balmora. Morroblivion, like MeanwhileBacklash is saying, really isn't a 2006 game. Morrowind's open cities take a massive glob out of performance, as well as the fact that now you have a whole other game running with Oblivion. Throw in some sweet texture replacers by Eloth and you're looking at a massive monster.

I agree with MeanwhileBacklash: try turning of distant land (or, just delet/move all the _far.nif files) and see what that does for you. It should make a big difference. After that you may have to get rid of texture replacers, but if I were you I'd just play as is (maybe delete the _far.nif files). 25-40 should be your low end (possibly a little lower in Sadrith Mora), and the rest of the game should be higher. That's still smooth (man, I miss the days when I had that, before I added all these mods :D )

In sadrith mora I run around with anywhere from 5-20 fps, in balmora its 12-22fps. In the wilderness its better. And I'm running with a dualcore 2.6 ghz processer with 6 gigs of ram. (and a $75 videocard).

The other things you can try that will definitly help with overall game performance:

Make sure you have the purge cell buffers mod.

Grab Hashmi's collision redone (if you're using texture replacers he has a link for that too).

Hope that at least gives you a starting point. Good luck!

Thanks all for the great suggestions.  I will try them and  report back.  Meanwhile, I'll keep checking the thread for other performance tweaks.  Like most, I want to the push the eye candy to the limits of my machine while maintaining a respectable (and playable) framerate.  I'd go crazy playing a game at only 5 fps.

This might be a silly question but is there a way to disable references to the oblivion land portions of the game?  and would it improve performance?  I only downloaded morroblivion to play morrowind with enhanced graphics so I won't likely even be visiting cyrodil.

Anyway, thanks again!

Cheers.

I don't believe that oblivion land / objects should effect your fps in morroblivion, unless those things are in morroblivion... aka if you don't see it it *shouldn't* affect your fps.

Good luck!

Check these settings out in your Oblivion INI file under Display:

iAutoViewMinDistance=2000
iAutoViewHiFrameRate=40
iAutoViewLowFrameRate=20
bAutoViewDistance=0

This is what Oblivion's engine considers 'NORMAL' for your video card. If your's says 60 and 30 or something other than 40-20 then you need to do some tweaking but if it says 40 - 20 then Oblivions engine is only able to generate that rate on your card no matter how good you card is.

Hope that helps.

I've found that faster clock speed on the CPU makes a much larger impact on Oblivion game performance than GPU. I'm running a 560ti hawk overclocked to 1020mhz, 2040 shader, 2300mhz ram. Whereas I noticed almost no difference when I overclocked my 560 (I do notice differences in Crysis and MW:LL with the 560 overclock), there was a noticable increase in performance whenever I overclocked my Phenom II 965 from 3.4 to 3.9 Ghz. There is a lot of AI and script processing going on, particularly if you're running a bunch of mods or are in a cell with lots of creatures and actors.

I really recomend you look at Oblivion Stutter Remover, which can be found here: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23208 in combination with Streamline, which I use for its cell buffer purging feature: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10400

I don't have any issues crashing (well, any more than I do usually with a modded Oblivion ;) ) when running in the wilderness of Morrowind when using these two mods with properly tweaked ini files. You may have to do some reasearch on the bethsoft forums to learn how to tweak them properly.

That's interesting that CPU is needed more than GPU, and it really does make sense. Do you have any other tips on increasing CPU speed?

I've tried OSR and it didn't work for me =/

I think I've done a lot of ini tweaks too, but I'm usually open for any method to improve my fps. :D

I'm also having this problem. In the ship it goes below 10 fps for some reason. Outsite when I look away from people it goes up 50, when I don't it's around 15-20. Far from playable. Can you help me with that two mod @Aries144 mentioned above? Or do you recommend something else to fix this as 1.5 years passed since the topic?

my specs: q9400 @3.2ghz, 4gb 1066 ram, 560ti hawk (@950mhz)

Game's CPU usage is only around %50 and GPU only %30.sad

Anyone?

What FPS level are you aiming at exactly?

I just want it to be playable. So 30 or 35+ stable fps is okay for me. I don't think it has anything to do with my specs as their use are very low. I'll accept it if i still have low fps with high cpu-gpu usage anyway.

You have a dual-core processor and Oblivion uses only one core. That's why it shows low cpu usage, when it is actually not. (yeah, Oblivion is an old game. And it wasn't greatly optimized even when it was new)

Use Oblivion Stutter Remover linked above, it helps. You may need to play around with it's settings, but they are dependant on your particular system, so there is no universal solution.

Also, what other mods are you running besided Morroblivion?

It's quad core fyi. But i also have low GPU usage.

Okay, but is there anything special i should do about that? Aries144 mentions tweaking ini files... Sounds complicated. And what about Streamline mod he mentions?

I only have official Oblivion mods/expansions besides Morroblivion.

I installed Oblivion Stutter Remover and Streamline but i still get huge fps drops. It drops instantly to 10 to 15 and really kills the playability. I don't know why is this happening i did everything right. sad

I tried that now but unfortunately it didn't help. I think main reason is low GPU usage. It's only 30%. But i don't know how to increase that without losing too much visual quality. Any idea?

Is everyone playing like this or can you play it with STABLE framerates? E.g. never goes below 30?

Sounds like you are trying to pull to much out of the Oblivion Engine

On a clean Installation of Oblivion Nothing else installed, With latest DirectX, and latest Video drivers for your video Card, Nothing else installed in windows what ever Version you have, you will not Hold a Constant 30fps there is to many Factors with ever running around Oblivion with Critters and Landscape  Change..Even on Twin PCI Express Video you will have trouble..

I use a 3 year old Computer E8500 Dual Core 3.2gig,4 gig memory,1gig with Shared memory Video uses 3gig for Video,Access time to Hard Drive is Maxed out 15mb der Second

To get 15fps Computer is useing 78% CPU, 2.8gig of Memory, and 10 mb per Second to the HardDrive

CPU Usage and Memory Usage will go up when country side and Critter movement Allow

To Get 30fps per Second Constant It will be a Costly Upgrade on Computer

How can you even play at 15 fps?  Spend $100 or less on a graphics card and you can play at 4x that.

My gtx 260 runs Oblivion everywhere at 60 fps.  I haven't tried Morroblivion with this card yet though.

@roxon_55, the problem is lack of hardware use.

I only get

500MB RAM use
500MB VRAM use
50% CPU use
30% GPU use.

Come on guys.

No one is able to help me fix this? I've been TRYING TO play this game for A WEEK, at least, almost day and night. And i'm being tortured while trying to play with such horrible framerates. I just tried to kill heavily armored "bad people" with my poor mage spells in the middle of Balmora by running LOOKING DOWN and WRITHING.

I appreciate all the work you've done but how do you expect your work to live forever if even people who're willing to do tons of work just to not miss this game out and who has such gaming rigs are unable to play? This is not helping you to spread your most beloved TES series to more, new people. PLEASE. Somebody. Help.

I'm willing to give any info you need, any hour(s ) of my time you need, anything, if only will i be able to play this game without being tortured in the end.

Again, PLEASE.

If computer is not useing Hardware you might have to start from scratch

Update Motherboard drivers,Video Drivers,DirectX,Windows Service Packs,

Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0,3.5sp1,4 client Profile

To see why Windows will not Address Hardware Correctly

If game is running correctly, then game not problem,Go through Computer to see why you can not get better out of hardware

@roxon_55, it's ONLY about this game. All of my drivers, Windows, 3rd party softwares are up to date. I can play Far Cry 3 or Battlefield 3, or any other most demanding, graphics focused games at Ultra settings without no lag at all.

Prql,

It must be a hardware or software setting on your system that is causing your problem, because I can run morrobivion at full graphics with AA etc at full in my graphics card settings.

My system is ok with a Phenon 2 X 4 [core] CPU running at 3.6Ghz per core, but I only use an AMD HD 4600 1GB ddr3 graphics card.

Are you using WinXP or Win7,?, WinXP only alows you to use about 2.5GB of your max RAM,and WIN8 is useless for anything except tablet systems imo.

@ironman12345, What version of Morroblivion do you use? v056? If so, do you use everything in it? Anything other than it?

Can load order cause this? I use BOSS for load order.

Here's my load order
Oblivion.esm
Morrowind_ob.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp
UOPS Additional Changes.esp
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp
USIPS Additional Changes.esp
Purge Cell Buffers - Cell Change.esp
Streamline 3.1.esp
DLCHorseArmor.esp
DLCOrrery.esp
DLCVileLair.esp
DLCMehrunesRazor.esp
DLCSpellTomes.esp
DLCThievesDen.esp
Morrowind_ob - MorrowOblivion Eloth Landscape & Grass for v033.esp
Morrowind_ob - Morroblivion_Chargen_And_Transport_Mod_v10.esp
Morrowind_ob - MorroblivionTreeReplacer.esp
Morrowind_ob - Morroblivion Maps.esp
Morrowind_ob - ClothingReplacer.esp
Morrowind_ob - MorroblivionWater.esp
Morrowind_ob - Faction Relationships.esp
Morrowind_ob - Conversation.esp
Voice Overs V002.esp
DLCFrostcrag.esp
Knights.esp
Bashed Patch, 0.esp
Morrowind_ob - UCWUS.esp
Morrowind_ob - Silt Striders.esp

Although before I used BOSS it wasn't any different. I've tried numerous of load orders following what I've read here. That's why I started using it anyway.

I use Win 8 64 bit. So I have access to my 4GB RAM. I know Win 8 isn't best but it's not much different than Win 7 in the matter of internal mechanics. I don't think it can possibly cause this.

Unfortunately it didn't help. I still get around 15 fps when NPC's are around. :(

I can only repeat that it must be a hardware or graphics card setting as all I do is use the OBMM to set my load order making sure the morrowind_ob.esm is right below oblivion.esm.

I have installed the OBSE and run the game from the obse loader.

Version 0.56,with all morrobivion mods added and a lot of oblivion mods ticked.

But if your game is running, then load order is not the reason,it has to be a setting in your graphics setting in windows, have you tried turning vertical sync on or off,?,with it off you are limited to the native FPS of your graphics card depending on which monitor you use.AA can be lowed one notch without much visual impact.

So if you can get me any of the Above for $100 let me Know where to Send a Bank Check to.

I bought my GTX 260 core-216 on Ebay for around $100.... Like I said, spend $100 and improve your gameplay many times over.

But it really sounds to me like you need to spend your coin on a new CPU / Motherboard.  Celeron sounds a bit ominous :)

It's funny though, I used to play Oblivion at 30 fps and I thought it was perfectly playable, until I experienced 50-60 fps :)  I could never go back now.
