Creating a torrent for non-copyrighted material (i.e., a Morrowblivion compilation)

Submitted by tunnelrat on

As I am doing a full, clean install of Morrowblivion after having numerous problems (which I know are 100% related to my trainwrecked Data folder), I am putting together (in order) one master .7z with all of the core install files (and many of the optionals).

The idea here being that, at least as of .47, it would be just a single Bash install (or copy into Oblivion/Data which I don't do).

I am making this to keep my Bash Installs directory/list clean, as well as to have it on standby for any future reinstalls.

I was wondering if:

A. It would even be permissible/authorized by the powers that be to create a torrent for this

B.  While I am doing a clean install, and will test it thoroughly before calling it good, would this cause more grief than it is worth as far as generating new support issues?

C.  It would be easy to keep it updated, and I don't mind do that... at the very least, I would take it down from my server once it becomes outdated.

In order to do this, I would create a modified Readme/Install doc with it, explaining the steps from the main readme that it combines.

If creating one compiled Data directory with the core files is not approved of, would creating a single torrent with all of the stand-alone files/options untouched be acceptable?  I.e., running through every link here and packaging up all of those files in one easy to download torrent?

Searching out and downloading everything from 4 or 5 different sites is fun... once... hahahaha

Anyway, would not think of doing anything like this without the blessings of the powers that be.

Thanks,

TR

LOL, Torrents are EVIL!
You have NO idea what kind of EVIL you’re getting yourself into.

I have to agree that downloading the full package is not a smooth process.
On the other hand downloading mods is not supposed to be easy going.

I would advise against using torrents. Strongly.

I use torrents all the time, so I don't see the big deal, other than you may need good AV software, but you should have that anyway.

I love torrents. They're really fast if there are a lot of seeders. I would definitely seed.

But like the title says, I think you could only package the mods, not the actual core Morroblivion files.

Yes, there is nothing inherently evil about torrents or P2P file sharing.

You take just as much risk downloading something from Mediafire or Megaupload (well, more risk since the ads on those sites can cause all manner of spyware injection havoc.)

I am guessing that people that disparage the use of P2P for legitimate projects such as this are either simply ignorant of what it actually does, or have an unfounded bias.

Just because most DVDs sold are pornographic doesn't mean that DVDs are pornographic.

Anyhoo, no big deal either way =)

* SIGH *

We have discussed this ad nauseum.

Because we don't have permission to repackage Vvardenfell Imports, we can't do this.  The author of Vvardenfell Imports has an "ethical problem" with Morroblivion and won't let us repackage his mod -- DESPITE the fact that he repackaged dozens of other people's work WITHOUT permission when he made Vvardenfell Imports.  I have even offered to pay him for his trouble, which he refused.  So don't bother contacting him, it's pointless.

Frankly, if it were up to me, I would have already made an installer that repackaged Vvardenfell Imports without his permission anyway, cause frankly life is too short and I do not care at ALL about the TESNEXUS rules about mod reuse that people break all the time anyway.

However, it's not up to me.  David Budreck has decided that we should respect the author of Vvardenfell Imports' wishes, and since David is the lead on this thing, that's the way it is.

In fact, David is against repackaging any of the Morroblivion Files at all, which is why I didn't do any of that for my Mod Pack.  I don't really know why, something about a file size limit on Mediafire, but please don't bug him about it.  : shrug :

----

So don't post any torrent or whatever, please.  I've done the best I can with what I've got.

----

Another possible solution would be for someone to rebuild Vvardenfell Imports from scratch so that we don't have to GET anyone's permission.  If anyone wants to do that, go for it.

Okay!  Good to know, your mod pack rocks (and was what led me to consider putting this other stuff together hehe).

I figured there was a reason, but I checked for stickies, etc... thanks for the explanation!

As far as the Vvardenfell Imports, what would go in to that? Is it just a dump and convert from Morrowind?

Wow, never knew that. I bet you Morroblivion is the only reason why his mod still exists. Seriously, just think about it.

+1.

Yeah, Tunnelrat, Thermador is right. Thermador has tried countless times trying to get support for streamlining the morroblivion installation process, from wrye bash, to exe's, to bash scripts (someone else's idea), to online auto updaters (actually think that was Hashmi's idea), but the team can never agree on this.

So it's probably best to skip on the torrent idea -- even though I like it --  and just backup up your data folder for personal use, i.e. just in case you have to reinstall Morr/Oblivion.

I have nothing against torrent itself, Its the people that post them. Over four thousand downloads from megaupload. Seven Detectable threats to my computer in all that time. Fourty downloads using torrent services. Twenty two detectable threats to my computer within that time. It seems to me that torrent is a more popular way to infect people with viruses (Likely because more people use it.) I think megaupload wins on this one. Of course many people have had similar ratios reversed so it really doesn't matter I suppose.

I personally think the installation is a mess, there are folders everywhere in my data files, often with numerous duplicates, ihave wanted to clean out alot of the unused stuff, but I have no ideas what is used or isnt.

if it was up to me and I had the time i would clean up the primary installation files remove the stuff that is not used and put all the stuff used in ONE  directory  for meshes and textures and have the morroblivion.esm be redirected to those folders.

but I dont have the time to do all this

also 4shared has infected me 3 times with there random pop up megauploads caused me to have to reinstall my os, going from windows 7 to vista (because I did not have a windows 7 disk but nI did have a vista disk)

Heh, like I said, results may vary.

Maybe we can create a torrent consist of:

Morrowind_ob.zip

Morroblivion Compelere Installation 1.zip
Morroblivion Compelere Installation 2.zip
Morroblivion Compelere Installation 3.zip

Additional Support Files 1. zip
Additional Support Files 2.zip

Eloth Misc Items.Zip
Eloth Ingredients.Zip

Eloth Visual Overhaul.zip
eloth Flora.zip
eloth tree.zip
eloth clothing.zip
...

I mean you get the image. We can put all of OUR mods into the torrent and seed it ourselves. People would choose the ZIPS they WANT to download. And they have to go to TesNexus to download extra ones...

I personally see no harm putting our own to torrent sites.

ubuntu linux is distributed using the bit torrent protocol. i personally use torrents to share my art and music with the world. for something like this, a torrent would be great, except that it gets updated so much. most people just misunderstand torrents. it wouldn't have to be posted to a bittorrent site. just a link with or even a hash code on the main page would do. also, you could just do it. i'll seed. once it's out there, there ain't no takin it down...

The issue with torrents are the same as any other download:

1.  The site you go to to actually get the torrent link may have malicious code

2.  The software you are attempting to download may have malicious code.

As any torrent would only be posted on this site, and the file would be created by the community, unless the creator themselves infected it you are good to go.

We can literally generate a .torrent, post it here, and that is the only place it would exist (unless someone uploads it to another site).  I do not believe it is impossible to inject code into a P2P stream without the CRC/etc getting borked.

If you are getting viruses/spyware/malware/trojans/etc from torrents, it's because you are downloading keygens, etc.

As Darth South said, packaging up the main files (Owned BY Morrowblivion) with each revision would be doable, and I certainly do not mind hosting the torrent (with a capped upload) in my rack at home.

I would uncap the upload until there were other seeders (Assuming that happened =) but I have Vent, Minecraft, ProjectReality, etc already running... so I need to make sure I don't choke them out.

If I were downloading such things my chances would be equally as bad with megaupload. Also, that was a rather rude way of making a point, please try to be polite when no one has been anything other than polite to you. All I did was make a suggestion and give supporting data for my own theory which I admitted wasn't very accurate data as everyone has different results. I am sorry if this annoyed or irked you in some way.

I like the idea of a torrent. I get what Thermador is saying, and I'm for Darth South's idea.

nuff said.
