CTD Outside Seyda Neen

Submitted by anakha3263 on

Hello there, I recently installed Morroblivion v50 and tested everything and it all works so far apart from one encountered issue. Just outside of Seyda Neen, across the bridge, when I turn right to go to the Adrano Ancestral Tomb I CTD next the tree on the right.

[External image]

The tree in this image, on the left of my cursor. To the left of where I stand is the Siltstrider.

Here is a picture of my load order, although I doubt this is caused by a mod conflict... best to provide as much as I can.

[External image]

Any help would make me greatful. I can walk around the spot from other directions, so it seems to be affecting only one or a few cells in that small area.

Edit: Resized images so they could be veiwed better, possibly. If you'd like a better veiw of them, let me know and I can  provide links.

There are a lot of CTD issues, due mainly to Oblivion's engine's limitations.  You can try any of the various stability improvements on TESNexus, listed here.

David's tips on crash prevention from the Project Release Thread are below:

If you experience seemingly random crashes (usually in the wilderness) then this is because
of Cell Buffer Overrun, NOT something inherently wrong with cell XYZ.

Oblivion was simply not designed to encompass Morrowind and all its denizens.

However, by doing three things, I have all but eliminated these crashes.

By doing these three things, I have gotten Oblivion back to it's normal level of "stability."

1. Purge Cell Buffers Mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9139
>>> Set to Purge with Every Cell, NOT just Loading.

2. Disable "View Distant Land" under Options.

3. Walk, don't run.

I can crash the game at will by running, and it does not take very long. I personally believe
that these crashes are because of the enormous number of creatures in the large Morrowind
Worldspace that taxes the Oblivion Game engine to the breaking point.

I do Not believe it is because of trees or poorly optimized meshes, as some others have suggested.

But, by doing these three things, I have gone from crashing every few minutes, to as I indicated, Oblivion's normal level of "stability."

Also, for me personally, using Purge Cell Buffers and turning off Distant Land is all I needed.  I still run everywhere :)

Well, the game I saved in Vvardenfell now doesn't load for some reason after taking the screenshots. And I wouldn't have thought it could be a buffer overload, it happens regardless if I opened the game 4 hours ago or 10 seconds ago. And only in those cells. I've disabled all distance options, turned all graphics to lowest, disabled mods, PCB'd my fingers off... but those cells cause havok whenever I step on them. Now I can't load that save. Luckily I saved in a different slot before traveling...save number 934 still in Cyrodiil, but saves 945 and 946 in Vvardenfell are unloadable. 945 is in Balmora... no where near that area in the world space. Which is what puzzled me.

Looks like you are on Win7 or Vista.  Do you have Oblivion installed in C:\Program Files\ ?

I do yes, but I'm running on the built in Admin account for my games. So none of that permissions lark should matter. Plus, I've editted the rights and permissions in group policy to allow anyone in the Admin group or namely, me, to have Owner privs. It's not blocking anything. And if I've forgotten to change anything for that then I need to resit my MCTS exam.

You should move the Oblivion/Morroblivion Install away from "Program Files" anyway.

Has the third service pack for Win7 been released yet?

Moved this thread. This is not an issue with the game, it's an issue with your installation of Oblivon. Backup all of your mods (bash installers folder) and savegames (in mydocs), uninstall Oblivion and all related tools/utils/savegames. Then delete everything in program files AND my docs that is oblivion related. Then reinstall it all from scratch. Good time for a fresh copy of windows, format C:, maybe a new HDD upgrade too. :) Also, 997 saves??? :-O
Karma: 0 (0 votes)

It's new 2 months back, so's the HDD, I'm running on 2TB...I don't need to upgrade. :P This also occurs when It's installed in C:/MightWork/Oblivion. I don't think it's a problem with the installation.

As far as I know Service Pack 2 hasn't even been released. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64x... so maybe 2 hasn't reached the 64x yet.

Yeah...I've been playing this game for years. And it certainly shows. I'm level 50 with no more quests to find anywhere, all DLCs complete, story complete Deadra quests complete...I can't find anything else to do. Which is why I went with Morroblivion. So I could play through Morrowind aswell (New char ofcourse...otherwise that would be stupid). I upgrade my PC regularly so I doubt it's anything to do with my hardware at all.

OK well with a new character, you're probably safe from some kind of savegame bloating issue.  Have you tried waiting 3 days (in game by pressing T, not in real life heh)?  This should clear dead creatures, which can sometimes cause these kind of proximity crashes.

It looks like you are using my complete installation - how did you install it?  Manual or Wrye Bash I hope?  It doesn't get along with OBMM installation because of the large number of files and the large total file size.

You could also try moving all of the Morrowind_ob.esp files to the end of your load order (Morrowind_ob.esm still has to come right after Oblivion.esm of course).

EDIT: also, some people have reported that disabling the unnofficial patches for Shivering Isles and the DLC (but not for oblivion) have helped stop these kind of crashes, but I don't really see how that would impact anything...

Yup, tried waiting. Had to make 3 new chars to try this all out, my first one won't load. Which was just over the hill from that crashy spot.

Manual install, I do everything the hard way. :P

I've tried it without any of the DLCs or mods, so just the Oblivion.esm and the Morrowind_ob files and for me it still crashes. Again, only at that spot, no where else I've travelled do I have this issue. And I can walk around thost cells, it's just slightly annoying that I have to avoid that tree. Means I can't get to the Siltstrider. -.-

So it happens with multiple new characters, not just the one character?  The next thing I would do is re-copy all of the content for morroblivion to your Oblivion\Data\ folder (i.e. reinstall) just in case anything got corrupted.  Re-downloading might help too, although 7zip should let you know if the archive was corrupted.

Otherwise, my next step would be to open that exterior cell in the construction set and try and figure it out.  I have v050 of my complete installation installed and my game literally never crashes (and I have gone by that spot a jillion times lately creating new characters to test bugs and make bugfixes).

Yup, just confirmed with 3 more. Multiple new chars, different races to check for any kind of racial difference... redownloaded and used latest Stable 7Zip, no kind of error message, reinstalled it all (for the buzillionth time) and it still happens. Tedious.

I can try with the construction set...I don't have much experience with it, but I can give it a go.

Yeah I am out of ideas.... :(

All you have to do is open the cell in the CS, and if you see any really weird graphics anomalies in the render window, like crazy pink or black polygons that come straight toward you, then that would indicate there is some kind of object in that cell causing the problem....

I don't see anything out of the ordinary... but then I'm not used to using the CS. Nothing immediately screams 'I'M CAUSING YOUR GAME TO CRASH LAWLZ!!1!!1!!1!one'

Looks like I might just have to avoid those cells. And delete those savegames that have been 'unhinged' as it were by some form of error.

Thanks for trying anyway.

It`s a long shot, but try removing that tree in the CS and then saving out an esp "tree_maybe.esp" or something like that and load it last.

If it works then you lose one tree.LOL.:)[Joking].

Make a backup of the folder My Documents\My Games\Oblivion and then delete it.

Start a new game and see if the crash still happens.

Sorry if you've already tried it.

Yup, tried it. Tried a complete new re-install aswell of everything oblivion and morrowind related. Nothing seems to be fixing it. I've deleted those broken saves and I just need to remember to not walk along that path.

Can you describe the exact route that you are walking?,then I will walk the same path to see if it crashes,if it don`t then it is something to do with your install or system,if it does then I will try to find out why if possible.

I turn right after the bridge and walk past the tree. Keeping to the path. I crash every time.

Again, no matter where it's installed, vanilla install, new character, I tried it on my laptop and it didn't do it using the same files. I don't see how it can be my PC's fault, it runs everything perfectly fine. My laptop has the same OS, same brands inside it, hardware's not more than a year old, it exceeds the system requirements for everything, I removed all the old save games I don't use and tried with a new char and it still did it on my PC. Not on my laptop however.

So; not my save game, not my installation (did everything the same on my laptop and it didn't happen), it's not my hardware or any software conflicts, it's not any broken INI files, I can't see any problems in the CK.

Ok,I have fast travelled to Seyda Neen and tried walking and running across the bridge turning right past the big tree on the right and had no probs reaching the strider.

As you say that it is ok on the laptop, then the only thing I can suggest is that the laptop has a different graphics card than the PC,it might need setting up again, but one thing that is sometimes overlooked is that Oblivion when running morroblivion must have the "Large" texture setting choice set in the Video ingame options.

There is definately something wrong with your PC setup, otherwise the laptop would have the same problem.?

He should also remove all mods except morroblivion and try it that way.  If it works, put your other mods back one at a time until it crashes.  Believe it (or not) the last mod added will be the cause.

:)

Graphics card isn't set up incorrectly, texture size is set to large, I'm not a noob at installing mods or I wouldn't have tried using this in the first place. I've already stated I've tried with a clean install, it still happens.

PC is running a AMD Radeon HD 5770 1GB, laptop is AMD Radeon HD 6410G on an AMD A4-3400M chip. My PC is noticabley better. I don't know how my card can be incorrectly configured if it's only one or two cells that's making my game crash. It doesn't do it in other games, it doesn't do it anywhere else in Morroblivion.

Agreed, your PC should not be a prob, and your graphics card specs look ok,so it must be load order of some other mod,or even a mod for morroblivion might be loading in the wrong order.

Steph`s idea should show which mod.

Read my post again. Properly. I've tried even without mods and it still does it. I've moved everything so it's just the original files of Oblivion.esm and the Morroblivion files, disabling all the DLCs aswell. It does nothing to change this, I've already said about 3 or 4 times.

We have read your posts properly, and you say that it is all ok on a laptop.?

If that is the case then it should also be ok on your PC.

And the fact that others [infact most others],have installed the mod with no problems, still points to the fact that your PC install has a problem somewhere.?

Just trying to help.

Anakha, I don't like your attitude bro. We're trying to help you.

So you've already tried this?

  1. Backing up your Oblivion directory to somewhere.
  2. Reinstalling Oblivion, and Shivering Isles from scratch to C:\. Testing the game to make sure it runs ok. (I know you can't do an in-depth test of Oblivion, but just make sure you can get out of the sewers, maybe travel to a few cities, etc, just to get the general idea that Oblivion is not the culprit.)
  3. Installing Morroblivion from scratch as well.
  4. Testing Morroblivion.

Did u check the Warnings.txt file? Any error come up?

Yup, I've done complete reinstalls of everything. To different directories on several occasions. I've checked for a warnings.txt and I can't see one in any directory related to Oblivion or Morrowind. It's a straight CTD, doesn't give any error report so I can't give any more information on it.

Oblivion clean I can get out of the sewers, complete the main quest do pretty much everything. The only error is still on those cells outside Seyda Neen. I've installed Morroblivion using Manual, Wyre Bash and the other way suggested on the How To page, and it still happens.

I've said several times already that I've done clean installs of everything, in different directories. I've also done the same on my laptop to see if it's a fluke that it worked and it crashed once then didn't happen again. Same save files, different save files, no mods, with mods, no DLCs, with DLCs, in Program Files, not in Program Files, verified Steam cache, checked out walkthroughs on the Creation Kit and couldn't find anything wrong with those cells, I've tried changing graphics settings, I've tried PCB, I've tried without looking at the screen whilst I'm walking there untill I hear the Windows beeping at having a key held down on Desktop... I've tried everything I can think of and everything suggested. I'm frustrated with this and it's even more frustrating when I'm asked to try something I've already said I've tried.  I apologise if my frustration shows.

Dude, quit banging your head against the wall. If the game crashes when you go X, then do go there. During my first playthrough of this Master File project, when I was testing and trying to pin down what was wrong, I had trapped crashes in six different saved games in six different places. I trapped the save, went around, and moved on. Then, I had an issue with leaving the Hlaalu Council house in Balmora. Balmora had always been touchy for me, but workable, until this save where I absolutely could not enter the plaza. Use the recall spell to go somewhere else and then came back again and... no problem. The issue is random. It fixes at some points in some games, but basically Morroblivion taxes Oblivion to the breaking point. When I learned about PCB, I went back and tried it on my six saves; it worked for half of them. Then, I used the Purge Cell Buffers Mod, which you have not indicated whether you are using or not. Posting a jpg of your Load Order is not so great; I can't really read it even when I save and magnify, but from what I am able to decipher, you are not using the Purge Cell Buffers Mod. I disabled "View Distant Lands," which you have not indicated whether you have done or not. And, I started walking instead of running. For me, the combination of these three things, plus the occasional PCB by hand, stabilized Morroblivion for me so that I don't get crashes in the same spot that I can't get past. By doing these three things, I was able to completely circumnavigate Vvardenfell and Sheogorad on foot, and in the process explored Every "Location" on the map.

I experienced several CTDs when I was playing morroblivon way back... ESPECIALLY Urshilaka camp.. Only one thing fixed it for me and it is strange..

have any icarnian flight scrolls (whatever/how its spelt) and use it, but move towards that CTD point. It works EVERY time for me when I encountered a fixed CTD point.. of course theres only few.. so if i come across one i normally go around it anyway

I never experienced a CTD again at urshilaka camp because I had a Mark there so i simply Recalled if needed..
